Today Gavin interviews Corey Bowen, to see the full extent of the dice rolling mechanic. They also preview the first dice rolling card that isn't just coin flip+.
Oh, Delina, Wild Mage was previewed. Seems like a fine time to mention that she has a bit of errata. The last line is changing to “You may roll again.” A brief explanation to follow. #WotCstaff
In most cases, of course you’ll roll again. But you can get into situations where you become the odds-on favorite to keep rolling until the end of time. In those cases, rather than ask you to leave your family, career, etc. to roll dice full time, there’s now an off switch.

Good - I read the card as previewed and immediately was worried that I'd get an infraction for slow play by attacking with her with another creature.
Seems like Delina and Pixie Guide might be the new Kikki-Jikki combo, and I think that's probably okay.
You have a 49% chance that the first Delina shot fizzles and makes one Pixie with one Pixie Guide out. I don't like my odds at nigh-coin-flip rates like this.

Whether or not it ends up actually being reliable, I can 100% see wizards banning one of those cards if the combo gets popular. If a major tournament comes up and one of the major meta decks makes victory or defeat come down to a literal dice roll, that could leave a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths.
Seriously, coin flipping is rare for a darn good reason (and that’s coming from someone who loves dice rolls and coin flips).

Sure, it's inconsistent as heck but KJ combo should be less reliable, it's exactly the consistency that makes it unfun to play against. It's nice to have the possibility of an infinite token combo in Standard but I sure as heck don't want it to go off on T4 every game.
I'm sure there are ways to increase the number of pixies on the board in the upcoming standard.
I'm not sure how that 0-day errata makes Wizards seems maths-challenged vs how power of 4 work. With 5s per roll, you have a one-in-16-millions chance of keeping rolling after *one minute*. One in *256 thousand billions* of still be rolling after two minutes.
Edit, it's 15 inclusive, so the odds are a bit lower, but still...

Note that I said this earlier about the "keep rolling" topic:

Wizards does not like playing the odds. Wizards wants certainty. The example given in https://blogs.magicjudges.org/rules/ipg3-3 (for slow play) specifically mention milling until you hit Emrakul in the last 2 cards (we can actually generalize this to "hit a certain sorcery in the graveyard before any Emrakuls"). It also specifically says this:

It doesn't matter how small the chance of failure is; if it's there, you can't loop.
The horror is that every die roll, card self-mill, and library shuffle can take 1 nanosecond and you can still go to time in tournament play. (We'll say that the Delina failure chance is the chance that you're still stuck rolling dice after making a million tokens with her in the same turn.)
As far as I can tell, this is the reason why Delina has Day 0 errata.
Erm, the token copy comes into play attacking, if you copy her herself, the copy will not trigger again.
Exactly! I'm not a rules surgeon and I still get that.
Would be a different thing if the Wording was "Choose target creature: Roll a D20. Activate only if this is attacking." (Which a. Is not the wording, and b. Would have a built-in opt-out option because it would be activated rather than triggered)...

You're neglecting the possibility that you targetted pixie guide in the first place. Then you roll 2 dice and pick the highest on the first roll, bumping your odds to 51% or so to roll again. Then you roll 3 dice on the next roll, so your odds to keep the streak going go up. Somewhere around 20 pixie guides in play, you're pretty likely to keep rolling 15+ on at least *one* of your 20+ d20's, to the point that you can't actually stop anymore. So without the may, you'd have to keep rolling until you get all the dice to be 14 or less.

You may want to read that again. 70% to get one copy, 30% for a copy and a reroll.
That's exactly what I say too.

Elspeth and Jhoira rock my world.
ah yeah 70% still high, also 30% for a copy and you may reroll otherwise this will be endless
I wasn't talking about the numbers. If you get 14 or less, you get one token, no roll.
Possibly relevant aside: being out onto the battlefield attacking doesn't trigger the ability.
oh that change my thought then, still good i suppose
