Maybe I play this in Golos? Its probably better than Jegantha. But otherwise it just doesn't cut the mustard. 7 mana is when you should be casting game winning spells not setup cards. And if you're cheating it in then why aren't you just cheating a game winner in? It's impressive. It's what Mythics should look like. But it's just not good enough. You probably don't want it in decks with less than 3 colors because the mana fixing doesn't work as hard there and the card draw is actively bad. in 4 and 5 color decks you have better options for card draw and mana. I can't see taking a turn off in the Ur-Dragon to cast this instead of a dragon.

I think the cards we want to compare this to are The Great Henge and Zendikar Resurgent. In the case of the Great Henge, it often comes down for four or five mana and taps for two, meaning it costs two mana or so total (average, sometimes it's free, sometimes costs more, but follow along). Later in the game, it taps for two and draws you cards when you cast creatures. I think Chromatic Orrery is clearly worse at the card draw, but better at the mana ramp since it taps for five. The two life and the counters provided by The Great Henge are cool but often incidental, like the fixing on Chromatic Orrery which is nice but not really that strong so late in the game. Overall, I'd say The Great Henge is a better card (by quite a bit) in any deck playing green, but in decks without green, maybe Chromatic Orrery fills a similar role. Both are mid to late game ramp that you can slot into your curve efficiently and provide the opportunity for card draw.
Another comparison is Zendikar Resurgent. That card is also seven mana, but it makes you zero mana the turn it comes down, meaning you always pay "full price" as opposed to Chromatic Lantern, which can discount its cost by up to five. After the turn you play it, Zendikar Resurgent is usually better at both ramp and draw. I doubt anyone is trying to cut Zendikar Resurgent for Chromatic Orrery. But sometimes it feels like it's impossible to cast Zendikar Resurgent because you essentially take a whole turn off to do so. Orrery can slot into a mid-game turn while only taking up two mana, and it can be an awesome turn, especially if your commander costs five and it's one you want to play mid to late game. And the ramp on Orrery is close to Zendikar Resurgent in the mid game. If you have six lands, Zendikar Resurgent only gives you one more mana than Chromatic Orrery, and none of the fixing.
My point here isn't than Chromatic Orrery is better than either of those cards in EDH. It's not. But my point is it kind of comes close, and can go in non-green decks, which means I think it has a role in the format. Jimmy and Josh were too dismissive of this card (as well as erroneously saying you can copy its ability with Twonos lol).
Another interesting comparison would be to Caged Sun. Big mana ramp spells see play, and fill an important role. And no, just because it's a mid to late game card doesn't make it "not ramp." It's definitely *still* ramp. In many of my commander decks, the ramp package itself has a mana curve. There are lots of one and two drop ramp spells, but also four, five, six, seven mana ramp spells at the top end.
I think the deck that will love this above all others is Sen Triplets. Sen Triplets already struggles with having mana of the correct color to cast spells from an off color opponent. This fixes that problem and allows all their mana to be used on Enemy cards.

Agreed, that’s why I disassembled my Sen Triplets deck years ago
(well, that and Red being better for that kind of deck than White).
and there are more tricks than this to get it out sooner
plus there's ridiculous ramp that can get it out if I do it right I can T1 it in my kozilek deck
Cheating it out is not a justification of this card. Why would I cheat this out when I could just cheat Blightsteel out?
1 in 99 odds of hitting the particually cards without tutors also you may not have it
The point is complaint Is cmc and there are countless ways around and you can ramp to it quick when it comes to commander but even with this explanations people still trash cards despite how good they are apparently
Wow I didn't know people were this bad at card comparisons and reading comprehension. That or, they are using bad faith arguments for some reason to downplay this new card.

Bad faith? Bad at reading comprehension?
I'm checking in to see if anyone still thinks this is a must-have for all decks, even monocolor. I continue to believe that no, it is not, not even close.
(I do think Josh and Jimmy were too dismissive of it on Command Zone, though I still generally agree with their assessment of it. There is a spot for incredibly expensive mana rocks that can ramp you into a bigger payoff, that also happen to combo with an obscure Shards of Alara card. That spot is not "staple.")

Kethis, the Hidden Hand will like this,
but probably not as much as Sliver Overlord will...
And that was just the stuff listed by the EDH reddit.
filigree sages will turn this into a basalt monolith
if your complaining about the 7 mana look at these

Not sure if I would put this in the Jeleva, Nephalia’s Scourge deck that it morphed into.
