U, Sacrifice an Island: Lochmere Serpent can't be blocked this turn. B, Sacrifice a Swamp: You gain 1 life and draw a card.
UB: Exile five target cards from an opponent's graveyard. Return Lochmere Serpent from your graveyard to your hand. Activate this ability
only any time you could cast a sorcery.
I hate sacrificing lands but a six mana 7/7 flash in UB is pretty good. That's Cloudthresher stats. The additional abilities are just icing on the cake.
How does the last ability exactly work? Can it be activated when the opponent has less than 5 cards in yard or not?
It's a cost, so I'm pretty sure the answer is no. Like the untap symbol. You can't pay a sacrifice cost if you have nothing to have sacrifice, etc.
It's not a cost. If it was, it would be "UB, exile five cards from an opponent's yard: effect".
You DO however have to have 5 targets. Which means at least 1 of the 5 targets still has to be in the graveyard when the ability goes to resolve, or it will fizzle.
I enjoy the art and design of this card, just a little sad it's not legendary. I mean, if a random frog monster, The Gitrog Monster, can be legendary, then why isn't Magic's Nessie a legend too?

Not everything in a set can be Legendary, and that's especially a thing when you have a set like this with so many cards that could be legends flavourfully.

I know not everything can be, or should be, legendary when designing a set. That's why Gitrog always bothered me. Now seeing that WotC decided to include a Loch Ness inspired card, I wondered why they didn't add it as a random legendary in the same vein as Gitrog. It is an actual trope to use, and is much more resonant than a legendary beast that many either don't remember or never heard of (Questing Beast) or like the random uncommon legendary mill knight. That is why I'm sad it isn't legendary.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
The stats are impressive for UB, a Limited bomb for sure but I'm quite doubtful of its potential as a control finisher, even though PW's don't have Flash, I'd much rather pay 6 mana for Lili or Affordable Ugin than this.

It's certainly not a terrible card, it's got a lot of upsides. And yet, I'm not sure what deck wants it. Maybe a mill strategy since its recursion requires your opponents to have moderately full graveyards?

Oh, right. Misread it. But it says 'five target' not 'up to five' or 'may', so it needs to have valid targets or it will fizzle.
