So heres the "sneak peek" [the only things we care about] of a set 4 months away.
Get the hype going. Gotta get your preorders in.
???????
In a way this is sort of sickening
How so? We know what sets will be released a year out, and we knew months ago there would be full arts and shocklands. Hell, we knew years ago all silver boardered sets had full art basics.
I love silver-border cards. I understand why they decided to do this, and the cards they've presented look fun, but I do not like this black-border change. I honestly think it's going to be more confusing long term than silver-border ever was.
EDIT: The fact that they also messed up on some of the first previews in conveying which was legal and which wasn't is a bad sign.
If they do Slivers in this Un-set, I'm hesitant to see them to see if they'll work just as well as with/against the other Sliver hive decks I've built.
I get why they wanted to designate half the cards or so to be Commander legal by default. Aside from just selling more packs of cards, it lets players enjoy them in lots of new ways, so that seems like a solid choice. My only question is, why the stamps? Wouldn't it be more straight-forward to just have some cards have silver borders and some have black borders? I mean, remember Steamflogger Boss? That was a black bordered card that you could open in an Un-set... so what's the difference here?
My only guess is that they are going to "stamp-shift" a bunch of old Un-cards. Maro said that the Collectors' Boosters are full of things that Un-set collectors would want. What could make him say that? A shot at getting new printings of old Un-cards. And if they're reprinting old un-cards, they'll give them stamps, so why not give some of them acorns and some ovals? Just speculating, but so far, the data fit this theory.

The difference is the sheet they are printed on. There is a reason Steamflogger Boss was printed on the Land sheet (the only other black bordered cards in Unstable). They just don't want to do multiple sheets with different rarity allocations to get the packs to work right. At least with Lands, they are always on their own sheet anyway so throwing an extra card on there isn't a big deal. Trying to do that to half the set and still keep the right rarity ratios either ends up with a set twice as big as they want it or just messes with the ratios entirely.
That's not to say they won't do what you suggest. But this isn't really evidence in support of that as the explanation is a bit simpler.
It's honestly surprising they took this long to make the change. Un-sets, while cool, sell pretty poorly since most people don't really do anything with the cards in a meaningful way after doing the event or whatever. Personally, I've never bought a single pack from an Un-set, probably the only MtG product I can say that about. Depending on previews, this might change the game for me.
I don't think they can go back and errata the old silver-bordered cards to be legal now due to confusion, but we'll see. I'm definitely into the lands for sure, but not exceedingly so. My stupid land goal now is to get enough of the pixel SL lands to fully pixelate at least one or two of my EDH decks. Those lands hit me in the nostalgia too hard.

Well, for basically any booster thats true as well.
You play "maybe" the rare of a booster and the rest is just jank to throw away.
Making the cards black border does the same, its still 99.9% crap nobody cares about, and the "reprints" are lands, so the entire value is in the lands anyway, which was always the case for the Un-Sets, at least when the lands where special, which they are not anymore at this point.
----
As we have "borderless" cards now, all of the cards could just be that, borderless, no black or silver needed.
But that cuts in their business of Collector packs.
Making the "holo-stamp" relevant to identify if a card is legal or not will be awful enough.
For EDH/Commander theres basically no reason to not allow silver-border cards anyway, its just the rule they fly with, and in casual you can do whatever you want anyway, bound to no rules.
Introducing dice rolls to black-border land predictable resulted in these changes to force more Un-Mechanics into the regular game (and its absolutely awful to play competitive with these random mechanics on top of all the randomness the game already brings to the table).
If everyone is on board to have fun with Silver-Border cards it can be enjoyable.
If people dont feel the need to ask their playgroup in the first place, that opens the door wide to disappointment and trouble in paradise.

I might have somewhat of a idea of what might become legal in eternal
likely:
dice rolling and coin flips is the most obvious
Augment and host (mutate is black border and that mechanic is eons more complicated than this.)
Contraptions assemble and reassemble
cards worded like regular magic cards (examples killerbots infinity elemental, crow storm
Cards that have black border versions (example: the cheese stands alone to barren glory)
Most of the legendaries
The alt win condition cards B-I-N-G-O Blast from the Past B.O.B. (Bevy of Beebles) Surgeon General Commander (even if augment misses they let it through because of the aura/mutate part)
Chicken and clam folk creatures
depends:
Artist/art related (these are easy to understand but mark might not allow it.)
Last strike and triple strike (if they allow it)
Squirrellink and Knightlifelink Baron von count (it’s hard to activate but might have a similar problem like leovold/black braids.)
Cards involving words or numbers (Now I Know My ABC's dodges this bullet) By Gnome Means (first ability is black it just depends if the counter part is possibly)
The cards with same art with different abilities Flock of rabid sheep (the type of token is the only problem it’s just coin flips for X tokens)
Cards involving age Grusilda, Monster Masher we're okay with this one mark may not
not happening:
Everything else but we will give most obvious
Gotcha cards
Wacky stunts
Player cards (acception is Timmy, Power Gamer that card is literally a creature Quicksilver Amulet no tap required)
Any thing involving booster packs
Body part/clothe related The Countdown Is at One
The 1/2 power creatures/donkeys
Players outside the game
Throwing cards in the air Flavor Judge Rules Lawyer Gleemax (impossible to loose with that out)
Not sure but the mini game cards are probably out (example Head to Head) Keeper of the sacred word (there’s no way in hell they will let this easy infinite +3/+3 creature)
Involving sets (symbols) or watermarks (reprints it changes it)
Reminder/flavor text (same as sets/watermarks)

Strong disagree. As a guy that regularly play with it and silver border in general in EDH, I can assure you the effect is overrated and is perfectly possible to still win with in. It mess up removal targets sure, but most of the key things are unaltered (Aggro decks can still cast creatures and attack and block as they choose, Counterspell in control decks works just fine most of the times, many combo decks doesn't even care about to target things like Thoracle based decks, and so on). Not only that, but even with removals you can play it around : many removals say "destroy target permanent an opponent controls" or don't target at all (like mass removals or stuff like Council's Judgment). Finally, let's not forget it literally cost 1 million mana. Which means it's impossible to hard cast the card alone and you need a build either based on reanimator or show and tell strategies, both of which can be easily disrupted in many ways before gleemax got even a chance to hit the board. (discard, grave exile, etc)
Infinity Elemental won't be legal because a creature's power has to be an actual number. As for Saw in Half, gonna be fun seeing that with Dockside Extortionist in cEDH.
And just like that my enthusiasm for another silver-bordered set came to a screeching halt, crashed into a wall, and exploded in a giant fireball.
I own a silver-border cube. I love un-sets. I was planning to buy this set, just like I've bought the others. Now I have zero interest, both for acorn cards and the eternal cards. Way to go, WOTC - you've alienated part of your core audience by making a niche product that isn't for the people who wanted the product... again. I will not be mixing this into my silver-border cube, and I think black-bordering silver-bordered cards is stupid. The fact that they even messed up the spoiler by showing the wrong holo-stamp proves what a confusing mess they've created.
I'm so glad the rules committee has said the acorn cards are not commander legal, especially if they are border-shifting reprints.

Well, they may just do that for a month again like they did with Unstable, just to try to sell the set better.
I'm warily optimistic about this one. There are a few older cards in un-sets that could totally get oracle updates and black-border upgrades. There are some that definitely shouldn't and I hope they understand the delicate balance there.

So all the weirdest and fun cards are unlikely hehe. I'm worried by making them black border that most of the cards are going to be way too "safe". I'd like to see them go full on crazy with these un-sets. I'm worried it'll get too watered down and the "comedic" element is just too tame.
those lands alone will sell this product like crazy. the rest will most likely be trash that 99% of the people wont want
Thats the sad part.
These reprint can be in any set, just like they put the full-art lands from Un-Sets in basically any set.
They take whats special and put it in sets where it shouldnt belong. Doing so dilutes the sets identity, so this is not really a Un-Set at all, its just a bunch of cards with Shockland Reprints.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
