I don't think it's a flutterstorm. It's much better since you don't need to rely on storm count and the tax is higher. Flutterstorm against a typical spells is useless, this can be maindeck in control.

Edit: but given we now have counterspell, I doubt it.

A replicated Lose Focus = Convolute. You have to have some sort of countermagic in Limited.

Lose focus already lost it chance of being the new top dog counterspell in modern and it hasn't even came out yet.


and thats simply counterspell is coming in to the format.

Lose Focus is a very good variation of Mana Leak because it is much more effective in the late game.
The biggest problem is the competition with Counterspell.

you never can have too many counterspells

I love this counterspell from an edh standpoint. One of my favorites in years.

Relatively cheap to cast, even when you have to dump mana into it
Great as a gotcha counterspell
Useable early, and late game
Can trigger magecraft a ton
Can clear a clogged stack
Unconditional in what it can counter

the real upside for Lose Focus is that it can actually counter multiple spells.

yeah, it's a super corner case but for 4 mana, for example, you can counter 3 copies of a Storm Spell or counter some spell and it's copy made by something else... anything goes.

I doubt this is seeing play in constructed, but the upside is there.

if a deck would run stuff like Mana Leak, you probably are better of with Lose Focus as an alternative.

But thats about it.
