I wonder how they're going to justify the lore we've already seen from current day Kamigawa. Because we know that there are sections that aren't all cyberpunked from the stories about Tamiyo and her children.
Could Tamiyo be the Emperor?
Tamiyo the observer being Empress seems quite out of character to me.
The Sisters of Flesh and Spirit somehow figuring out how to planeswalk would be spicy, but part of me dreads Nicol Bolas finally tracking the Umezawas back to where they came from, escaping his Prison Realm, and becoming Emperor. (Honestly, Bolas not getting killed off still smells like Wizards left open the opportunity for him to come back, and him coming back might only be a matter of time.)
Someone else mentioned Oko as a possibility; IMO, the only way Oko is on the Emperor's throne is if he usurped it. While the flavour behind Oko definitely sounds like the faerie(/Yosei?) faction he came from espouses Asiatic philosophies of harmony, I suspect Wizards left his home plane open instead of fixing it on Kamigawa.
I would like to offer another possibility:
Kamigawa has clearly went through an increase in technology. Who do we know who loves technology, craves power, has a history of infiltrating other planes, and recently lost the only boss who could keep his plans in check?
That's right, Tezzeret.
hmm I will give you points for that
i think all 4 sets will have phyrexian arch including innistrad
and tezzert is believed to be the culprit that got vorinclex to kaldheim since he entered as if he went threw the planar bridge
For KND they could always approach it like how FF8 did with Squall's sword-gun thing. I mean it's totally possible to have a firearm of some sort especially after that many years of societal development.
'buster
More likely neon laser beam blasters than Final Fantasy style sword-guns from how it looks so far lol.
If they can do a Gangster setting then a Western set is more possible. It will show us how they will creatively work around the guns aspect of a genre that predominantly features guns.
With Neon Dynasty looking the way it does, a western themed set certainly won't be too high tech or "futuristic" for Magic. It looks like they're pushing REALLY hard to expand Magic from only being fantasy style stuff. I'm definitely not a fan of it moving in that direction and like I said earlier in the thread, that's coming from somebody who prefers sci fi stuff.
Sometimes I feel the need to recall that the story of Invasion block involved an airship, an army of genetically modified clones and people in mech suits fighting off an alien invasion.
That's true, but the overall aesthetic of everything was still very not sci fi looking.
Futuristic tech in a premodern setting? Kinda sounds like Steampunk…

I can see them be a big part of the two dominaria sets but I really really really don’t want them to have anything to do with the Innistrad or kamigawa sets. You have to remember that people weren’t very happy with how the eldrazi affected zendikars or Innistrads last return and they’re already trying something new with kamigawa. I think if they do anything it should be bread crumbs that lead to them but I don’t want completed werewolves or ninjas.

Embrace the dark you call a home,
Gaze upon an empty, white throne
A legacy of lies,
A familiar disguise
Sing with me a song of conquest and fate
The black pillar cracks beneath its weight
Night breaks through the day, hard as a stone
Lost in thoughts all alone
Tezzeret is a possibility but a) we already had "Tezzeret infiltrates a plane by climbing on top of the social ladder and instigating its natives to develop new tech for nefarious purposes" in Kaladesh and this would just feel like a rehash; and b) we already have one new Planeswalker confirmed for Kamigawa and he's a cyber-ninja, a combo that definitely feels at least partially UB which would conflict with Tezz's color identity.
Tezzeret can show up in mono-blue and leave Kyto UB, similar how it looks like Alrinn will be RG in this Innistrad set while Wrenn is in mono-green.
We also likely will get a new Tamiyo so Kamigawa just might be blue walker focused.
True but not entirely correct since Arlinn is in Midnight Hunt and Wrenn is in Crimson Vow. A better comparison would be Theros where Calix was WG and Elspeth was W - which still makes it a valid point but there's still the issue of rehashing the Kaladesh plot for a highly anticipated plane return. Maybe it's just me but it just feels wrong.
Also reminder that while the plot can fit in as much 'walkers as it wants, the Mythic slots are another story, which makes the idea of a U, UG/W and a UB 'walker in a single set kinda iffy.
For KND they could always approach it like how FF8 did with Squall's sword-gun thing. I mean it's totally possible to have a firearm of some sort especially after that many years of societal development.

I think it will depend on what was really popular back when this was still in development, so roughly 2018 and 2019, plus what the developers thought was cool. Going by that logic the Star Wars sequels might have had a strong influence on some of this.
Personally I would like to see some really cool cyberpunk/anime-esque feel in the art similar to the Japanese alternative art in the Strixhaven set and some of the planeswalkers. If there were ever was a time to use it a set with Ninjas and Samurai would be it, I just hope that if done it doesn't get kept language locked out of the U.S.A.

Could have Tamiyo in UG like war of the spark or if no Tezzeret mono-blue like Innistrad 1.
But again not sure if they said it was a planesawalker who was emperor or the possibility someone from the original block somehow lived (or they have a kami emperor now). Tezzeret just has been on the plane before thought as someone else has brought up Oko could be in disguise here.

They have not said it's a planeswalker, but the mortals from the last Kamigawa are dead and you can't form a dynasty without a hereditary line of succession, which requires mortality.
Therefore, it's either a planeswalker (from Kamigawa or pretending to be) or Yuriko.
Man I am 100% on board with Kamigawa. That concept art is just gorgeous. My only complaint is it will not appear on a card. What a phenomenal set this is going to be. As a major Kamigawa fan, I am truly thrilled with this

I mentioned Bant is a possibility but unlikely - New Capenna is 3c faction based and with Ikoria just rotating out it being based around shards is far more likely, so Tamiyo stealing their thunder feels kinda weird. I'd say mono-U is even less likely and doesn't makes sense from a story perspective - we already know Tamiyo is an outsider to all the cyberpunk nonsense so her being G to portray her traditionalism seems kinda important here.
My money is on UG, maybe UGW, that's why I said UG/W. Either way, none of the three options seems to discard the idea that Tezz seems like a tight fit.
I'm not going to feel easy at all seeing Aragorn and Legolas cards in Modern.
You're not going to feel easy to see high-fantasy cards(because thats what it is LOTR, High Fantasy), which is really what Magic aesthetic and theme is all about on the core? just pretend is another D&D set then.
But I noticed that the most funny thing is that most of the people complaining about the integrity of game identity never readed Magic novels or have very little knowledge of mtg lore, while most vorthos I see they just don't care about it, because custom-altered cards are already a things from decades and all this UB thing it just doesn't affect the real magic lore in any way.
LotR is no where near high fantasy, it's low fantasy, very few spellcasters and magic items. MtG settings and the Forgotten Realma are vastly more high magic then LotR.
Commander Legends Baldur's Gate is another drafting commander set?
Yes it's fractals Commander. The last Commander Legends set was like 362 cards, 165 of which were new cards. The original Commander Legends had Over 70 new Legendary Creatures and 2 Planeswalkers who could act as Commander. I'm expecting CL: BoBG could have even more Legendary characters from BG 1, BG 2, and BG 3, classic character like Elminster, and practical NPCs of Baldur's Gate, nearby monsters and more Gods. Maybe lands based on the Wards of Baldur's Gate.
Unlike the old CL set, alot more cards will likely be new as there isn't alot of D&D cards in MtG.
I wonder how they're going to justify the lore we've already seen from current day Kamigawa. Because we know that there are sections that aren't all cyberpunked from the stories about Tamiyo and her children.
On his blog Mark highly indicted that there are also more traditional sections of Kamsigawa.
New Cappena will either have really good mana fixing or it will be a dud. What was it, three four colored gangs make up the set?
So Either there will be some awesome mana fixing like they had in the first Ravnica, splice mana, or we see tri or possibly quad color lands of some kind.
While on one hand I'm thrilled to see Kamigawa back... what really frustrates and angers me is the way they botched the writing system.
In the Kamigawa novels and official Wizards fictions, the writing system on Kamigawa used, as far as we can discern, actual kanji. This was even a significant plot point in one of the tales, where the written character for nin (as in "ninja") depicts the brushstrokes for "heart" below the brushstrokes for "blade" -- just as it does in the real world. This also makes collecting the Kamigawa cards in Japanese especially rewarding, as you can see how the names are written in kanji and, if you know Japanese, what those names actually signify. One beautiful wordbuilding touch is that on the Japanese cards and in the novel, the Soratami have all their names written in katakana, signifying their apartness from the rest of the world.
Kamigawa was full of these cool linguistic touches like that. The idea that Kamigawa mortals read and wrote in a script mirroring actual Japanese gave the world a whole extra dimension, a second lens through which it could be understood, experienced, and appreciated.
But these new neon signs don't say anything. This is just another generic made-up fantasy script like Magic has on all its other worlds. To be sure, some of the old Kamigawa cards also featured art with purely-fictional script, but those always appeared to be arcane runes associated with the spirit world. These are city signs, trying to evoke the general shapes of kanji and kana, but failing to be anything but ugly and meaningless.

At least the Neon Dynasty logo did it right.
Could just be the key art.
I'm also looking forward to the Azorius Spirits Pioneer deck. Would be nice to obtain spirits in one deck instead of having to hunt down singles.

Well, to be fair, it has been two thousand years.
And Wizards mentioned that they were working with some cultural experts, maybe they decided to not use real-world scripts? After all, they generally avoid real scripts and symbols elsewhere.

That's true, but the overall aesthetic of everything was still very not sci fi looking.
Futuristic tech in a premodern setting? Kinda sounds like Steampunk…
Yeah, the early stuff was bordering on high tech stuff was done in a similar vein as maybe steampunk (or aetherpunk with Kaladesh which is my favourite), where it's high tech and they have airships, phyrexian mechs, Urza has power plants beaming with energy and stuff like that, but it's still rooted in fantasy and not "futuristic high tech" if that makes sense.
30's Anniversary, and they don't even bother to go beyond bland fonts for logo?
That said, I'm very excited for Neon Dynasty. I'm hoping Ghost in the Shell reference there. New Capenna should have Batman crossover!
Like Innistrad "Werewolf" and "Vampire" last year's Showcase their fonts and Logos aren't finished yet (it says their not finished right on the MtG article for the Showcase), so the Logos & Font for Commander Legends: Battle For Baldur's Gate, Dominaria United, and Brother's War will come later.
So, Unfinity. You mentioned it will have full-art "spacic" lands which sounds awesome. You also mentioned space-themed shocks though! Can you confirm that they're the Ravnica shocks we all know and love? And will they be full art?
They are the Ravnica shock lands, they are full art and they are in space.
For nearly all of you, here's the actual reason you are interested in the Un-set.
In other words, they baited us with overpriced Secret Lair alternate arts when much less expensive copies were already scheduled to be reprinted again less than a year later?! Those....Wizards!

Uh, what
LotR is like the archetypical high fantasy example.
High Fantasy and High Magic are often conflated by people, which leads them to saying LotR is not High Fantasy, when what they mean is that LotR is actually low magic.
