Wheeeeeee none of these are exciting and shouldve been used to support commander legends by at least one of them having legends in it wheeee
The seb one at least has a good selection of reprints, but the rocks one sucks ass given the rocks that couldve and shouldve been included.
The only reason mana vault is worth what it is is because its never reprinted to a reasonable degree. It sees play in just one format but is 50 dollars, 10 years ago it was 3. God forbid we offer creative reprints.
The only way Mana Vault will ever go down in price is if usage drops (like Tarmogoyf) or it gets reprinted in a Standard-legal set as either a rare or a mythic rare, and then get a million different frame treatments for Collector Boosters. The former won't happen anytime soon, and Standard/Pioneer/Historic/Modern does not need more overpowered ramp options.
not to get too far off topic but you're writing it off and accepting things for as they are. there is no reason the card should be pushing the price it is. there is no reason that every time its reprint it should be at mythic rare. this is the sort of card that should've been in any number of artifact based commander precons but we just didn't get it. instead it gets jammed into sets at mythic to help sell them. fetchlands are much the same issue. trot out to sell rather than just included. we use to get decent reprints in precons, we use to get decent reprints in sets, now once a card hits a higher price because it hasn't been reprint in awhile, it stays there because the people controlling the reprints milk it. there's countless examples of things that are much higher than they should be, that are also commander staples, or legacy staples, or whatever staple. the tools to reprint these cards outside of standard, or even modern, are all there and they're just not ever being utilized in a way that rewards the consumer, and we just accept it because that's the world they've created. it is actually passive acknowledgement of the secondary market, and goes a long way toward labeling the game as gambling.
all of that said, i really like the cards picked for the seb lair, except swamp. they were on a roll and then its like someone said hey we can't give them too much value. swamp.
personally, i think that too scums the customer and isn't utilizing this product the way it should be, but if it is real maybe they gave him a list of cards to pick from and it was his choice not theirs or something.
For some reason, I find the Seb McKinnon secret lair to be hard to believe. Maybe it's because it explicitly promotes the work of one artist in a non-unified context.
These products are literally: "Hey, what are people obsessing over right now? Let's print a product that targets THAT and go make some easy money." There is no rulebook they are following at all other than that, I promise you.
People won't shut up about the guy's art. Every single set. This is exactly what they would choose.
Bob Ross lands are a bit 'memey' but exactly the same thing.
Will the Bob Ross Forests have happy little trees?
I kind of hope these are real, I'd like to pick up a Damnation for a bit cheaper than it currently is (Secret Lair or otherwise). A box of rocks is lolz

I wouldn't pick up the secret lair for Damnation (unless I'm in a really hurry), actually.
You're telling me you want to pay secret lair prices for... generous estimates, $20 worth of stuff? most of which is wrapped up in two of the cards? Commander's Sphere and Darksteel Ingot are both worth less than 50 cents and ingot should only be played if you're on a seriously tight budget.

Currently between Gilded Lotus and Chromatic Lantern you're looking at $13-$14 for what is most likely going to be $30. If the SL is $20 then it's....alright, but at $30 that's just not smart and anything higher than that is plain insanity.
If this was 5 years ago when both cards were $10+ then at $30 this would be not terrible, but right now for $30 it kind of is.
I'd consider John Avon lands. Forget Bob Ross. How about Banksy Enchantments or Chuck Close Legends??? Where does it end?
Hard pass on all of them. And I'm a big fan of McKinnon too.

This is a good point, and I'd really like Damnation if it were in an old border. idk if they will, but you're probably right in that it'll be reprinted.
What if Box of Rocks had actual rocks for their art?
In general I think going with basic lands for secret lairs makes a lot of sense, since they are a great and popular way to customize decks and a perfect angle to sell special art stuff to those who are willing to pay for it. Also, Bob Ross fits nicely here imo.
The 2 of each part is kinda insulting though. When asking a premium price for basics, at least make it enough for a deck...
Glad the rumors from Alpha Investments about a Rick and Morty Secret Lair didn't turn out to be true.
I ended up dropping the show after Season 2 when it started to get a lot darker.

Maybe it's an indicator that they'll intersperse popular artists' renditions of certain cards? Like a ... Rebecca Guay cycle that I'd buy 1000 of? I can't think of many classic artists that still are alive or paint for Wizards anymore.

So... I was just thinking about these secret lairs and had a really awful thought that I want to share.
While a lot of people have complained that "Box of Rocks" isn't worth the price tag, I personally hope that the product is as bad as it seems. Not because I love terrible products, mind you, but because Wizards does have a tool to make the already announced product more than worthwhile.
Packing little "secrets" (Lucille, stained glass walkers, Bob Ross evolving wilds) has been a thing since secret lairs were first started... but they generally aren't the reason to buy the lair and are generally known about when the secret lair goes on sale.
Imagine what would happen if everyone who took a wild chance on "Box of Rocks" opened their package and found a totally unadvertised chrome mox or mox opal thrown in. Wizards could try to spin it as a special Holiday surprise and a gift for people who really enjoy secret lair products... and it would turn up the FOMO to the Nth degree.
The moment that Wizards starts using the possibility of high-value "extras" in secret lairs, passing up on seemingly bad deals creates a bigger risk of "missing out"... and anyone who bets on a particularly unexciting lair and doesn't get what they want (Imagine buying a suspiciously expensive "Games Children Play" lair with the hope that wizards would OBVIOUSLY put in a secret sensei's divining top and finding a stuffy doll instead) rams right into WotC's draconian return policy.
So... yeah. While I'm not happy that a (relatively) unimpressive lair was announced, I hope that these lairs stay as good or bad as they first appear.
My two favorite artists are Ken Marschall and James Flood. If we ever got an island with their maritime art I would lose it. Omg I love what Flood does with water. Ironically.
Those bob ross lands are pretty spectacular but **** getting enough of them to actually use them anywhere other than like that legacy deck that runs 1 swamp
When it comes to these Bob Ross lands are these pieces he did in the past or pieces someone else did in his style? I know Bob Ross and watched him some when I was younger, but I don't really know the story behind these lands.

I would imagine they are his works, and they paid his estate or whoever owns his works. I can't imagine the implications of having him as the artist credit when its someone else's work, even if it is in his style.

Remember that whole Time Spiral Remixed set that's coming out between first and second quarter next year? I am willing to be my bottom dollar that Damnation will be in that set (along with Akroma's Memorial, Coalition Relic, Dryad Arbor, Gauntlets of Power, Imp's Mischief, Pact of Negation, Tolaria West, Rift Bolt, Simian Spirit Guide, Ancestral Vision, Street Wraith, Tarmogoyf...)
