What happened next was a mischievous idea. While trying to think of things that were host or augment-like, I realized we had a brand-new mechanic coming up in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths that fit the bill, something called mutate. Unsanctioned was coming out before Ikoria, but what if I let it care about mutate? That way, when Ikoria came out, there'd be a new series of cards that you could use in the deck. And it would be a fun tease of a future mechanic, something we hadn't done before. So, I figured out who all the people were that I had to ask permission of to do this, and I asked them. All of them said yes. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical that would happen, but was very excited when it did. So, what exactly does mutate do? Patience. Ikoria previews will start soon enough.
Now we know it was a tease for Ikoria so what will it do Ikoria all we know is involves something called “key-word counters”
Atleast we got a commander for mutate cards in Ikoria now (even though it’s silver bordered)

*Tarmogoyf teasing tribal and planeswalkers cries in the corner*
I mean if you're going to be nitpicky about it, planeswalkers are a card type and not a mechanic. Plus, those didn't exist when Tarmogoyf was made, unlike mutate being a thing when Unsanctioned was being made.

No that's his point. The originalTarmogoyf was printed the set before those became a thing in magic, thus spoiling they would be a thing (they were referenced in the reminder text of the card).
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
My guess is a sorcery speed Ability that will make a creature gain a choice of certain keyword, or permanent stat change. The choices differ from creature to creature.
