I'll probably be in the minority here, but I actually like the borderless art version. I like seeing it actually look like a "Dark Confidant". It's nice to see someone whispering sweet evil plans into someone else's ear.
I am a minority speaker though when I say I just don't get this card. It's just not that great whenever I see it played. So maybe you draw 1 extra card (and lose life for it) before it dies to virtually anything. Just IMO, obviously it's a very heavily played card for a reason, i just don't see it

more mediocre alt art. they know people will buy it regardless because the card is strong so why put any effort into art quality at all.
great inclusion, and what you'd expect to see in this set.
i'm surprised they didn't reprint some hot hot garbage like underworld connections to offset it, as they seem to have done with every other decent reprint in this ultra premium product. of course its a mythic too, because we don't want too much (any) value in the rare slot, gotta keep em buying packs.
The subject's face is fairly dopey, the composition is weak, and the colors lack interest. I get the impression that given the weakness of the face, and the awkwardness of the composition that this was trimmed down from a much larger piece by someone with no formal training. Dollars to donuts that the original piece centered on the old man from a middling distance, with the confidant looming behind him to the side, not in focus (which would draw attention away from the stupid-looking face).
Of course I'm a Tolkien super-fan and the Grima Wormtongue speaking into the ear of King Theoden of Rohan vibe here is spot on. Maybe if enough people hate it I can pick up a playset on the "cheap".

I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.

It really does just come down to card advantage on a cheap body. You build your deck so that it very rarely hits you for more than 3 points of damage which is more than acceptable if it means you draw the cards you need to win. It can go several rounds of being out if your opponent doesn't have removal or deems it a lesser threat than another thing you've stuck on your board and is highly splashable at only 1 pip of B. It's true it doesn't go in every deck but that's true of a lot of cards.
Excellent include for DM but man have the showings so far been iffy. I'm personally staying away from this product and only buying singles because there a lot of jank around these nuggets of gold.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.

I've always disliked the Dark Confidant artwork that wasn't the Bob Maher, Jr. art. This box topper art is the first new Bob art I'm actually on board with. Orzhov is my favorite guild, so maybe that helps.

You are aware that this is the same artist as Gaea's Cradle (to name just one) right? I think the art is great.
I think they mean cropped down by someone with no formal training, not Mark Zug.
Personally, I’m glad to have more “inconsistent” art back in mtg. Reminds me of the old days where the art style was more varied & fun.

Bob should always be Bob Maher, replacing the art is not cool (if you do special art promo version "ok" , but not on a regular reprint).
