I like the Gangs of New York/Sin City feel of Streets of New Capenna (Al Capone reference? Street Wraith reprint?, but if it's a shard theme then I think I'd have liked to see us go back to Alara in that case.
I am excited for the fall and winter sets then, set on dominaria, but they kinda ruined kamigawa for me and capenna looks similarly futuristic. I don't want futuristic on my magic cards, I already hated kaladesh.
Capenna looks futuristic? Honestly, I was getting Ancient Rome vibes from that New Capenna art.
The logo and background in the Ob Nixilis art are very much Art Deco in style, which sets it at roughly 1920's our time. Pretty modern as far as MtG sets go, but not really futuristic or ancient.

Hm, looks to me more like a less technological fantasy version of the 1920s to be honest, with the markings and the frames of the buildings similar to Art Deco, a style I really like. I don't really see the "futuristic" aspects though, I think Kaladesh is way more technologically advanced. It is potentially on the same level as Ravnica, just with a different focus. Neon Dynasty looks very advanced though, but we have to wait and see what exactly happened to Kamigawa in the last... 2000 years they said? The timeline on the wiki says it's more like 1300 years, but whatever. I'm excited for it. And I think it is actually the case that there are still rural areas on Kamigawa with way lower technological sophistication. Overall I like where they are going with the core sets and I'm also excited for a new Un-Set and to be honest, the LotR set.
I'm still cautiously optimistic. I'm down for a new take on Kamigawa that polishes the stuff that didn't worked out and New Capenna seems cool even if kind of a misfit. Also, Don Nixilis? Just perfect. Dominaria United and The Brothers War seem like homeruns.
Also, some speculation based on this: MaRo kept saying that they were trying to give Standard legal sets some thematic cohesion to make up for the loss of blocks. 2021 was based around MDFCs, but that didn't quite work out as expected so they said they'll double down on it. Well, Neon Dynasty is cyberpunk, New Capenna will definitely have a Treasure subtheme (I mean, the only argument against it I can think of would be "it's just too obvious") while Dominaria/Brothers War will probably both stick to the historic subtheme. I think it's pretty obvious that the "thematic cohesion" for 2022 is going to be "Artifacts matters", which also makes me think it's very unlikely we'll be returning to New Phyrexia in 2023.

This would be a good hypothesis as I think the new Kamigawa set will also be big on artifacts as well given the cyberpunk theme to it.
Though I am disappointed that it appears that they are going to use their typical art style for Neon Dynasty. This would have been a perfect time to use some of the art they have for the Japanese versions.

Calling it now, but New Capenna is a city on Alara. Please note that they said that the city has special significance to Elspeth. With Alara merging the demons of Grixis will have infiltrated the other shards that were once separate. Demon led gangs and a city that was built by Angels (the city on Bant no doubt). With there being 3 colour factions I'm guessing this is what Alara has become and after Elspeth escaped Theros she decided to head back to her adopted home only to find how much it had changed.
With a Lord of the Rings I am really Really REALLY hoping Gandalf is a planeswalker. I see him being blue/white.
Guessing the Street Fighter themed Secret Lair will be released around Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty (KND?). I would really like to build a Blanka Commander deck! Blanka has got to be red/green... wonder what other colors the rest will be...
Wondering if Unfinity will 1-up previous Un-set lands... Borderless???
Commander Black looks sick as hell.
Brother's War has really piqued my interest. Wondering if it'll be a.... Damn, not too sure what to think? Updated characters from the Brothers War? Or another story that occurred? Will previously killed off characters have new versions? So much, so much...
If Slivers and Shocklands return in this standard, my poor wallet.
Shocklands == Ravnica only (mostly likely)(as they will need something to hype the return to return to return to return to ravnica)
The exception to this being the science fiction shocklands that Unfinity will have. Maybe they'll be reprints and black border, maybe they'll be new and silver.

Ah, I didn't get to see that art before - and it's giving me massive Bioshock vibes, so calling it Art Deco sounds believable. Bioshock seems retro-futuristic and part-steampunk to me, though, so I can see New Capenna going in the same direction.

MaRo said Shocklands could return to standard without a trip out to Ravnica. There's nothing in their names specifying a plane. In fact, the Secret Lair: Shocklands were represented by a variety of planes.
most of it doesn't even appeal to me because its universes beyond. this all right after we were supposed to be hyped for upcoming innistrad previews, which were hot on the heels of idk whatever the last set was that just came out, forgotten realms? they're getting difficult to track now too.
its just too much. they answered complaints about product flood with a deluge.
i should be hyped for a brothers war set. i loved the book, i've read the things every single year since it was first published. i loved all of that stuff. i've wanted a proper set for it for decades now... and yet... i don't give a ****. it'll just be more of the same turn offs. all the value at mythic, too many variant borders and arts, no time to actually digest and play with the set before we're on to the next thing.
cool?
i'm sure the pioneer decks will be turds that are a mediocre entry point to the format... and has that format even gained traction anywhere? does anyone even care? i'm sure there'll be 1 hot card just to make the kit sell.
then theres universes beyond, thats just too much. way too much. i hate this idea. i'm not alone. now we get it jammed down our throats like... well use whatever metaphor you prefer but regardless, its not cool.
i didn't like the forgotten realms setting, a lot of people didn't, so here's some baldur's gate about it but now its mixed with your commander cards so you commander players are forced into it. oh you bought so much! you love the setting! universes beyond is a hit! -its manipulative bull***** right here.
it wouldn't be so bad except that these are also game pieces. these are also game pieces that are generally pushed. these are also game pieces that are generally pushed to sell product, so if you want to stay relevant and not get absolutely steam rolled by whoever at whatever event, you're sure as ***** buying into it. that's just not fair any more.
frankly, as hyped as i should be for some of these products, i give zero ****s and this has gone a long way toward turning me off completely. right now i'd rather spend my money on literally any other game that doesn't bombard me with new crap every single month. that doesn't exploit fomo. that doesn't push new cards and force me into them to stay relevant.
this kind of pace and pigheadedness will be the thing that destroys magic on a long enough timeline. i'm not a sky is falling type person, haven't been in 27 years of playing... but thats how i feel after this past year and seeing what the next one will be like.

This is the most unhyped I've ever been about a new set announcement. I am more confused than anything and the few things I'm genuinely looking forward to are buried between stuff like Fortnite.
Like, I don't even anymore.
Also, is it just me or is Streets of New Capenna the most soulless reveal of a new set ever? Like, not saying the set itself isn't interesting, but the announcement is like "there's angels and demons or whatever, idc". And the main demon in the art looks like Thanos in Ob Nixilis cosplay?

Just only play MTG with the family for holidays. Problem solved. That's how I'm treating the game building decks and anything WoTC does never interferes with that fun approach. I swear, people feel like they have to play competitive Magic to play the game....

Oof. That's a mixed bag, and mostly not great. Brothers' War is a great idea. New Capenna seems perfectly reasonable. But man, that Kamigawa art is NOT promising. They're really taking the "neon" bit literally.
Seeing Chun Li and Fortnight present really makes my stomach turn (as a fan of street fighter). Fortnight especially-- the aesthetics are intentionally rediculous.
Number of standard sets per year is the same as it ever was as far as I know. The masters sets are reprints, so nothing new. Forgotten Realms sold extremely well, and as someone who doesn't know anything about D&D it was literally just another MtG set for me. Not a huge fan of the mechanics but most of the set-specific mechanics are geared more toward limited play anyway. No one has to buy any UB, and we have no idea how "pushed" the cards will actually be regardless (if TWD is any indication, not all that much). Commander players will literally just buy singles unless they're genuinely interested in the set, and there are 0 cards you HAVE to own to "stay relevant" in a casual format. For me--I liked Commander Legends and again, Baldur's Gate might as well just be some new plane to me so I could personally care less if it's a crossover.
The Pioneer announcement is a little weird, but I guess they're trying to push it again with in-store play returning. I'm guessing they'll be every bit as good as any other event deck; i.e., not that great but better than a starter.
Truly this mindset makes no sense to me. Buy the stuff you like, don't buy the stuff you don't like, if you want to be hyper-competitive that's your choice and just buy the singles you need.

Well, goodbye paycheck 2022...
Maybe I can save myself some headache and just buy a singleton foil set on release and just enjoy drafting a case... lol
Edit: Not to say there isn't much love for everything though, I'm just a HUGE Un-Nut.
