Jace, Liliana, Gideon, and Chandra tilt the scales enough I imagine. Especially as those aren’t the only ones who qualify. We could go through every instance of face cards from the original Zendikar onward, but between that and the sheer quantity I don’t see it turning out to be amazing for your argument. Though that said the entire point is to try and balance the scales better.
Also, many other people who use such symbols are actual fans of vikings, scandinavian culture, certain TV series' fans, including people who are non-white.
Perpetuating the idea that "hey look I got a cool Mjollnir tattoo"="I'm a nazi" only helps create more division.
From the forum rules: "You may attack ideas, but do so while being civil."
I hope this was civil enough. I'm literally attacking an idea, not a person.
I mean... what are we debating exactly?
I'm happy about non-white people enjoying scandivinavian culture (and white non-white supremactists too). They will be happy about Kaldheim. They will not be bothered by Kaya and Niko. So what's the problem?
Another kind of people, on the other hand, will have a problem... and honestly i'm glad that wotc got this chance to not bow in front of them.

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
I come from the Andes region. Symbols like the Hammer and Sickle, the Guñelve and the Clava have also been appropiated by narco-terrorist, racially inspired groups such as Sendero Luminoso and Coordinadora Arauco-Malleco. I doubt that if I displayed any of those here anyone would bat an eye. WOTC/this community is so US-centric and they're not even aware of it (which is fine, it's the country that produces the game), but I'd hope they'd be honest enough to just go with it instead of going "hey, we made a brown-haired PW, that represents you right Latinos?"
Btw, Latino or Latinx is such a nonsense term anyway. People from the Cono Sur have almost nothing to do with Mexicans or Caribbeans. If anything it only demonstrates ignorance of them.
17 "Diversity picks" in Standard Legendary characters represented on cards:
Ashiok - Non-Binary
Azusa - Female, Japanese
Basri - Middle-Eastern
Chandra - Female, (Indian?)
Eutropia - Female, Black
Jolrael - Female, Black
Kaervek - Black
Linden - Female, Black
Mangara - Black
Narset - Female, Asian
Niambi - Female, Black
Oko - Asian
Rielle - Female, Black
Subira - Female, Black
Tazri - Female, Black
Teferi - Black
Vivien - Female, Black
Out of 113 characters.
Also, I take minor issue with this point. There's quantitative minority, and there's qualitative minority. Sure, quantitatively speaking, there's more "white" characters in MTG, but in terms of who are emphasized and displayed the most? I took a look at product and key art from recent past products. If it's not a monster or non-human character in the art, it's mostly one of those "minority" characters in main display. Teferi for Core2021, Vivien in Ikoria, Chandra in Core 2020, and now Kaya in Kaldheim. Yes, there was Rowan in Eldraine and Jace and Liliana here and there, but as I said, the "overrepresentation of white people" argument is vastly exaggerated IMO.
There's a difference between "a terrorist group in our nation has adopted certain symbols" and "these symbols were adopted by a group who committed some of the worst atrocities in human history, used as a tool to recruit more people to their side, and are still used by the remnants of that group as a way to show their allegiance without being blatant."
And yes, Latinx is an extremely broad group that consists of an absolute metric tonne of different peoples who have a wide, wide variety of cultural differences. Phenotypic classifications don't care about culture. It's why you can have almost a quarter of the entire South American population be either black or mixed, and they're considered black rather than Latinx, despite them sharing more culturally with you than a Mexican does with you, for example.
As for the latter point, you are experiencing the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, wherein you have accidentally primed yourself to see something as happening more often than it may actually be happening.
(Additionally, when people are referring to the overabundance of white people in MtG, we're referring to the fact that Mirage, one of MtG's first sets with a large amount of PoC in it, came out in 1996, and then it was over a decade before we saw any other plane have more than one or two card's worth.)
Can we not complain about seeing minority characters featured? Can we not call people delusional and use loaded current events to bash people? We understand that you guys feel a certain type of way seeing some minority characters -at all- but why do we have to hear about it? Why bring up how you think there's too many black people in Magic? Can you guys find a way to not bring up anti-CNN conspiracy theories and malign racial representation in every thread regardless of how unrelated it is?
At this point, expecting a plane's civilization to almost or exactly match its real world counterpart is not going to end well. WotC has demonstrated that they will include a multiracial and diverse populous in their worlds because that is a great power of fantasy: you can lift things from the real world and put a more ideal spin on things, like population diversity. This allows them to not only be inclusive, but also for more flexible storytelling when needed. They've consistently done this, and yes it has stepped up a bit in the last few years, but that's not a bad thing. So yeah, while Kaldheim is Norse inspired, it will not shock me when I see nonwhite characters living on that plane in greater numbers than actually in Scandinavia.
It feels to me that 'athlete' can fall into any of the five colors, depending on motivation. Green is probably most natural, given the physical 'natural' contest, and we see that with The First Iroan Games. However, red has the passion of athleticism (Hero of the Games), black has the competitiveness, and white has the teamwork and self-discipline. I can certainly see Blue getting in on it with rigidness and self improvement.
Physical study and excellence is certainly a newer spotlight for blue, but we have seen physically proficient characters in blue, such as the ninja - who achieve their physical excellence through training and study. Lu Xun, Scholar General and Sun Ce, Young Conquerer could be another? Zhou Yu, Chief Commander is no slouch either, as an 8/8. Or the representation of monks with Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest?
This also feels right at home on Theros, as the real world comparison - the Olympic Games, welcomed competitors of all walks of life - it makes sense that there would be athletes of all color alignments represented. This also aligns with some real world examples, such as Plato, who was a wrestler and wrestling coach. Socrates was a distinguished soldier.
Overall, we haven't seen a lot of sports at all in magic - The most athletic event would likely be the Coliseum in the Battlebond set, where we see a variety of charaters, from Green having the physically weakest contestant, to Will Kenrith being a Blue character with good physical prowess.
I can definitely see your point about athletes falling into all five colors. The bit that threw me is the training until perfect bit of Niko's character feels pretty white to me, although it can fit blue. When I think of blue in the context of sports I picture kinesiology studies and charts of times and the actual complicated physics involved even in weightlifting. I suppose that the strict focus on those elements are meant to be Niko's niche but it kind of feels like they told us and didn't show us. Not to mention the mirror trap things. Feels very white to me as trapping something temporarily falls into white's color pie mechanically with things like Oblivion Ring and Prison Realm.
These are just my first impressions from a bio blurb though and I can see the possibility of their blueness being fleshed out more clearly when we know more about them.

Training until perfect might be a White aspect in a team sport, but for an individual sport, I think Blue makes a lot of sense. We just aren't used to it being shown, because, well, the most prominent blue characters have been cerebral.
Personally, I'm excited about this development and hope we see more characters reshaping how we view color identity soon. These new characters have reinvigorated me, that is for sure.
I wonder if Niko really could jailbreak Nicol Bolas from his prison. We don't really know the full extent of Nico's abilities but the fact that they can transport fellow planeswalkers in-plane is interesting and I'm curious if the same can be done for the Elder Dragon between planes.
We know for certain the Ugin himself transported Nicol Bolas to the Meditation Realm and it was said that this was somehow possible due to Nicol Bolas being an Elder Dragon, which while a hand wave, is an acceptable hand-wave.
I don't want another Bolas arc right away but he's a useful narrational tool for the story and it's nice to know we may see him again.

Maybe. Probably not is my guess tho. And I’d wager that the maybe depends on how 1:1 they want to have their representation of Freya be. Like if the Odin analogue takes an Einir wife and allows her to maintain her godhood we might see that but otherwise I think the “Creature - God” in this set will all be the other group.
Y'all really sounding like Jussie Smollett with these delusions.
The idea that far-right groups use Norse symbology is a demonstrable fact. The actual Nazis used a bunch of them- the whole idea of the Aryan race was linked with this sort of history.
This isn't a debatable point.
Reaching sis. Y'all looking for racism anywhere you can find it, and inventing/baiting it anywhere you can't. Spare us your white guilt, not all of us are American, and creating new people to bully (even your own) isn't changing the past, but retooling those sins to create new victims. You haven't seen real oppression in the modern era, and you shouldn't want to. Your intentions are admirable, but it's really holding us all back by reviving old tensions. It's very convienent for liberals to occupy the nation with old, dated and mostly expired racial emotions (tried and true) to overlook how increasing taxes for them to pocket hasn't actually made any difference except create new avenues for our bloated government to curiously churn out millionaire politicians.

You’re talking an awful lot on a matter you clearly know nothing about. If you had any involvement in polytheist matters you’d... well, I would like to say realize how wrong you are but you sticking your head in the sand could be a thing too. It’s far, far too prominent.

And if you thought PC WOTC was using that instead of simply making this Magic's take on Norse Mythology, you're deluding yourself and running the same basic algorithm you've been taught to run in every situation. Watch less TV sis.
Mind boggling that this is even something people feel the need to argue. Let them write the characters they want to write. How does it hurt you to have a non-binary character in the game? Just leave it be. 🙄

If you like to spend 15 actual seconds on google, you can find clear evidence for the fact the nazis did in fact use a bunch of runic symbols and others have continued to do so on some scale. This is a fact.
Now, what should we do about this fact with regards to a norse themed set? Well, that's a different question. But we can say for a fact Nazis and Nazi-likes will be interested in this stuff for all the wrong reasons, and I don't know, maybe that's something to just consider for a second in how we approach the subject.
All that was being suggested was that including black people and LGBT+ people in a Norse world was a strike against giving fascists what they want from this sort of world, and you know, that sounds like a nice thing to do.

Things are only racist if you let them be. Maybe a rune is just a rune. Ever think about that?
Also, when a world or setting is based upon a segment of a human civilization the chances of diversity as they apply to today's standards are going to be not as declared as you'd like them to be. A gender-neutral character transcends skin tone and ethnicity, so we can leave that out.

See this is why we don't want you guys bringing up how you'd like to see less black people all the time. Because it always devolves into this right wing psycho babble.
