According to that source, we are going to be seeing mechanically unique (AKA not godzilla-style "re-skins") cards that are legal in eternal formats (AKA black-bordered), though the secret drop will be open for a full week so getting a copy if you want one shouldn't be the biggest problem (if it's worth the cost of $50).
Not sure how to feel about a tiny handful of mechanically unique cards being sold directly to us from Wizards for a bigger price than a commander deck. Anyone else have any thoughts?
Edit: Here is an article with one of the cards inside. Can't find the Entertainment Weekly article yet.
I have nothing nice to say about this product and the precedent it sets.
If you want the mechanically unique cards youre forced into supporting the secret lair model. That means a premium price and buying into the FOMO model due to its limited window.
They wont be able to reprinted anywhere else because theyre tied to a license. A license thats several years out of popular fandom. Pushing FOMO even further if you like what they do, or what they do is proven strong later.
They break immersion dramatically. Gonna be real cool to attack your jace with jeffrey dean morgan... what next? Shrek? The monopoly guy? Garfield? Its an erosion of brand.
If successful this sends all of the wrong messages regarding new product design, availability, and marketing.
This is a jump the shark moment. No one asked for this. This is not only blind but the genuine opposite of what the players keep asking for.
Utter trash and representative of the continued decline of the directionless wotc.

While I agree with basically everything you said it's always dissapointing when someone makes a coherent argument but ignores that part of their doomsaying is already possible. Richard Garfield, Ph.D.
It isn't an apocalyptic future in which we can attack the opponent with Garfield. It is a long standing present in which we can attack people with Garfield

Garfield the cat? Garfield and Odie? I mean we have cats and dog types already... mighty weird heh
Just like with the Buy a Box promo thing. Well they will never be good enough for constructed to piss people off it's just a bonus .
Now we have secret lair. Well they won't print Unique cards here that are playable?? Whelp here we go...

Another thing I realized if the mtg versions are in Commander legends it will be even more confusing why these didn’t get the Godzilla treatment and concurrent them in there
anyway the real problem here is for negan in particular for commander this is nexus of fate or/and Nalathni Dragon All over again you think they just learned from ending BAB exclusive promos

yeah but that's silver border nonsense that's only legal in casual circles, not eternal formats
Please, mill me. Mill my important cards. Mill my lands. Mill it all. Because I will still deal 20 damage before you can mill 45 cards most every time.
Wait, what? Is that card actually a legal Magic card?
I didn't feel great about that Godzilla-only buy-a-box card, but a least it did technically have an actual MTG identity.
If this is a real, tournament-legal Magic card, I actually find that pretty horrifying. I know people are quick to call something a "Jump the Shark" moment, but I've been playing Magic for almost 20 years and if there's ever been such a moment, it's this.

why couldn’t they just do the same thing they did for Zilortha, Strength Incarnate (it has a normal version) A future card/reprint for a upcoming set rather than just a strait up unique crossover card?
Wow... they are really crossing a line here... people always used altered cards, so crossover versions of cards are not a problem (as was mentioned above, Zilortha was already pushing that quite a bit, but still kind of acceptable).
But when doing pure crossover cards without a regular version anywhere, those HAVE to be silver bordered...
Why the **** they are not silver border? This is ****.

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
This could've been the perfect place to randomly drop cards from Commander Legends or Kaldheim, maybe make a Mathas with better lighting, but no we want money. The only hope left is that these cards are Global Series-level bad so no one would actually play outside the small but disappointed Walking Dead fandom.
This is honestly completely fine as long as the cards aren't powerful, and these definitely aren't. Given the power-level of recent buy-a-box exclusives as well as the obvious attempt to make sure these are bad, I don't think we have to worry about these black-border limited-availability cards any time soon.
The price point obviously sucks, but there are licensing fees to consider here.
I feel like Negan would make a cool commander though. I'm not a fan of Secret Lair's. I'm just saying as a card he would be a cool aristocrat commander.

Haste RU Draw 2 Cards, this creature deals 2 damage to each other creature you control. RW Choose Two - Target Creature gains First Strike, Lifelink, or Haste until end of turn. UW Choose One - Return Target Creature to the top of it's Owner's deck, or Creatures your Opponent controls can't attack this turn. This creature doesn't untap during your next untap step.

Here’s one for another, unfortunately the card is really cool, but realistically it can’t be reprinted since it’s tied to a license...

If cards like this keep coming along, we may need to create an "honorary reserved list".

they can somewhat be reprint but a function reprint
via the same trick they did with cards like Gaea's Cradle with Growing Rites of Itlimoc/Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun for example
but really even with this, it is still the worst mistake I have ever seen them make
these really should have been either silver-bordered or get the Godzilla treatment (two names name for promo but little name of the real card)

i did mean garfield the cat though.
The machine's hunger will never die down. So expect more in the future.
With that said, will definitely make a deal with the capitalist devil for some sweet ridiculous crossover cards down the road.
Abominations indeed. But my hypocritical hands are on my wallet at the ready for something that piques my interest.
