I get it’s rarity but someone is gonna pull this as their prerelease promo and feel REAL BAD.
It could be a lot worse. I would rather pull what amounts to a very good removal spell with potential upside than most of the promos I have pulled. It beats a lot of the rares in the ser

It beats a lot of rares in a lot of sets. It's almost shriekmaw good and that saw a fair amount of constructed play during it's standard.
So at worst this is a situational Doom blade that gains you 3 life - Doom Blade has been a common and an uncommon, never a rare.
At best this allows you to grant another knight deathtouch and lifelink (great if that knight has strong p/t to survive the attack and gain you more than 3 life), and leaves you with an extra aggressive creature on the board.
I still don't think this should be a rare, but maybe they chose that due to "complexity"? Or they realized in limited it's crazy stupid.
At the very least it could of had first strike for flavor purposes (IT'S A LANCER!)
This thing literally says "destroy target creature. You gain 3 life." As is, it's stats are good for the tribe and good beats are always welcome.
I think you mean "destroy target ATTACKING creature" ... not quite as strong.
Target attacking or BLOCKING creature in knight tribal. Makes it noticeably stronger; just like the tricks with Dire Fleet Poisoner enabling a smaller pirate to get in a kill on the attack when it otherwise wouldn't.
This feels perfectly well positioned at rare to me. Flash is not particularly common in black, and the creature is a 2 drop that is all upside and very aggressive.
Let's also not forget that knights traditionally have a lot of first strikers which play really well with this and I think you have at least a standard all star if not something for a black aggro/Drain deck in modern

I think the idea is that many knights already have first strike, so that puts you up a card. If this guy had first strike and could get deathtouch they'd probably make it a mythic. Having played against many Death Baron + first strike shenanigans I can tell you it's ridiculously strong in the red zone.
The fact that this gains life is what pushes it to the rarity it is IMO.
Granted, it’s also an all upside 3 power black creature, so it is already a bit undercosted body as is. Being able to “trade” with a trampling behemoth, most likely a finisher, is super powerful.
The fact it can target itself is awesome for standard and edh knight tribal
And look at that flavor text
And there’s the name of mtg version of the holy grail (for those who haven’t read the ebook)

Its either a good 2drop + combat trick or removal w/ lifegain. And its in a relevant tribe ! Good package.

The targeted Knight could still ping a targeted Pro-Black creature and would die in that turn.

Death Baron + Stillmoon Cavalier always trades up. It's brutal.

I really like the design of this card.
