I looked at the product descriptions for each of the sets released in 2020, and Theros Beyond Death has the usual display of 6 Planeswalker decks, 2 kinds, 3 copies each.
Core 2021 product description says that the Planeswalker Deck displays come with 10 decks, 2 kinds, 5 copies each, instead of 5 kinds, 2 copies each, like in the Core 2019 and Core 2020 Planeswalker Deck displays. https://wpn.wizards.com/en/products/core-set-2021
Are Planeswalker Decks being discontinued, replaced with a new product, or the information on the WPN site is just wrong?
I'm assuming brawl decks will replace planeswalker decks except for the core set where commander comes out soon and rotation hits. Core is also more newbie friendly.
They were never a huge hit, they only sold when there were valuable cards in them. For exemple in Rivals of Ixalan the Angrath deck sold more than the one with Vraska (on the first months)(and i know 2 stores that just opened the Vraska decks for the 2 boosters).
With core 2020 they removed one of the booster and putted multiples of great uncommons but no good rares from the set (stores still have plent of stock) and to be truth they never sold that good (better than the intro packs from gatewatch era tho).
IMO it would be a better business desicion to move away from the planeswalker decks and replace them with brawl decks: almost triple the price, they don't need to put too much of chase uncommons (they can't put more than one), they don't need to put the booster pack on the deck, and they must probably have a clue of how many will sell in comparisson to planeswalkers deck (for exemple: they revealed Chullane way early and the card for sure sold the product...);
IF the product will sell more, sell for more, and need less logistics to produce and sell... why should wizards keep up with the other decks?
btw for new players wizards gives 60 card decks for free.
Whatever is going to replace Planeswalker decks, better have 4 kinds per set, and better cost under $15.
I do wish that it wasn't brawl decks that replaced Planeswalker decks though. The precons have to be built with regular MTG in mind that showcases the themes and mechanics of the set.
They should just bring back Theme Decks, and release 4 per set (5 for core sets), except it would cost a couple bucks more and have 3 rares instead of 2.
Discontinuing PW decks and replacing them with Brawl does not quite make sense. Each is aimed on different target group. Brawl are not entry-level product...
Keeping them only for Core makes sense in that regard, though.
They should just bring back Theme Decks, except it costs a couple bucks more that it was back when they released Theme Decks, and to justify the cost, have 3 rares, maybe 5 rares, and have one of them be a foil creature card, kind of like intro packs, but unlike intro packs, they are built for people who already know the basics, and is basically a deck that you can build off of, not something to replace, because it sucks.
My friend, a store owner, raised the question in a FB group. Here is a word of WotC:
- Yes, after Theros, PW decks are Core Set only
- Brawl decks are so far only one-shot for Eldraine, then it will be seen how they fared, but they are definitely not a new regular addition
- There is a new entry-level product coming to replace PW decks.

WOTC: The Planeswalker Decks will be replaced with... Theme Decks. To eliminate waste, the packaging will simply be a shrink wrapped deck inside a shrink wrapped deck box. Each display comes with 12 decks, 4 kinds, 3 copies per kind.
Me: AWWWW YEAAAAAHHHHH!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! Now only if they got rid of the Core Set Planeswalker Decks and replaced them with Theme Decks too.
[After buying Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Theme Decks, and opening one of them, and looking at the strategy insert]
Me: No decklist? NO!!! NO!!! SCREW YOU WOTC!!! FIRE THE STAFF! CLEAN HOUSE!
All I know is that this new product better be an actual fixed 60-card preconstructed deck, and must come in a set of 4.
Is there any reason why the Core Set Planeswalker Decks must be 2 per set instead of 5 like it was in the more recent 2 Core Sets? Will this new product also be released for Core Sets alongside the Planeswalker deck, which is why they might have decreased the 5 Planeswalker Deck to 2?
As the main set associated precon (I view them as all one continuous product being renamed and changed, rather than discontinued and a new product replacing it),
Theme Decks 1997-2008, 11 years
Intro Packs 2008-2016, 8 years
Planeswalker Decks 2016-2019, 3 1/2 years
Considering how well received the Planeswalker Decks were over the Intro Pack, kind of weird those only lasted 3 years. Must be that they aren't getting more money from those who like to buy all the precons in the set, because they are releasing 2 per set instead of 4 or 5.
I won't shed any tears for PW Decks going away, if that they do. For an intro product they were nothing less than horrible jank with severely limited card interactions.
Quite disagree with this. For intro product they were quite good, and M20 ones are even a little bit better.
For me, as strictly casual player, in MTGA the M20 blue and black, and Ravnica's Domri's and Ral's are quite successful (in unranked - that is, for intro product).
Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and Zendikar Rising did not mention anything about Planeswalker Decks.

It’s got to be the brawl decks replacing the walker decks
