To be fair there's not many that have been printed recently. The last non Commander, non super specific (i.e. tribal) 2cmc mana rock was....Corrupted Grafstone, Guild Globe(?), Mimic(?) Liquimetal Torque, Spell Satchel? Take your pick, most of them are not great.
Sure, the enemy Talismans came out some time ago, but I wouldn't call them new exactly. My point is I can understand finding 3 cmc mana rocks to be boring nowadays. I don't believe the one you quoted was asking for powerful, just something else else for once.
how do you like that a mana rock with three omen counters that turns into a giant that makes mana.
Note that the front half is a 1/2 creature.
