Give this thing lifelink, and it practically has vigilance. How much this will mess with combat math when on the opponent's board will depend on how many instant-speed lifegain effects there are in the set.
@fan of fanservice Sorcerer's Wand and Shadowspear are other equipments you can find with Urza's Saga if you play Modern.
Maybe a GW version of such a deck can appear in Tier 3 status in Modern. The Colossus Hammer deck seems better overall.

I sure wish that I played more D&D in order to appreciate the flavor of this set more. Nonetheless, it still feels like a homerun for me. I like the creativity and this card is no exception to that.
