Nikara, Lair Scavenger 2B
Legendary Creature- Human Cleric
Partner with Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel
Menace
Whenever another creature you control leaves the battlefield, if it had one or more counters on it, you draw a card and you lose 1 life.

Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel 2GW
Legendary Creature- Hyena Beast
Partner with Nikara, Lair Scavenger
Vigilance
When Yannik, Scavenging Sentinel enters the battlefield, exile another creature you control until Yannik leaves the battlefield. When you do, distribute X +1/+1 counters among any number of target creatures, where X is the exiled creature's power
3/3
Sharing (+1/+1 counters) is caring. Also, meet Magic's 5th Hyena, 4th if you don't count Laughing Hyena.
So... this partner pair gets a bunch of mileage from counters, sac outlets, and etb effects all at once. Lots of different ways to build around this. Consider me impressed.
Those two are very strong, probably the strongest amongst the Partners cycle along witht the UWR one, but they are also a very weird duo. Their CMCs imply you should curve them both so Nikara can "ride" Yannik but that means you won't be get Nikara's triggers once whatever you put counters on dies. Meanwhile, the fact Nikara says "another" means that putting Yannik's counters on her is a bad idea.
That said, they have amazing build-around potential. You can build them WBG blink, you can build them high Power matters, you can build them go-wide counters to get the most potential off Nikara... there are a lot of viable options here, and almost all of them seem strong. Legendary Hyena is a cool first, and more Legendary Clerics are always welcome. Total homerun IMO.
So, in theory, Yannick can make your army infinitely large if you make an exile loop with any two of Changeling Hero, Changeling Titan, Angel of Serenity, etc, right? Anything else on the field would see the loop and get buffed each time Yannick exiled one.
Jokes aside though, both are great and I didn't know I wanted a Hyena commander before.
Thanks, WotC!
I'm just curious - what is the sarcasm/joke here, and what is the implied fanservice?
Sorry, messed that one up quite badly. Nikara is the actual fanservice. No sarcasm. The joke was supposed to be that my first line strongly indicated how much I like the design and depiction of Nikara (which I really do), only to flip it on its head and make it seem like I was praising the animal as fanservice. It tanked, I'm sorry, thanks for asking.
I really like both cards and I do actually find hyenas pretty cool.
I dig them. They can be used separately, are better together, and are somewhat unique. The math comes down to how many counters Yannik is going to give and how many triggers Nikara gets. Nikara triggering off more than just dying is a huge help, and of course plays into Yannik's tucking and counter gifts.
I don't know how strong they are, but I think they're worth trying to find a home for.
i love the art, and the more i think about it the more i like what they do. there are tons of ways to interact with +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters in these colors so i see it as a pretty decent dig for combo engine. plus pink hair.
i wish white wasn't part of the pair, but i'm not a fan of 3 color partners/decks in general so that's why
Yeah I think you’re just way off on whatever fan service you’re referring to. No one asked for that haha
Oh, so people find Nikara boring or even ugly? Okay, I didn't expect that. In that case, yeah, no fanservice here, unless your taste overlaps with mine.
Thanks for clearing that up. Sorry for my pointless posts, then.
What is it about her looks, though, that turns people off? I know it's all personal preference, but is it the punk look? To me, many iterations of that general kind of look are also unappealing. This one though? Nope, totally in the "easy-on-the-eyes" category, which I find refreshing and rather unusual for the past years of major entertainment products.
Its the kind of hair that lumps you in a group, people will judge you for that hair and looks, like it or not.
The **** outfit doesnt help the case either.
WotC promoted that kind of "style" since Battlebonds all for "representation" check mark stickers, and putting that kind of references in a fantasy game hurts the immersion by putting too much current time references into the game (its a trigger).
----
Yea, its pretty much the "new" Harley Quinn style, and that movie tanked pretty hard too (its just too much on the horrendously annoying spectrum).
----
Regardless of that, characters like that will be polarizing.

This art should hardly be polarizing.
If its doing that in people id also ask if they find people depicted as a different skin tone polarizing, we should have diversity in how humanoids are depicted. Its healthy, its normal, people exist. If someone finds this art polarizing it may be time to step back from the game for awhile and examine the self.
Also because the cat has her staff i wonder if the implication is the cat ate her anyway
Now, can we move on and talk about what the cards do?
I see this build as easily running heliod combos - finks/ballista.
Food chain/eternal scourge is probably a shoe in too.
Couple of blood artist effects
Pretty much any mazirek combo
I think fiend hunter and faceless butcher start a loop with the cat too right? Convoluted as hell though

Clearly its a trigger for you. Want to get anything off your chest?

Birds of Prey? It's got the fourth-highest box office take of the year, with no Chinese market to sell to. It did $200 million on a budget half of that, so it did fine. It likely would have hit a quarter of a billion if this wasn't the worst year ever and I doubt the studio considers it a disaster, nor does it appear audiences found it just too much on the horrendously annoying spectrum. It has 78% on RT, so audiences seemed to take to it.

I like that hairdo, while I do see it in a similar category as Exclusion Mage's, whose hairstyle just ruins the entire artwork for me. Yes, I'll gladly interact with people who wear their hair like that and yes, I'm happy for everyone who does like that kind of look. There's literally thousands of artworks in this game and a lot of them I really like. Still I can't always help but mention it when there's a new addition to the list of artwork that I like in this game.
Also, is it exclusively accepted to talk about the cards' gameplay here? I believe a great part of this game's appeal comes from its illustraions, too, and thus assumed it was okay to comment on that aspect also.

And the fact the hyena does ‘t rid of whatever creature you exiled forever and adding counters based on power is incredible

Elspeth and Jhoira rock my world.
If they would allow the Hyena to target opponents creautres, that would make it really great.
Otherwise they barely deliver, almost any commander in that colors is better.

Huh? Okay, now I'm confused, very confused. Is the term 'fanservice' not a sort of euphemism for deliberately salacious depiction of characters..?
...I might have to change my username...

Its more of something just to please fans. I wouldnt lump this art under fan service any more than any other card depicting a human

Great catch, guess that Hyena didn't see her a partner after all.

The staff is a rattle, she gives it to the hyena while she pilfers so she has both hands free and her lookout has a signal.
