Can someone from WotC explain the decision to upshift a sideboard-use fifty cent uncommon to rare? This is insane.
If they're going to pull stuff like this, they better really lean into it. Make it a alt art boxtopper. Make it the exclusive prerelease card. Use its art on booster packs Post an article on the mothership going through the design for the card and how people have been asking for a reprint every year but you just couldn't find the right place. Upshift it to mythic "to keep limited balanced." Just totally rub our noses in it. We deserve it, for asking for you to reprint valuable cards.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
Ravenous Trap upshifted. These WotC buffoons have NO clue.
Two 25 cent rares. 12 to 16 dollars a pack. Legal theft.

STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.

Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
To be fair, the card did peak around $6 last year, so maybe they thought it needed a reprint. But they also just reprinted it in Mystery Booster, so, uh, I got nothing. Absolutely no excuse to promote it to rare, since they've never done something like that to Path to Exile or Fatal Push. Even worse because the card doesn't even feel rare.
Man, I feel bad for Card Kingdom for trying to hype up their previews.

Well now that I think about it, the Double Masters list was probably finalized last year when Phoenix and Hogaak decks were ruining the meta and Ravenous Trap was a $7 card.
But your point still stands, I don't know what makes them think that Ravenous Trap would be that expensive for an entire year. If the Modern meta was really that stagnant and degenerate for that long, then they would have much bigger problems.
And that still doesn't excuse the fact that, even if Ravenous Trap was still $7, leaving it an uncommon would be much better for pack sales than upshifting it to rare. Modern Masters 2013 went down in history as one of the best sets because it had so much value in the non-rare slots.

Anyone who says WotC upshifted Ravenous Trap for draft really needs to ask who in their right mind is spending $50-$60 for a draft.
It doesn't wash either. There are always terrible cards at common/uncommon for draft. Eg. Damping Sphere. There's no excuse at all to upshift this and it's ludicrous in a masters set.

I fondly remember that, I was selling uncommon sets for like €32 because it was chock full with ridiculous value! Even the common slot had a lot of gems.
You'd think leaving the trap at uncommon would have been a slight extra incentive to crack packs...

Oh absolutely. I was totally kidding in my post above when I said they should upshift it again to mythic to balance draft. Even if packs were $3 - this isn't even a graveyard themed set! There is absolutely no reason for it to be anything other than uncommon.

Uh... I think that you’re kind of fighting the exact opposite of your argument.
If this set WAS a graveyard-themed set, having decent graveyard hate at uncommon would make a decent amount of sense. As this is NOT a graveyard set, however, you don’t want 2-3 copies of this card randomly floating around in each draft pod and doing nothing. Kind of the same reason cards like one with nothing or moonlace were rare... they are too useless in draft to risk making them more common.
I personally agree that Hogaak is a big part of the reason why this card is the set at all, though.

ok to back up - I was jokingly saying it had to be upshifted because it would be too broken at a lower rarity. That was a joke. Even in a graveyard themed set, no.
As to your point about not wanting too many copies of this floating around draft if it is useless - uh, sure ok, but uncommon hosers are universal in magic. Not really trying to argue with you on this point; the card is appropriate at uncommon in literally any possible realistic set it could ever exist in and not appropriate as a rare ever. The end.
