Ruxa, Patient Professor - Am I correct in thinking her first ability has no effect in this deck? I get that her second and third abilities affect Fractals.
Ruxa isn't so much a Bear tribal card as a Vanilla tribal card. Which, I think, is a first. Not sure how to feel about that. If this had been in Strixhaven, it might've been more useful during Drafts and such, but even then it's...weird. It's...Stompy without Trample because you can just deal damage even if you're chump blocked. Really weird direction they went in with this.
It'll be the cheapest Green deck you ever throw together. None of the cards needed for it are staples or bank-breaking. The only problem is that if you use a card that gives your creatures protection or indestructible or hexproof, it'll switch off Ruxa entirely that turn. Regenerating them is a better bet.
I've been unable to sit still at my keyboard ALL DAY from the thrill of Spawning Kraken!
The card is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! People are seriously complaining about THIS? This card is exactly, precisely, deliberately what I wanted! The THEME of it is just PERFECT! A kraken, spawning MORE krakens! I absolutely adore that! And what's just brilliant is that they're my FAVORITE token! I ADORE the 9/9 Blue Kraken token from THEROS painted by Dan Scott, it's my FAVORITE and I am always praying my Reef Worm gets killed or go through desperate loops to bomb a Kiora JUST TO PUT ONE OUT AT LEAST ONCE and it's AGONIZING to just get ONE into play!
BUT NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW my pretties
NOW
I GET MY 9/9 PRECEIOUS BLUE BABESH OUT WITH EASE AND IT GREAT QUANTITIES!
It's the quality
AND THE QUANTITY
Dude I just freaking love and adore this card. It's EXACTLY CORRECT - 6 CMC - not too high, not too low (meaning synergy with Brinelin, one of my FAVORITE sea creatures) - 6 CMC is EXACTLY right for this creature to be optimal and synergistic
Of all sea creatures, Krakens are my favorite - CHECK BISH
But this effect really, really, truly impressed me. It's phenomenal power. It alleviates the need to hard cast big sea monsters every turn to have field presence - once this BEAUTY is out, similar to Koma she does all the work FOR ME to put out the most GORGEOUS, BEAUTIFUL THEROSSSSSSS tokens in MTG
The effect is just most excellent - Sea monster themed, generates the perfect sea monster token creatures, including from ITSELF connecting, and the condition isn't just feasible, it's EXACTLY what a sea monster deck is meant to do - SMASH WITH THE SEAAAAAA !
Freaking get sunk and wrecked ho, there is literally nothing stopping this beast. Since ARIXMETHES (GLEE) my SEA BABESH deck has been UG, and I absolutely employ that Green to TUTOR EVER CREATURE I want at a whim, EVERY GAME. I ALWAYS have Serpent of Yawning Depths and BOTH Thassa in play to facilitate this precious. It's SIMIC people - blanket TRAMPLE is easy, tutoring creatures is HAPPENING
I don't care if it's not Legendary, it's WHAT I WANT And it's elegant, exceptional, insightful design, delivering what my deck wants.
I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT to slot this brilliant gem into my favorite deck. It's PHENOMENAL. My friends all loved and celebrated it, knowing I am going to spend entire games ensuring this connects, and connects nice and well
FINALLY an efficient, FUN, THEMATIC method of putting out 9/9 blue Theros Kraken tokens!!!!!
I'VE WANTED THIS SO LONG. I'm still playing Reef Worm alongside Spawning Kraken too, because it's just never enough, also THEME.
BTW, just wait, I'm going to have Arixmethes, Spawning Kraken and Thassa out, probably Serpent of Yawning Depths too, and these are just all going to connect. And hell, I'm going to DRAW off Bident of Thassa while I hemorrhage out beautiful kraken armies, and your weeping shall salt the seas in which you shall drown in tenticular briny DEATH
Yeah, toss down an asceticism and you're good to go.
Nope - Asceticism grants hexproof which makes Ruxa unhappy.
Does this actually imply the Oracle text of Asceticism is functional errata? The original wording does not read that your creatures get hexproof. To me that would be:
"Creatures you control have "This creature can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control.""
Instead it just says your creatures can't be targeted.
Reef Worm thank heavens this would have spiked faster than a rocket if not reprinted in this
Why, because Adrix and Nev can turn it into eight 9/9s? Lmao yeah sure, just like how Birgi, God of Storytelling would spike to $100 because Grinning Ignus was reprinted, right?
Janky Standard and EDH cards aren't going to spike 1,000+% just because of some wacky new card, unless their interaction is powerful, consistent, and broad enough to be integrated into a wide multitude of decks. The only exception to this that I've seen for Strixhaven is Chain of Smog as an infinite magecraft enabler, which is a card from a 19-year-old set that's only ever had a single printing. And even then, Chain of Smog is already starting to see some retraction.
I highly encourage people to think more critically before they jump to conclusions and make these goofy claims about bad cards becoming absurdly expensive staples.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
Yeah, toss down an asceticism and you're good to go.

No, an inability to be targeted would be Shroud, not Hexproof.
In any case "X is unable to be targeted by spells and abilities your opponents control" and Hexproof are one and the same, because the rules text for Hexproof is exactly that.
For example, Privileged Position used to read "Other permanents you control can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control". When the Guild decks came out a few years ago, the card was reprinted, only it now read "Other permanents you control have hexproof". Same card, different wording, but same ability.

It doesn't imply it, the oracle text of Asceticism is literally "creatures you control have hexproof."
Blarg, I didn't think to look at the Oracle text for Asceticism. Just remembered how it used to be worded and it seemed more like the stuff that would work with Muraganda Petroglyphs, a la "Your creatures can't be blocked."
Yes, I FULLY realize that. What I'm saying is that the current Oracle wording makes the card different in terms of gameplay than the original printing. See what ThyLordQ is saying.

Apologies for the confusion; I admit that I wasn’t entirely sure what you were asking. Especially since, as far as I can tell, the printed wording on Asceticism is totally interchangeable with the ability / rules text of hexproof.

It is and it isn't. It's the whole thing about Hexproof being changed from a state to a keyword. Sort of like how Armadillo Cloak and Unflinching Courage work differently. Or like how Hidden Path won't work with Ruxa, but Familiar Ground will.
Edit: Or like how Canopy Cover would work with your creatures in a Ruxa deck. (Also had to edit spelling for Ruxa.)
Yeah, that seems to be the case. It's one of those situations like Damage on the Stack, where it completely alters how a small subset of cards work, but not enough to make those cards worth getting errata.
Yeah, it happens every time they keyword something that was previously not. There are other examples like Fervor and Goblin War Drums that were printed before Haste and Menace were keyworded respectively.

It's the most Timmy card I've ever seen. And yet I find myself wanting to play with it. Leatherback Baloth, Gigantosaurus, Kalonian Tusker, etc, etc...

Surprised Tiro hasn’t ‘gasmed over the Kraken yet...

Asceticism gives Hexproof unfortunately.
