Scorching Dragonfire deals 3 damage to target creature or planeswalker. If that creature or planeswalker would die this turn, exile it instead. As the blaze raced towards her, Syr Ameril closed her eyes and pictured Castle Ardenvale so her last thoughts would be of home.
Unfortunately, it can't target players, which is a not insignificant downside.
Quite contrary, that is a very significant downside. The decks playing Lightning Strike right now (mostly RDW) are very interested in pointing the damage to the face. I doubt this will see more play than Lava Coil for pure creature removal.
People are overlooking the fact this is an instant. You can't Lava Coil a creature in response to them attacking.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:

You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

Only dealing 3, and just to a body, isn’t very good. The exile part is going to be irrelevant more times than the instant speed is going to be relevant.
I will say this, though. If an equipment.dec becomes prevalent, then you’ll probably play this andLava Coil. The only way this is good is if there are enough good equip targets with Toughness < 3, because this would allow a time psuedo-timewalk and permanent form of removal. It’s niche.

Edit: Ahh, can't hit players. I was comparing it to Incinerate in my brain.
