Packs will be 6 dollars each, not 5 dollars each (about $2 more, not the $1 more than a draft pack according to the WotC spinmasters). For instance WM sells Draft Packs for $4.18 each. I would guess WM/Target/Box Stores will sell between $6.25 to $6.79 USD.
Set Booster Box (of 30 packs, not 36) will "MSRP" at $199.99 vs. the $144.00 of a Draft booster box. Of course we know you can get a Standard BB for on average shipped from about 90 to 100 USD. So Set Booster Box can probably be had for around 150 to 160 shipped.
Just my guesses but we will see if I am right or wrong.
The idea is a good one, I think the execution is wrong.
I'd guess the reason for 30 packs is to keep the same general MSRP as a normal Booster box, much like Mystery Booster did. MB did 24 packs for the $144, this is 30, so $5 is probably about right.
If they wanted too do this. I’d drop commons almost entirely from the pack sense bulk of chaff is tbere. 8 Cards

What would you charge a pack?
For what is listed I wouldn't pay over $4 like a Draft Booster for 8 cards and only one guaranteed rare. Needs to have at least 2 guaranteed rares.

I'd like to share your optimism, but can't. It should be as you say but I'm betting it won't.

and while yes the net worth of a collection is indeed spread over the entire collection not just a small portion of it, with each reprint that spread reduces further in value.
That's why I said that the reprint window is not that frequent, but it is regular enough that it keeps prices rising slowly rather the rising quickly. This is a card game, after all, not an investment vehicle. I understand people want some value for trading purposes, but I don't want Magic to become a way to put a down payment on a house. That's when prices are too high and limiting accessibility for new players.
so while on paper this pack idea sounds great, it sounds like its what we all want, in practice... well in practice i think there's too many products with too much value at the top end, and too much volatility even there, to be long term viable. buying into products like these set a dangerous precedent and send the company clear messages that its all okay, that we'll keep buying, but in reality eventually... we won't and then we'll sit there wondering what happened.
At this point, Wizards hasn't even tried, so we can debate all about theoretical scenarios. I don't think the player base as a whole is that closed-minded that they would stop buying. I believe that if you make the staple/chase cards accessible, more players will come into the game driving up the demand, and the prices of such cards will definitely be more than the pack price (so long as Wizards doesn't try to gouge the pack price, like this $16 Double Masters pack...)
I see on Amazon they are preselling Set Booster boxes (of 30 packs) for $126.50 shipped USD. Color me mildly impressed, I was expecting more as evidenced on my guesses above.

Put 100 boxes up for sale on the website and take bids for them. Anyone who bid more than one standard deviation above the mean gets a box at price = mean plus one standard deviation.

5-6 Dollars Maybe. Also you mean your not buying packs to draft? The argument that wizards makes draft sells packs. Because of that they design packs for draft.
These “play” packs be ***** for drafting because you wouldn’t ger enough engine cards or filler to play. So clearly folks who love drafting and clearlt are primary movers of packs would stick with there amazing 4 Dollar draft experience pack.
draft boosters boxes $121 but for a set boosters boxes $126 so only five dollars more than a regular draft booster box
You can usually get Draft Booster boxes sub $100 with free delivery buying online. I haven't paid over $96 shipped for a Draft Booster Box going back several years.
Realistically Set Boosters are probably 20 to 25 dollars more a box at 16% less packs per box. I can already see a box battle opening Draft vs. Set where the person opens MORE rares from the Draft box than the Set box. It will happen. How often remains to be seen.

Those prices include Amazon's preorder premium costs. That $5 margin will remain a $5 margin once those are knocked off.
Well, they are also up on Cardmarket (as preorders). Right now:
- Draft boosters start at €2.27 per pack, a very typical price (€81.72 per box, but boxes will be a bit cheaper).
- Set boosters are €4.98 per pack, so a whopping €149.4 per box.
Main conclusion right now: Don't buy these at these prices!
