I don't mind doing a crossover secret lair at all, but Walking Dead doesn't seem like a great choice. It's well past its peak of popularity and doesn't fit very well with Magic. It feels a lot more like an advertisement for both those reasons compared to the Godzilla promo. That said, this is largely quibbles.
But the problem of doing mechanically unique cards here is genuinely concerning. WotC has reassured us they would be willing to reprint these, but their record on reprints is spotty and even in an ideal world that will take time to organise. And beyond that, this model of monetization and card distribution is not good on principle. To a certain degree, the problems with Secret Lair have always had a lot to do with Magic larger monetization model, but this is really setting apart Secret Lair as not just being a part of Magic existing questionable business practice, but another one on top of it.
No matter how janky these cards ending up being, the nature of selling them this way is inflating their price and limiting their access for absolutely no benefit to the consumer. And I definitely don't want to see it get worse if this is repeated.
It's not going to destroy Magic, in fact this will probably not amount to that much in-and-of-itself, but this is really not a good move and it doesn't bode well for what other questionable tactics WotC might use to sell product in the future.
We've had commander decks, planechase decks, planeswalker decks, theme boosters, global series gift box, Game Night, buy a box promos, and now this.
Every exclusive card in commander decks, planechase decks, planeswalker decks, theme boosters and whatever can be reprinted. These ones can't.
Do you understand now?
While that's true, how many exclusive cards have ever been reprinted? Obviously, this is a bad place for aggressively costed cards or ones with new super splashy abilities, but one of these is Fleshbag Marauder and the other is Cloudgoat Ranger. We've seen plenty of cards like them and plenty of nickel bin uncommons. Making them into a mid range mana cost multicolored legendary doesn't exactly inspire me to see this as a problem. It actually sounds more like fear mongering from people that just hate secret lair on principle.

And what happens when thats not the case?
It will happen if it turns a profit. Examples of that slippery slope already exist everywhere so its an inevitability
It isn't a slippery slope. Wizards only makes money the very first time a card is sold. They have no real incentive to make prohibitively expensive cards they won't be able to reprint at any time they want because the reprint will make them money. The few exclusive cards they have reprinted are the cards that tend to command high prices because they're so unique or powerful. In order to buy into this argument, we have to assume that Wizards' goal isn't to make money, but simply to piss in your Cheerios because they hate their players. If they wanted to make a super powerful or unique card that commands a high price tag, why not simply print it at mythic in a higher priced supplemental set? Also, despite the ramp up of exclusive cards, why hasn't there been another problem since the time walk? The mistakes tend to be cards from very early in the process of figuring out how to make exclusive cards. Now, Atraxa was a weird spot but that was really the first pro planeswalker commander AND the first ever crop of 4 colored commanders.
This is getting worse by the minute Glenn also looks very playable in commander like negan since it’s almost a legendary Cold-Eyed Selkie Since it’s skulk rather than islandwalk
Sheldon and the RC committe Are listening to us, taking notes and weighing options Basicly they are discussing TWD cards
and they will have something to say and will definatly be before the secret lair drops
in other words This looks like a sign TWD cards will probably be considered silver bordered In commander format
Honestly? Good.
"Oh you want this new commander that has a playstyle you like? Well why didn't you buy it in this limited window for this price? Not in your country? OOooh don't worry, you can just buy it for this marked up price from someone on ebay. Thats fine right?"

You mean besides the fact that they are "talking it over" and how they invited people over to their discord to weigh in. And yeah the discussion around the card was mostly negative towards wizards decision and wanted it considered banned to send a message to wizards that this practice is unacceptable. Literally the chat was flying with how fast it was going.
Its not about power. Its about limited availability for a FOMO effect as Wizards has actually stepped into the ring of selling singles of brand new cards that are not reprints.

I'm 100% with you on this. My first take was that "Hey these look fun" but the more I thought about it the more this conclusion seemed to be obvious. Vanity cards are one thing but selling unique cards at a premium price for a limited time is just gross. The EDH/Commander community needs to voice their disapproval of this tactic to WotC now or it's just going to get worse, I'm already kind of sick of the secret lairs and if this is the direction they want to take it, we should all be standing against it on principle alone.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.

There is no slippery slope fear here. There is only the lack of confidence that Wizards can balance cards such that they don't accidentally print a card far stronger than intended and a lack of confidence in their willingness to reprint indemand cards at a reasonable pace. Both of which are supported by history.
As for their track record. Unique Buy a box promos were pitched as fun cards that wouldn't be constructed playable. They made 10 before abandoning it due to player feedback. Two were standard power houses one of which went on to warp larger formats. If you expect the same failure rate then 20% of the cards they make in these lairs will be format staples which is a huge problem. They do listen so we need to be very loud immediately to stop this before they print a broken card in an exclusive product.
So, we've had exclusive cards in a bunch of preconstructed products over the years. We've had commander decks, planechase decks, planeswalker decks, theme boosters, global series gift box,
But that's not, IMO, a good comparison to this at all.
Those were far, far more available, among other differences.
Also, is it just me, or does WotC seem to be suffering from a form of corporate-level amnesia? The BaB issue w/ Nexus of Fate being something that they should have taken a hint from.

yea mark literally said people were negative toward BAB exclusives
And yes commander decks is a terrible comparison they not exclusive and hey are pretty available (2020 decks were just less because of COVID)
but the real mistake with these is in a way they didn’t keep the promise they made after the whole nalathni dragon incident “no more functional unique promo cards” negan and Glenn are clearly playable in commander and are probably fun to use in the helm if you let go of the fact they are beyond expensive cards
And functional reprints They said that ain’t gonna fix it either Because that’s how you can run two of them look at the flip cards from ixalan and rivals of ixalan with Gaea's Cradle And Tolarian academy
They should just have created a random name and placed it down the TWD character's name (similar to what they did in Ikoria) this way if the card needed reprint it would just be a matter of reprinting it with "real name" and a new art for the "new card" It would even be funnier because ppl would assume those cards would appear in Kalkheim* because of the new names, maybe if they the names were tied to diferent planes it would be more on the face that those card could be reprinted anytime if needed.
*Lets be real, WotC didn't made them in the likes of Zilortha, Strength Incarnate because it probably would drive buyers and players away from this secret lair just by the fact those cards could be previews for Kaldheim and soo players would not buy into the future scarcity that this secret lair has becomed...

I'm pretty sure the Nalathni Dragon prescident has been pretty well annihilated hundreds of times over. I already listed a huge variety of products that have functionally unique cards that are quite possibly available in smaller quantities than a print to demand secret lair.

Every card is available for a limited time and in a limited quantity. This one is simply not sold in stores and is made in as large a quantitiy as desired unlike From the Vault or Commander Arsenal.
It isn't a slippery slope. Wizards only makes money the very first time a card is sold. It's actually 2 cards total that really caused problems out of hundreds. True Name Nemesis did in legacy and Nexus of Fate did in standard. They obviously took a hint from Nexus and never released another exclusive BaB promo that caused problems. People are blowing this way out of proportion and this is apparently 5 different unique cards and tokens for $50. Its price per card isn't necessarily going to be any worse than lots of other exclusive product cards. They're also all legendary so far and probably not going to be played a ton other than as a commander. So, how many gold cards are played in legacy/vintage? Infact, how many cards over 2 mana are? They tend to be really absurd on the power level.
This is garbage, Negan has a magic card but characters from mtg lore like Gix and Commodore Guf don't (as of yet)
Don't worry they will be printed in commander legends as shitty monocolored partners.
God wotc is really dropping the ball in this last half of the year

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
I actually don't think the skulk commander is as good as Cold Eyed Selkie. Islands are very common in Magic, especially in vintage and legacy but skulk means you can't really raise the creature's power and keep your unblockability.
There is no slippery slope fear here. There is only the lack of confidence that Wizards can balance cards such that they don't accidentally print a card far stronger than intended and a lack of confidence in their willingness to reprint indemand cards at a reasonable pace. Honestly so much this. I could care less if they want to print a bunch of flashy limited crossover cards, so long as they aren't overbudgeted and cause massive demand spikes in eternal formats. I don't like that these are legal in Legacy, however as long as they're kept to a power level of the caliber we have seen, their legality in the format won't be relevant.
However, as the quoted post states, I have some concern due to the fact we are talking about the same company that has recently printed Uro, Oko, Wrenn and Six, et al.
those cards could be previews for Kaldheim and soo players would not buy into the future scarcity that this secret lair has becomed...
They could have used them to preview card from Stixhaven, Innistrad #3, commander 2021 and even the later sets. But nope, better attract gullible whales with lootboxes on steroid.
It's a shame because a couple of the could be fun commanders.

But also... are we maybe overreacting a little bit? How often will these cards actually come up? It might annoy me if I sat down to play commander and someone had a commander deck with one of these cards, but realistically, how often will that even happen?
Mostly, I just hope WotC doesn't do more of stuff like this, but if they do this and nothing else... it's w/e
Also, just in case it needs to be said, don't let the hatred directed towards this prohibit your enjoyment of it if you like the cards. If you like it, you like it, have your fun. Hopefully, though, even if you like this particular incarnation, you can understand why this is an undesirable precedent.
One of the great things about Magic is it escapes the other brands out there, allowing but not forcing them to be used. Godzilla was done extremely tastefully, with very little negative comments outside of preference - if players didn't want the promos, they could use the regular variants and they certainly didn't need to be purchased in a limited window product only available in limited languages and regions. I think the reaction here is warranted because we saw what happened when it was muted - Wizards kept pushing the power level of buy-a-box promos to sell more boxes, until they went too far and printed Nexus of Fate which was so powerful it needed to get banned, and still hasn't been reprinted. Having to play a trademarked Walking Dead character to compete in Magic is crossing a line, and even if the reaction is a bit hyperbolic, it may be necessary to avoid this continuing with other brands.
But the problem of doing mechanically unique cards here is genuinely concerning. WotC has reassured us they would be willing to reprint these, but their record on reprints is spotty and even in an ideal world that will take time to organise. Negan's design is sickeningly close to his character so that is a home run.
And Michonne's two walkers are also pretty canon so thats cool too.
I guess there is a certain appeal to it being a real card... tho i dun really care how they do it.
Overall i like this product, not sure if i would buy it but i like it
