Odd flavour, is there sone pop culture reference I'm missing?
To a children's song about a man who tries to get rid of his cat. It gets progressively more violent, but inevitably, as the chorus says, "The cat came back the very next day. We though he was a goner, but the cat came back, he just couldn't stay away"
That is a very cost-effective reanimation spell, especially since it gets mana value <= 3. The "if die then exile" clause also means that blinking it brings it back without the exile clause. Now, if only the Drannith Magistrate were not such a party pooper.......
Reanimates Skyclave Apparition and Elite Spellbinder for two mana. I'm on board. Flashback, too. I can bring back Apparition all day. As long as you run four Apparition, this card will be amazing. Throw in Teleportation Circle to dodge the exile clause? That's just cheeky.
This almost feels worse than Call of the Death-Dweller because it requires two colors to cast, has an exiling drawback, is restricted to reanimating one body, and doesn't add on counters. How can the former be an uncommon while this is a rare? Is a 5 mana flashback cost really worth making this rare? I love cats and will get a playset of this, but still don't understand the relationship between card power level and rarity sometimes. If it could reanimate a creature from any graveyard I'd be much happier, but it doesn't even feel as good as unburial rites (is it?). At least it looks better than the recently printed graceful restoration.

Flashback is an extremely strong mechanic to staple onto any spell. Imagine if Call of the Death-Dweller had "draw a card" printed on it. That would make it significantly stronger, right? So even if the "card" you draw is an overcosted version of the same spell, the card advantage inherent in doing so should be obvious.

I appreciate the reminder, but I'm well aware of the power level of flashback.
I'm the guy who bought a few dozen snapcaster mages when they were still in Standard at $17 CAD apiece because I knew he was underappreciated at the time. Then I traded several for at least quadruple when the time was right and got plenty of other good cards I wanted (most of which have also gone up significantly since). Strangely, it took me almost a decade to complete my foil playset.
Here's the thing...We can't just say "flashback is extremely strong", because not every card which has or grants flashback sees competitive play.
It's just not inherently true of that characteristic, because some flashback costs are too high, and there's plenty of grave-hate in every format, at the very least in sideboards.
Also, take for example a card like mission briefing. This was a card I wanted to find a home for when it was first spoiled but it never got one. Why is that? The CMC of UU vs 1U? The lack of the official keyword? I doesn't even target the card. Is the explanation as simple as "it can't be flickered for repeat usage, and potentially adding two cards to the grave is insignificant"? That's what I find slightly confusing. It essentially grants flashback the same as snapcaster while adding fuel to the grave for more options, and (most) players still had have no interest because it's slightly harder to cast. Where does a card like that belong in lieu of or in addition to a snapcaster? One could even argue that rebound is better than flashback because you don't have to pay a mana cost, the spell just recasts itself for free. Similarly, retrace lets you recast a card repeatedly without having to exile it. The abilities are strong, but not every card with those abilities is inherently extremely strong. But I digress.
Y'know why Can't Stay Away irritates me slightly?
I love cats.
However, now we can't even play this with cauldron familiar in Standard when that would be the ultimate flavor!
To tease us by printing this card now is a cruel and unusual joke meant to patronize us.
Am I the only one who sees this?
Disturb a creature for 2 mana, with flashback of 5. Meet the set's white(/black) reanimator spell with a dead animal coming back from the dead for food.
