Not as good as Gary. Easier to set up this effect and get it off early but it's just not as powerful as draining. Not bad though. Compare to Inspiring Cleric— less power, but potentially gains you a lot of life.
And even then you really only want this if you get tremendous amounts of life that wins you the game against burn.
If you ever want to play a card like this, just run Kitchen Finks and friends, this card is just "bad".
Nylea's Disciple was a decent "filler" for limited. A 2/2 body is much worse and this is kinda showing that they pump cards up in the rarity for no reason at all (this is a terrible uncommon).
If this would have Escape it would be a contender, but like this, its utter trash ...

I'll run Kitchen Finks in Standard and Pioneer, sure. There are more formats than just Modern. This card will see play.
I've seen Nylea's Disciple very occasionally in Modern Green Devotion deck sideboards. I'd rather the life gain cost 3 mana than 4 mana, even if the body now gets Grim Lavamancered and trades with Modern Burn's creatures instead of surviving against most of them. Easy swap for those decks.

Agreed. As a Modern Green Devotion player; the speed of the life-gain is as important as the body (as we generally want to go over the top of the opponent quietly anyways). I’m ok with it coming down, gaining 5+ life and then soaking up a Lavamancer trigger...it’s effectively 2-3 “cards” for burn.
There is an argument for just playing Kitchen Finks; but this often will gain 6+ life immediately (which is everything in burn matchups).
I’m not a pioneer player; but i follow it...and i can imagine it will see definite play if Green Devotion is still a thing in Pioneer (and/or if burn or Aggro is/are a factor in the meta)..
