Not surprising. Oko has successively gotten the banhammer in all the most recent cardset formats alongside Once Upon a Time. At this point, I wouldn't be shocked if it got banned in modern, though that probably(?) won't happen. Nexus of Fate, meanwhile, is just a pain in the ass.
I don't think Oko will get banned in Modern (and I'm speaking as a Modern player). He's too vulnerable to immediate hard removal like Assassin's Trophy and Abrupt Decay (he makes a Food token immediately quite often), the counterspells and targeted discard in Modern nab him quickly and harshly enough (heck, Mystical Dispute has risen in maindecks), the aggro and combo decks outrace him too often (yes, he's had a shockingly hard time beating Burn/RDW consistently), and the ramp decks go over the top of him too often (Oblivion Stone is a nasty piece of work, Scapeshift deals 36 damage with Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and a bevy of Mountains). Oko takes over games pretty hard within 2 or more turns, though, and he's one of the best alternate win cons in Modern. He's powerful enough for Modern--but Modern is powerful enough for him.

Perhaps I am missing something here, but the cards you mention are also legal in Pioneer so why were Pioneer decks having such a difficult time against this particular planeswalker? Trying to use Thoughtseize and Negate were not good enough against other decks? Caveat: I have not played a game of MtG in about a year so there may be nuances I am missing.

Lightning Bolt and Inquisitions are huge reasons why. Also modern is significantly faster than pioneer. Most modern decks don't care about Oko. The only deck that plays it is Urza and that deck doesn't even need to.

mostly for food tokens so urza can make berry pie out of them.

Certain decks do have an easy answer but others, like ur emerge, mono white aggro, etc. Don't have the urgency to race it or have any good removal against it. This would just polarize the format.
As someone who plays oko in pioneer I'm honestly happy to see it banned even though my deck is the only one in our meta playing it. Was kind of sick of turn one goose turn two oko.
I can see emrakul and aetherfulix is still alive I see it will be a matter of time though that either one will get banned
And therein lies the problem. If the cards from RTR forward get banned in Pioneer, the same as those in Modern, then what's the point of Pioneer?
They should've thought about this a lot smarter. It's just causing a cluster**** of problems. Eitehr that or the player base doesn't know how to adapt or adjust accordingly.

Yeah Oko is not really ban worthy in Modern. There are more cards to deal with him and Modern is a much faster format. He is not a bad card - by any stretch of the imagination - he is just not oppressive in Modern.

Thank you for the responses. I am just starting to try and slowly work my back into playing on a regular basis--taking a 33% pay cut because your employer decides to downsize *sucks*. I almost had a complete play set of Standard back when I had to stop just before RNA got released, and I had almost complete sets going back to M2015, so I have just about everything I would need for Pioneer. In the last month or so I have managed to get a box of RNA, WAR, M20, and ELD--hooray for the part-time job--so now I just need to fill some missing card slots and I will have the tools for Standard again, as well as Pioneer. After that, I would need to polish off the rust and see how it goes.

What is the different between Modern and Pioneer if the same broken cards are banned in both? Well, there are more than 30 sets that Modern has access to that Pioneer does not. Also, Pioneer does not allow Fetches. Additionally, there is a huge disparity between the availability of cards printed in Pioneer-era sets compared to Modern-only sets.
So the Pioneer is way more accessible and affordable, the mana base is weaker (making 3 color decks harder to pull off) and the amount of legal cards is way smaller.

Why? Neither has really become a powerhouse in the format. Emrakul? I play at two different stores in town, one on Monday and one on Thursday, and across ~ 40 players I haven't seen either card, yet.

Banned
RUNIN: Norse mythology set (awaiting further playtesting)
FATE of ALARA: Multicolour factions (currently on hiatus)
Contibutor to the Pyrulea community set
I'm here to tell you that all your set mechanics are bad

re: new Emrakul and Aetherworks Marvel...one presumes that Repudiate // Replicate, Tale's End, Disallow, or possibly Summary Dismissal would be useful. If you were weird you could even use Ceremonious Rejection but that build would proably fail miserably against some sort of mono-red aggro deck. *sigh* I forgot how complex trying to prepare can be.
