Wizards: [Wizards raising the prices] Detractors: "That is really greed of you wizards, can you tone down the greed?" Defenders: "nOt EvErY pRoDuCt Is MeAnT fOr YoU."
Lets address these point by point.
1: if WOTC is in the singles market, they’re doing it in the most round about, inefficient way possible. Another thing, WOTC has been selling singles for years, with things like duel decks and From the Vault, etc.
If they are in the singles market they better start printing 25 years worth of product much more aggressively.
2: WOTC is not beholden to anyone to keep their product lines limited just so you can afford every single one. I have many hobbies that have lots of offerings I cannot afford. I just simply buy the things I like most. If you, or anyone, feels need to have to own every single product, you all have issues and need professional help. People who feel “burned” by WOTC need to assess their priorities. No one is entitled to everything they want.
3: Cannot argue for the most part however, companies often create boutique products for their higher end clientele. But hey, NOT ALL PRODUCTS ARE FOR ALL PLAYERS!
Just buy the cards you think you’ll use or can afford.
Most people don’t get to drive the car they want, or live in the house they want, or own every Magic card in existence.
All the complaints are first world problems, not feeling any empathy.

That depends entirely upon how you define “keep[ing] pace with the game.” Compulsion is a legitimate mental issue, so if you define that phrase to mean “own every single product Wizards puts out, regardless of format relevance,” and you otherwise lack the means to do so, then the answer might surprisingly be yes. If you define it otherwise, however, you’ve pretty much defeated your own point: it’s both perfectly sane and reasonable to spend money on the individual products you desire most.
The so-called “defenders” that you’re parodying, by the way - people like myself - few of us, through the discourse I’ve witnessed here, are WotC apologists. We’ve merely pointed out time again that your “detractors” are arguing mostly out of principal, as I’ve yet to see a single one of them actually claim a desire to own one or more SL drops; people have come here, by and large, to say “no thanks, I pass” and move on. Market saturation and wallet fatigue are not the same thing, so please let us know when you actually do own everything and we can go from there.
Why does everyone keep saying this

Where were you guys when Therese Nielson was getting shat on? Did anyone of you say her art’s not for everyone? Or did you at least support her and tell people to just ignore her art or any of that? Or that she was entitled to her opinion? I didnt see any of you support her right to her opinion in the discussions of it. None of you had the sentiment of “its not for everyone” but how come you do now?
did any of you tell that girl that cried about garruk beat up liliana that this games isnt for everyone? Or that that card isnt for everyone?
what about when ppl start crying about not being included? Did you tell them that the game is not for everyone?
You see the very clear bias here. This game had none of that and many of you cried about it not being as inclusive enough years back. You cried about too many white males and the women were “objectified” etc etc well why didnt you realize then that this game wasnt for you? Or that you didnt have to buy the product? No, you kept complaining pushing and pushing until finally the game changed to include you.
But now that you’ve gotten your way you have the verve to tell players who have played for 15+ years that the product isnt for everyone, how can say with a straight face “this isnt for everyone” when others have complaints.
Well im here to tell you we’re going to keep complaining and we are all going to keep seeing the game decline just as it did last year as they pushed all sorts of crap out their doors and continued to show us incompetency of the highest order as well as shallow and patronizing inclusivity that really made you all froth at the mouth.

Hello, false equivalence.
You know, I’m old enough now to remember back when California had smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants. Maybe not a lot of people know this, depending on where you live or how often you travel, but there are still places like that in the US. I lived in North Carolina only a decade or so ago when they finally advanced tobacco legislation into the 21st century, and it greatly disgruntled my military companions (who, as a whole, are generally prone to tobacco addiction). Their predominant line of reasoning? ”If you don’t like my smoke, go somewhere else.” The thing about toxic behavior is that it’s not incumbent upon everyone else to avoid it in a public space, that burden rests squarely on the shoulders of the offender.

Hey, I’m not here to pass judgment on actual collectors. But as someone already pointed out, if your expectation going into that practice is a low barrier to entry or even modest prices, you really may want to adjust your perspective. Whatever the prices used to be, collecting has always been an exorbitant venture.
player A: dislikes liberal views and viewpoints thus believes anything that can be seen as virtue signaling is an attempt to pander and gets very annoyed.
Player B: says “this product isnt for you”
on the other side
Player A: dislikes conservatives views and viewpoints thus believes anyone associated with those views are mean or hateful and shouldnt be associated with the game.
Player B: Says “that artists product isnt for you”
Or how about
Player A: dislikes the patronizing direction the game has taken thus complains about it
Player B: says “this game isnt for everyone.”
on the flipside
Player A: is of a minority group and whines about no representation
Player B: says “this game isnt for everyone”
now please, where is false equivalence? Its very true that you guys only defend your political viewpoints and are only inclusive to those who you deem worthy. Thats all im saying.
God forbid we say
“I hope theres a secret lair with male characters only”
Or we are incels, or sexists or whatever. Its just severely hypocritical of you all to do that.

Real people are harmed by racism, sexism, and every other form of bigotry. Doesn’t matter what your political outlook is, those things have no place in society. Even if people left Magic because WotC chose to continue promoting toxicity, which is their right to do so as a capitalist entity, damage would still be done.
Here, in this thread, we’re talking about the price of cardboard.

A low barrier simply means more people can enjoy the same content. A higher barrier only creates exclusivity. Chronicles is what most sets should strive to be.
You know, at a certain point people have to accept the reality that they may not have the means to pierce that barrier. Wanting a thing, or desiring entry into a particular hobby, doesn’t entitle you to it by mere virtue of said want. I want a complete Tau army, assembled and professionally painted, but I don’t have $4k to burn at the moment.

Is it bold to want all players to have access to the same content for an affordable price?

Honestly, yes. Magic is a luxury, but that really shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point. I don’t like paying $30 for a single mythic, much less a whole play set just to participate in standard, so I don’t. I find that to be a much more practical - and less stressful - solution than expecting WotC to change practices that have been going on for 25+ years. I hate to be glib, but maybe the solution for you is to find another hobby.

All games are luxuries. But its up to the makers on how they wish to a price game and keep up its avability. As long as things like Mystery Boosters and Jump Start drive down prices and are affordable to the average consumer, the game is in good shape. The only ones who disagree are those wish to flip products. If they reprinted my reserved list cards, I couldn't be happier, as that means new people can enjoy the same content as I have.
God forbid we say
“I hope theres a secret lair with male characters only”
Or we are incels, or sexists or whatever. Its just severely hypocritical of you all to do that.
I think you ended up getting yourself very triggered here, man. This is a company trying to sell a product by putting a little political seasoning on the product. There might not be an international man's day or whatever, but if they do a Secret Lair for Christmas would you be really upset if you didn't celebrate it? If you were black, would you be offended that they didn't release a "Time Traveling Black Guys" collection on Feb. 29, featuring five different Teferis? Everything is gonna be ok. People will be crazy for one reason or another until the end of time, but everything is going to be ok. Especially if the biggest problem you've got is that they celebrate Whamen's Day. Relax, don't buy the product if you're offended, and play some MTG or something.
I agree that the game in general is more expensive than I’d like. Would love to see an end to the Reserved list.
The price of entry, the cost of maintaining in Standard, and being a high level collector are all different things. The Secret Lair cards are not new cards, necessary for competing in a format. You don’t even need these particular printings to own “every card”. These are for people who like to pimp decks, or collect alternate versions(or whatever). Secret Lair, from a rarity and price point perspective, are not much different than the Masterpieces. Then there’s things like Judge Promos. Magic has always had high end, collectable pieces. But none of these cards are necessary to participate in the game. This is the nature of collectables.
There’s a huge difference between having every card you need to build the decks you want to play and feeling you need a copy of every card ever printed.
I want a “Blue” Hurricane, but I’m pretty sure my wife would murder me if I even thought about buying one. I suppose I’ll just have to deal.
WOTC making some specialty products isn’t them “pricing people out of the game”
I like this product because it is making the neckbeards cry as evidenced in this thread. I probably won't buy it but I think they should do more stuff like this anyway.

Playing with proxied cards at sanctioned events is good, actually.
I mean, the government can’t stop you from saying what you want, but that doesn’t always mean you should. Some people are offended by Jews; I don’t accept or acknowledge their opinions. Not much room for subjectivity there.
I agree that what you witnessed was beyond the pale. As someone accustomed to preaching to 14-year-olds that “two wrongs don’t make a right,” I’d expect any sane adult - as you put it - to know better. You simply don’t mistreat an entire class of people because of one bad experience. Frankly I’m surprised you had the wherewithal or dexterity to snap pics, what with both hands clutching your pearls in moral outrage.
What you doing is creating the logical fallacy of False Equivalency. What do any of the things you’ve accused people of supporting or not supporting( without any evidence ) have to do with the discussion at hand. For me personally, this is not a political issue. WOTC printing some cards commemorating International Women’s Day and donating some of the proceeds to the Girl Scouts doesn’t really smack me as some “left wing agenda”. WOTC making a small specialty product for this event has little to no bearing on the game at large.
And those of us that are not against this particular action that WOTC has taken probably have a wide range of opinions on the various other topics you brought up. Me personally, I’ve voiced my opinions openly about them. As have many others that are long time regulars on this site. But none of those things are germane to this “issue”, that is really non-existant, except in the minds of people who seem to be making it one. Just because a cause has women at the center of it doesn’t necessarily make it something from the “regressive left”.

Blue lives don't matter in the slightest.
