Can we just go back to hating Secret Lairs and not try to analyze this? We all knew this was coming, just like I'm sure a LGBTQ one will come this year as well, this is not a surprise. I have no problem with them trying to do this, but I will continue to hate Secret Lairs.
Yes, I need to educate myself because companies don't tastelessly market to whatever is 'trending' for the sake of milking out money from people who might not otherwise buy the product.
Yes, I need to educate myself because companies don't tastelessly market to whatever is 'trending' for the sake of milking out money from people who might not otherwise buy the product.
I'm just going to say this, no one is buying a product because they have support of something on said product. They don't. When it comes to your example people will buy Coke for a sugary beverage that they enjoy not because they throw some symbol on it to placate a certain section of the populace.
WotC wants to be "liberal" because if they were "conservative" there wouldn't be gay/lesbian/trans characters because those are "sins against Jesus Christ our savior". There wouldn't be black characters because blacks are only poor thugs who glorify drugs and hookers.
100% of the proceeds of this secret lair go charity. What’s wrong with that? Oh, you don’t like that the charity only helps black women and girls? Well, do you complain every time you see a St Jude’s commercial because they only help children?
Oh, you think giving black women a little bit more representation in the game is a disingenuous attempt to... do what, exactly? What’s going to happen? What will happen when WotC makes these reprints with black female characters on them? How is the world going to end?
WotC's gonna WotC I guess. Gotta respect that it's for charity at least.
I see this and all I can think of is that white dude Wizards employee a couple years ago who tweeted about how much there's too many white males in the company and how there should be more diversity and urged black people to apply so they could get hired because they're black (while doing nothing, of course, that would risk his own position at Wizards- it's OTHER white people who should be replaced right?)
WotC's gonna WotC.
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.
Tragic the pandering. More woke dollar milking for people to virtue signal with.
Really bruh? All of the proceeds are going to charity and the art so far is pretty damn slick. This is what the last charity box should've been, why you hating?
its 100% to charity?
if that's true, thats a huge step in the right direction for this sort of product. depending on the cards included it makes it much more reasonable to purchase, and may get me to actually buy one despite my hate for secret lairs.

No one buys something because of anything like that. But it certainly can help when there are multiple choices available. I'd rather buy something that supports a good cause than buy something that doesn't. If it's going to charity, may as well get something when I'm donating.
Has WOTC ever done anything for men? Young men? Men of color, even? Just curious. There's all this criticism of "toxic masculinity" but no attempts to cultivate healthy male development. More men are in prisons, dying in wars, expected to pay the bill on dates, have their abuse and emotional turmoils dismissed and told to "man up" and here we are.
That said, I like the art for Ponder, especially featuring known legends, and I'm not going to knock something for charity during an appropriate month. I can understand some frustration with how one-sided WOTC has been, but look no further than White in EDH to understand why. They get wrapped up sometimes in linear thinking. Basri is our only Arabic character so... there's more on the racial spectrum guys. But again, it's Black History Month.
This is the old question "Why isn't there a White History Month?" rephrased. There are tons of products that target or glorify men in Magic's history. It's called "Virtually every set".
I love products like this because they get all the right people super upset lol.
There's always comfort in knowing the vocal minority of backwards ass people are a losing and dying breed. The world is (has been) moving forward with them throwing a fit in it, or simply without them.

Wait, WotC is doing a great thing for Black girls, and your first thought was "what about me?" Yikes.
At this point it's kinda bread and butter to the MO of some of these regular naysayers.
All we can do is speak out, block, and/or report.
There's a persistent pattern here of particular users always going out of their way to problematize greater inclusivity for marginalized folks and folx.
Are there any good online MtG communities that don't put up with this kinda stuff that one can join?
The Vorthos community on this here website is still pretty small, and I'd be willing to join other sites and help build a Vorthos/Timmie community there if its user base is a little more progressive than MtGsalv.

Funnily enough, that guy doesn't work at Wizards anymore. Instead, this SL was designed by two black women, one of whom has been working there since at least 2018.

This used to be a community that was well moderated and didn't allow stuff like this, much less allow the same people to say the same bigoted stuff over and over with little to no consequences, but that just isn't the case anymore. If anyone can recommend a community withh plenty of discussion that will actually put their foot down when it comes to bigots peddling hate speech left and right, please let me know because I'd like to join.

Protection from reason (Decadent_Creed can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by reason.)
Was anyone "supposed to" be born?
Was anything "supposed to" exist?
Why ask silly rhetorical questions?
In different quantum realities, Shalai can be black, Caucasian, Hispanic, indigenous, immortal, Jewish, genderless, hermaphroditic, or Bolas's toothbrush.
Rumor has it Jesus was dark-skinned, but has been misrepresented time and time again in artwork ever since. Some say he wasn't a messiah or never existed at all.
Does any of it really matter, especially in the case of art depicting fictitious characters?
Why is the Abrahamic God traditionally depicted as male and bearded? Presumption? Invention? Imagination?
Do they not have razors in heaven? It he hiding a scar on his chin?
Are Llanowar elves "blackfishing" now because older artwork showed they had lighter skin and red hair?
Maybe the lighting is just bad in that forest?
How characters are depicted in artwork and literature shouldn't be taken for fact as we know that even history isn't always written with accuracy.
We create the images we want to see, we want others to see, or that we believe others want to see.
Ultimately, it's all about how the audience consuming that artwork wants to imagine their heroes and villains, and now, as always, we can see them every which way.
Different representations and different interpretations which invoke or address conversation about controversy and various social issues are what make great art. By that metric alone, this artwork and product have already succeeded on announcement before even going on sale or fully revealing its contents.
Still not impressed?
This is a great product and guaranteed to go up in value as is the case with all Secret Lairs, so anyone who doesn't order several will be losing out.
This Shalai will definitely go in my Uril deck as I like the red in the art, but I'll be keeping my original foil in Selvala whose art includes more green.
Yikes, I knew MTGS had a super toxic community, but I thought at least it was beyond outright racism. Ffs guys, if a traditionally oppressed group getting a little light pandering during a month dedicated to them really gets your panties in a twist please look inside yourself and think about why you feel that way.
This product is great so far. Excellent art, solid (if not particularly highly desirable) card picks, and a good cause. They'd have to include a bunch of serious duds from here on to scuttle the box.

Quoting a political party that the majority calls themselves conservatives ( 69% of Republicans described themselves as "conservative", while 25% opted for the term "moderate", and another 5% self-identified as "liberal" - from Gallup) but the values they defend sometimes are in contrast with what other conservatives groups and autors defend. If you can only think about USA when you do your remarks then yes you have a point about the leaders of the republican party being biggots but that doesnt mean all republicans think the same as those. For exemple back in 2011 conservatives that made several donations to gop made several donations/gave financial suport to gay couples and gay rights organizations ... This despite being conservative and donating to the republican party (link soo ppl don't have to search themselves in internet archives etc https://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/14/nyregion/donors-to-gop-are-backing-gay-marriage-push.html/ )

Also condemning a movement that peached/agreed with radical protests and vandalism is not equal to being racists or to think that blacks("Afro-descendants" etc) are " only poor thugs who glorify drugs and hookers " like u wrote. Was Martin Luther King, Jr against gay people because he was religious and a conservative? Thats the same you are implying here.
Wish you americans could go to europe or latin america more. No, Conservatism is not about being anti gay anti black or whatever you think, it is more about defending the institutions: marriage (yes conservatives can be homosexuals), religion (yes christianity acepts homosexuals and blacks..., at least most do, yes we know that there plenty of churchs that condem homosexualism), nation and political/social institutions as well as civil rights.

If you really think BLM was just about vandalism, or the history of the GOP working closely with White Supremacist groups to disenfranchise African-American (and Latino) voters is just something to ignore, I'm not sure what else to say.
And yes, Dr. King was severely against homosexuals, with his teachings being used into the 80s and 90s to condemn gays and lesbians during the AIDS crisis by African-American preachers. Just because someone has been oppressed doesn't mean they can't oppress others themselves.
