Seeing how they've been breaking self-imposed rules left and right in the last few years, they might as well introduce guns to Magic now. You're telling me the technology is advanced enough for Akira-style motorcycles, but a simple mechanism that shoots pieces of metal at people is too much? At some point it does become ridiculous to see everyone using sticks and swords.
They had "guns" on Ixalan for the pirates. From the art book for Ixalan After playing around with magical tech Kaladesh they noted they are more willing to do more modern technology as long as it feels "magical" with most of the the guns on Ixalan shooting magic blasts, but they also added harpoon and grappling hook guns since they felt in theme, let the pirates swing around and do swashbuckler actions and give some of the more violent pirate more menacing look.
Also why I'm waiting, all we know the bike is a Tengu who shape shift (willing or not) into the bike for rider due to the tengu mask being the front and steering handles of the bike.
Maybe I'm off base here, but I always was under the impression that people loved Kamigawa's flavor, but it suffered because the actual set itself was a letdown, being mostly weak and sandwiched between two massively powerful/popular blocks in Mirrodin and Ravnica. Like, the lore was and setting was fantastic, but the actual cards and mechanics were not well-liked at all.
What was popular was the story of the block but most people didn't care for the world building or flavor of the set. From what Maro has said, people had a hard time pronouncing the names of the card, they made the spirits very weird for western fan while Japanese fans have noted a lot of the yokai/kami felt in name only (such as the baku cycle, a baku is a dream spirit that eats nightmares looks like a tapir none of which I get from the cards) and used a lot of references that a lot of the general player base didn't know or pick up on (like do you get that the Moonfolk are based on the legends of the moon rabbit?). Maro said it ranked very very low in their market research in flavor and mechanics at the time, though he has noted that it seems the player base has seemed to be warmed up to the plane a lot more. I personally think Kamigawa was just a mix of them experimenting on a top down set for the first time and and it being a bit ahead of its time in terms of how much people would like the Japanese culture flavor with anime/managa making it more popular and know in the west and commander making legendary less of a draw back then what it was during Kamigawa.
Thats also why I think we are seeing reflavored Kamigawa now, most people (including me) where staying they would rather see Wotc try and re-flavored Kamigawa rather than "retiring" the plane to cameos.

I like Akira/GitS/Blade Runner and I like Kamigawa, but I'm very skeptical if I'm going to like WotCs amalgamation of the two. Still very little to go off of though...
Neo-Kamigawa is a complex attempt. This is really all that can be inferred at the moment. I’d reserve judgment until the set drops in its entirety.
The world building and story of the original were popular. The focus and power level were off the mark, with the latter suffering from being wedged between game-shattering power creep sets. A kami focus was questionable. We witnessed a similar effect with BFZ and Eldrazi. They’re far too alien and not resonant, especially in high volume. Clearly Innistrad demonstrated that resonant spirits are possible. I adore Kamigawa but when I reflect on what I admire from the original, it’s cards like Minamo, Azami, Kaho, Hisoka, Azusa, Kiku and Toshiro and the dragon spirits, the Moonfolk such as Uyo aesthetically but not their mechanic, the Ninjas and Samurai, etc. essentially the Kamigawa setting itself, and the feudal Japan environment and populace. Removing the unpopular elements left a large void to be filled with a new take, which is justified after thousands of years of post-Kami War development. An urban vs. traditional theme is entirely appropriate for the relatively modernized take on Japan World that Neo-Kamigawa represents.
Man... after seeing the motorcycle there, I am less and less interested in this set by the minute. I loved the original Kamigawa setting and lore, seeing it turned into this just feels wrong. It honestly feels like someone at Hasbro saw the hype for CyberPunk 2077 and passed an order down to cash in on it, nothing outside of the Anthropomorphic rat feels remotely like Magic or Kamigawa.
I really wish they would have taken another crack at Kamigawa now that they got down the legendary matters and what they did wrong. That's my main issue with this steampunk neon semi-modern thing they got going here, that we went from something that felt more like Magic to.....this. They think people didn't like Kamigawa as a plane strictly because of the look and feel when in reality it was half a dozen reasons between low power cards, lack luster mechanics, and somewhat the aesthetic.
Much like they did with Mirrodin from OG to Scars is updating certain things, like the goblins, and they could have done that with OG Kamigawa with another attempt, but that's just my opinion.
that is some of the fugliest art I have seen. I just don't get Wizards
'Oh, you liked Kamigawa block, set in feudal Japan, with all of the ancient feeling and traditional stuff? Did you like the old school samurai and a world where science had no power because of nature spirits? Well you are going to LOVE this new Kamigawa, looking more stylized and over the top advanced than when Tokyo laid it on really thick for the Olympics!'
Thats the point, Kamigawa flavor wasn't well liked by most players. For years on Maro's tumblr there was a debate about if they should re-flavor Kamigawa or have a brand new Japanese inspired world and now we are seeing the results.
EDIT: Anyways I'm gonna wait and see how it looks when we see the full set, speaking of which happy anniversary to last year when people where having melt downs thinking snow wasn't in Kaldheim due to see barley any of set.

You hit it right on the mark. It was the flavor that made Kamigawa popular despite being mechanically weak. It was not just the Feudal Japan setting but also the conflict of the material and spiritual that made the set stand out.
The serious issue is that WOTC has spent nearly two decades saying it was a complete failure. Now that they are trying it again and have possibly removed the one thing that was successful, if it falls short again WOTC will just say the setting was no good and shelve it permanently. That's the main source of tension.
I honestly hope this succeeds, but considering the quality of mechanics and flavor needed to overcome the nostalgia for the past, I am a bit caught on baited breath.

This is kinda where I am, honestly. After reading the above posts, I can see where people would have had issues with the original block's flavor and setting, and in fairness the Books were legitimately the best thing about the entire block. So I can see the desire to take a mulligan on it and reflavor it rather than scrap the setting entirely.
That said, I think I'd still rather see more of a high-fantasy magic take on the original Kamigawa setting, just applying things they've learned since, than leaning fully into all-out cyberpunk. It just feels really jarring to me, and kinda sad that even though we're going back to Kamigawa, that great story and setting from the books that were so good will probably never be revisited.

I actually was a huge fan of Kamigawa when it came out, read all the books and liked the setting (though in retrospect the worldbuilding was a bit too simplistic, the world felt way too small and divided too neatly along color lines). And I have to say, I can't understand the negative response to Neon Dynasty (mostly based on one artwork) so far. Perhaps it's just because I positively despise the "fantasy stasis" trope, in which thousands and thousands of years go by and the worlds as well as their technology (or magi-tech) don't change at all without explanation (Ravnica at least had the guildpact as an excuse for a 10k years stasis and larger changes started to appear once it went away).
That's what I loved about Dominaria and Kaladesh, the former changing over the years and explaining why certain technologies (like building moon-sized satellites) simply aren't available anymore, the latter because it shows how a fantasy world discovers a new resource and industrializes around it. Hell, even Innistrad underwent some technological progress before the main story even began and has (though mostly crazy) scientists to thank for it. The last time we were on Kamigawa was 1300 years ago, I would be massively disappointed if it was basically the same for no reason, especially after the Kami war upheaval and the metaphysical changes to the overall world. And I still think that one of the main conflicts in Neon Dynasty will probably be about tradition vs technological progress, and that the established parts of Kamigawa won't be forgotten about. Hell, they have to explain how all the contemporary Kamigawa cards didn't show that much technological change so far, I assume that it hasn't spread across the whole world and/or resembles modern day Japan now (i.e. very advanced cities, yet more oldfashioned country sites).
Magic was always a bit more non-traditional about technology than other fantasy, hell, the Thrawn established a mostly non-magical society which even went into space in Dominaria's history. And we do have high fantasy worlds like Eldraine, Theros or (at least previously) Bant just like we have more out there worlds like Ravnica, Kaladesh or now Kamigawa. I'm very much looking forward to the details of the changes to one of my favorite worlds. I personally don't want the same thing as last time, only with better power level and less strange spirits (which I personally even liked in the original block, at least as a concept).

That's great, however Kamigawa in its feudal form wasn't well-received by players initially. So it makes sense they would "modernize" it a bit more to attract back those who felt disenfranchised or disinterested from it.
Be thankful we're going back.

that’s why it’s in the speculation section
there’s 3 other problems kyodai's mugshot is literally a twin to Michiko but in serpent dragon form. This doesn't look like that. Plus it’s more likely they make sisters of flesh and spirit legendary card
second you can't get a good look at the holo stamps on any of these (you can’t see if it has the walker symbol and right angles changes to mana symbols) when Vorinclex, monsterous raider was leaked we can see it clean as a whistle
Third do you honestly believe they would go back to 5C legends like
which is code for stinky the 3 most recent tiamat, Garth one-eye and Codie, Vociferous Codex none of them are busted like the ones before and better than all of them and kyodai (heck Garth can make black lotus and still not busted)
So let me get this straight - y'all were okay with fleetwheel cruiser and untethered express because they were powered by Aether, but this motorcycle that is probably powered by magic is too much?
Also people hated the flavor of Kamigawa. Some people loved it, but since most people didn't understand it Wizards said they would never return. Because of overly vocal fans of Kamigawa they now decided to return with some major tweaks. So you overly vocal fans better not complain about the aesthetics because IMO we would have been better off never returning to Kamigawa. This is your doing!

Yes totally okay with the Kaladesh vehicles as they show some artistic sophistication in their execution. I'm okay with a motorcycle as well in Kamigawa if it just weren't portrayed like a acne-ravaged 7th grader's notebook scrawlings.

How is that difficult to accept that the people who DID enjoy the original Kamigawa block might be slightly off-put or dismayed by hoping for a return for over a decade, only to find that it was being drastically changed? It's like saying, "Hey, did you like that Kurosawa Samurai movie? Cool, here's Akira. Same country just advanced in time, right?"
And the Big Daddy Ed Roth "Rat Fink" style artwork isn't lost on me either. (Some of you youngins should check it out, you'd probably like it.) I love vintage Hot Rod art but its place is questionable at best on a Magic card.

It's not on a card though? This is the collector box packaging we're discussing. Crimson Vow and Midnight both had very abstract art as well.

You can ALWAYS be disappointed that a set didn't turn out how you'd like or a card you wanted didn't get printed. That position isn't difficult to understand at all. Every time a set drops with more crappy Birds when there's like 6 more rare Humans I'm disappointed. But getting super pissed at WotC and acting like they're ruining the game because you don't personally like a set's flavor or whatever--that's a little harder to get behind.

Im not super pissed, or even mildly annoyed, at WotC. Nor have I said anything about it ruining the game. If anything, im just a little bummed that the original setting that I and others DID enjoy and hoped to see again someday is more or less officially dead. That's not to say that this new set will be bad or that I wont find it enjoyable as well.
That said, what I DO find annoying is blanket statements stating that people should shut up and like this, because "This is your doing". No one is obligated to like anything, and acting like the people who have asked for a return for years are some whiny minority that is just getting a pity set and should just be happy with whatever we get is just patronizing.
Why am I not surprise some of you instantly turned off from the motorcycle despite the samurai poster and the wanderer
What is unusual about enjoying one or two things spoiled and very much NOT enjoying something else spoiled? The motorcycle has me kind of concerned for the direction the plane is going, too. "Samurais on bikes" just isn't my thing. I still have hope for the set, just not so excited by a cyberpunk/mechworld/thunderdome vibe being grafted onto Kamigawa. Hopefully the execution is still great.

we’re still in the year of DFC's we’re going outside theros of enchantment creatures
channel is back
and kyodai May be just a bad as [[cromat]] as the commander wise.
The set symbol hasn't been revealed yet, right? Makes the 3 a little suspect for covering it and confirms the last if that turns out to be the correct symbol.
The third image looks like it's a mountain range with a sun (moon?) rising over it. It's the white legendary card tilted sideways.

that’s why it’s in the speculation section
there’s 3 other problems kyodai's mugshot is literally a twin to Michiko but in serpent dragon form.
This is your doing!

finally it’s not just me.
Yes totally okay with the Kaladesh vehicles as they show some artistic sophistication in their execution. I'm okay with a motorcycle as well in Kamigawa if it just weren't portrayed like a acne-ravaged 7th grader's notebook scrawlings.
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.
Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

Takenuma is gorgeous and thematic. I adore the artwork on the three legitimate appearing cards. Hope we see Minamo for Blue
|| UW Jace, Vyn's Prodigy UW || UG Kenessos, Priest of Thassa (feat. Arixmethes) UG ||
Cards I still want to see created:
|| Olantin, Lost City || Pavios and Thanasis || Choryu ||
And also true.
