So what do we know about the 47 King Dariens who came before him?
Only about the First, who was important in the Ice Age cycle, and his grandson and great-grandson (hence the Second and Third) - just that they existed.
If his token generation ability cost 4 instead of 5 he would have been so much better. Being able to pump mana into that on-curve had a nice thing going, but as it is at 5 mana it's okay for limited at best.
Honestly i think he's just bad because he's trying to do too many things.
You want to keep him on the battlefield as long as possible for the anthem. But he also has a powerful sac ability.
His ability cost ton of mana and makes two different thing at once. You try to go both tall and wide but you got a terrible power/cost ratio for that.
If you spend a lot of mana and make him very big then it's a waste to sac him for the ability.
And the sac ability itself isn't worth it if you don't invest higly in going wide...

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.

Good ol' unchanging fantasy world. 2000 years, 2 apocalypses, king's still named Darien.
Even if we assume an unbroken line of Dariens since the Ice Age, that's just an average reign of 33-34 years. It's completely possible, just as much as it's possible Darien is just a title of the ruling monarch at this point.

Oh god, I hope it's not an unbroken line of Dariens, that'd be way worse. It's not the most egregious, we did have Kaiser Wilhelm 2000 years after Caesar died, but still a little trite.
I just want a side story about Shanna and Raff looking at their family history and realizing they're both equally related to Sisay and Gerrard.

But "just an average reign of 33-34 years" seems like a bit high for an average, doesn't it?

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.

I cannot take credit for realizing this, but the "XLVIII" is probably not arbitrary or a good indicator of how many generations have passed since the Ice Age.
Because it is an inside joke: The Seattle Seahawks (WotC's home American football team) won Super Bowl XLVIII. And Cassius Marsh - who previewed this card - was originally drafted by the Seahawks in 2014, the same year they won Super Bowl XLVIII.

Good card though, doesn't even really need to be in a dedicated token deck.

You only sac him if your opponent wraths...

the card itself is a CRAZY limited card. Don't think it's anywhere near playable in constructed.
Remember, this is the only Magic card in which X can't be chosen but always has the value of ten. *sage noddle*
It's conceivable that Darien XLVII abdicated.
