Torbran, Thane of Red Fell 1RRR
Legendary Creature— Dwarf Noble
If a red source you control would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls, it deals that much damage plus 2 instead.
2/4
Note that it says red source, so he's technically a 4/4.
The fact that it's a 2/4 is going to cause some serious miscalculations at prerelease, your opponent is going to block with an X/3 not realizing that the creature will die due to the +2 damage. If your opponent doesn't bother to read the card I don't believe that you are required to remind your opponent about the effect until damage is assigned. Going to be lots of feel bads at prerelease lol.
Sure, there is a chance of spending $4 on a booster and getting the Mythic Rare $30 super card. There is also a chance of surviving putting your tongue in a light socket.
Weird that this isn't a 4/4 with 'another red source' since that's usually how they deal with team buff effects.
But there it is. More dwarves in red. Cool.
If it said "another red source" then he'd never deal more damage with buffs - i.e. if he IS a 4/4, and you give this guy a buff like +2/+0, he'll only deal 6, instead of 8. He's actually better with the current templating.

It's plus 2 though, not double damage, so he doesn't synergize with power buffs anyway.

I don't see how buffs factor in here, since he doesn't double damage. If you give this guy +2/+0, he'll have 4 power and increase his damage to 6.
From my point of view a card like arc lightning will deal 9 damage in total, if you chose three different targets with it.
True or false?! I love that dwarv.
I don't think Cavalcade of Calamity decks could ever get a better curve topper, each dork that triggers it nets you a free Bolt(tm) to the face. This is a LOTR-caliber Dwarf right there.

If your pre-releases are not going to let your opponent go back on this misunderstanding once, then they are not enforcing the fact that it is casual REL. Typically you get one freebie if you can state your case enough and it is easy to go back a few steps based on known information, then the judge/rules advisor should keep note in case they try to do it again. At that point it can be dealt with accordingly (probably lying to an official if they said they didn't know after you explained it once).
Your opponent (and even you) can read a card and not parse it properly, especially ones where there are more than a couple lines of text. It is even worse for people who have played the game longer because they are used to seeing things templated one way for a while and just assume it works like older cards. Everyone is going to be new to these things at some point and will miss it, don't be a rules lawyer at a pre-release.
You may not be required to tell them, but it also doesn't take much to say "are you sure you want to block like that?" to give them a chance to re-assess the field without flat out telling them their error. I would rather someone remember me for explaining something kindly that might not be obvious and have them seek me out with more questions versus win an extra booster pack and not see them at the store again because Magic IS hard.
Does this make Fiery Confluence do 8 or 12 damage when you select the second mode three times?
Each mode is a separate instance, so each mode will get a +2 buff.
you answer, albeit right, seems a bit misleading.
if the player chooses to all 3 modes to be "2 damage to opponent"
the total damage is 8 damage to opponent.
if you choose
"2 damage to player"
"2 damage to player"
"1 damage to dudes"
it will hit player for 6 damage and dudes for 3 damage.
I think NerdSoda was saying that each mode gets the buff, which means that if you make all three choices be "2 damage to each opponent", you will do in fact 12 damage, as the replacement effect will occur once for each instance of the damage effect.

How does he work with creatures with trample? Such as Ilharg, the Raze-Boar
I don't see how the damage numbers should be assigned: do you consider the improved damage figures to determine the lethal damages and figure out the trample damages?

No, you have to assign lethal damage and then when its dealt it gets the bonus so with trample you will typically overkill by two. On the bright side if you trample over at all the trampled damage also gets buffed.
