I will confess that mtg has conditioned me to expect 5/5 demons to have flying rather than menace, so my initial estimations of this card were a bit too generous. Still not bad, though.

All flying demons have wings in their artworks. The Kamigawa demons don‘t have wings.
Its a 2 mana 3/1 menace , which is in itself reasonable (crazy how far powercreep got us).
Then you still get the option to equip it, which you would only really do to push through, if they have 2 blockers and your stuff is smaller (or it makes sense as you have double strike, or a 0/0 with +1/+1 counters).
Certainly does its job, but its not completely insane and meaningless in anything outside of standard.

I wouldn't say this is entirely meaningless.
Couldn't this help make a Liliana's Contract deck viable in Pioneer?
This is the third 2-drop demon we've gotten recently (dream devourer, scourge of the skyclaves)
It's starting to make sense now why the contract was reprinted in a secret lair if they wanted to encourage this archetype

I already run a copy in my Changeling EDH deck and this card became viable as soon as Maskwood Nexus was printed (arguably, since it was printed due to Arcane Adaptation). If you're talking competitively, we'll I can't speak to that except to say that it does seem a little slow for the formats that it is legal in. And just because a card sees print in a Secret Lair doesn't make it a card that WotC is trying to push play of. It was just a theme that made sense because we were about to hit Innistrad again.

The oni of Kamigawa grant you their power in battle. They simply ask for your mind, body, and soul in return.

it starts as a 3/1 then down the line a little guy like a 1/1 becomes a 5/5

Basically can't drop this until you have 6 mana.

I used to be a demigod, but now I'm an omnimage
