So what do we think these changes might be? From the sounds of it, it's going to be something somewhat similar to the 'Metamorphosis' set change announcement that we got after the release of Khans of Tarkir and the later 'Metamorphosis 2.0' structural change. It seems unlikely that they will be changing set structure again so soon, so what else could be changing? A new card type? New evergreen keywords/changes? Something about new printing technology?
There are multiple new premium treatments.
'Showcase cards' will be special art treatments unique to each set and its themes and mechanics.
All of the Throne of Eldraine cards with an as of yet unknown new mechanic by default have this special text box.
All of those cards with the mechanic also have a showcase version which further plays up the storybook style.
Borderless planeswalkers will also appear with every set for that set's planeswalkers.
Extended art frames will be available in the new 'collector booster' products.
Showcase cards and borderless planeswalkers will show up in regular draft boosters.
New 'theme boosters' include 35 cards all of which match some theme, which can vary set to set, such as color- as will be featured in ELD. They have 1.1 rares/mythic rares and 33–34 commons/uncommons on average.
New 'collector boosters' feature 15 cards and 1 foil token card. Extended art frame cards can be found in collector boosters. They include:
1 rare/mythic rare with extended art
1 foil rare/mythic rare
9 foil commons/uncommons
3 special-frame cards (showcase or borderless planeswalkers)
1 non-foil card from ancillary products such as planeswalker decks and buy-a-box promos
Foil cards will be showing up at higher frequencies from now on as well. From 1 in 67 to 1 in 45 cards, or from about one in four boosters to one in three.
With the release of ELD, preconstructed brawl decks will be released, each with '7 new mechanically unique cards'. With that, 1v1 Brawl is now coming to Arena.
The end of paper Magic tournaments is nigh. All the "pro" events and qualifiers will be through Arena starting in 2020. Profit margins are higher, and there's no need for judges or TOs, or to scrounge enough physical product on hand to supply players and have prize support.
I would also not be surprised if the announcement stated that "Throne of Eldraine" will be the last paper Magic product.

If they want to kill the game, sure.
The pro circuit is ill-defined currently, and moving to online only, when a mobile version of Arena doesn't even seem to be on the docket, would be a stupid move.

This just feels like catastrophising to me. There's no real reason to suspect this will happen any time soon.

I recall reading that WotC averages $75 per person on Arena. Not sure if this is per month or what. If we assume it's per month, there is a lot of room for growth before "shutting down" paper Magic.
WotC has to feel they've reached a tipping point where the loss of paper players is more than offset by the gain in digital players. Which is fine. The only money WotC sees from me is through paper Magic. So the harsh reality is that I won't be following Magic to the digital side with my wallet unless I see the necessary value in doing so. I'm sure a not-insignificant portion of the paper players feel the same way.
I'll say that the changes that will be talked about might have something to do with Arena's Historic format that was discussed a while back.
If it were WotC's call, I wouldn't be concerned about paper Magic being shut down. But, it isn't.
It's Hasbro.
The same company that made an SDCC exclusive, $150 Ghostbusters Optimus Prime for no apparent reason other than to see how many people were willing to fork over that much money for colored cardboard and plastic.
The same company that made "Monopoly for Millennials" and replaced the properties with experiences. Why? Because, as the packaging itself states: "Forget real estate. You can't afford it anyway." Enough people thought this was a good idea that it was greenlit and produced.
I have no faith in Hasbro to make intelligent decisions regarding Magic. But we'll know in less than 24 hours what news MaRo will be unveiling to us.

There is a big difference between producing a cash grab silly item and shutting down a money making machine that is paper Magic.

Exactly. Arena is rather affordable at the moment, seeing as you can get cards by simply playing enough. Of course, Arena's accessibility can bring in more players. Regardless, paper magic is very successful at the moment. Hasbro and WotC are both getting plenty of return on that investment and abruptly cancelling it would easily risk more than they might stand to gain.
I'll say that the changes that will be talked about might have something to do with Arena's Historic format that was discussed a while back.
What, like introducing some version of that to magic in general? That seems like an odd change to announce in this way; if nothing else. I would think it has more to do with design given MaRo alone is announcing it and talking about it alongside ELD.

We'll going to make our own magic then, with blackjack and hookers

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
In all seriousness, I kind of doubt he would go through a new design philosophy at a con panel, and if it were just products becoming more regular (like 2 commander sets a year), I doubt there would be this much build up for it. So really this probably something more mundane but still interesting enough to keep a panel's audience excited. He did say we would need an article to walk us through the change. My bet is that they are going to announce some kind of new format (Post Modern, a "modern" version of Commander, etc.) or a new card type. Probably a new card type. Maybe like Fortifications or something.
I'm going to hazard a guess that this is related to supplemental products in some way becoming more than "supplemental".
Its almost definitely this.
(I hope)
EDIT: I actually meant to post it would be about a new format or retroactive legality change to supplemental products. I'd like that, the formats now are not super accessible without massive secondary market investment
To all of the people talking about the death of paper Magic, Modern is the format that gets the most views, it's the one that sells expensive packs, and they have said it's not practical to move it to Arena. there is also Commander, which probably hs more players than any sanctioned format. the Commander product each year is a huge seller, and those players won't just move online. WotC would alienate so many people with that move, it will never happen. Digital may become bigger, but they would never leave all the money on the table that they would lose from ending paper Magic. Don't trust their intentions, don't trust their intelligence or goodwill to the community or any of the other effective lies, just trust their greed.

A new non rotating format right after selling Modern Horizons at a premium price (and it's cards that they clearly wouldn't want in a new non rotating format) would generate significant amounts of bad will among the playerbase. I can't see them doing this.

Well I can see them doing a modern commander but with planeswalkers as commanders and supplemental product that goes right into modern.
Looking how litle kess has efectively affected the meta game I don’t think they would be scared to do something like this.
> making product sell more.
> making a format were people don’t complain that the mana base is worth a used car.
> making new cards more atractive for the format than they would be for commander

Older Magic as a Board Game: Panglacial Wurm , Mill
Mark is doing this solo too, so it should be interesting no matter what it is
I would also not be surprised if the announcement stated that "Throne of Eldraine" will be the last paper Magic product.
6th color = Purple.
They can remove the list and still proceed to NOT print any of the too powerful cards, i.e., price will not go down for those desirable cards.
I honestly could care less if the list remains locked. Some of the chase cards are too damn powerful anyways.
Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest WUR Voltron Control
Temmet, Vizier of Naktamun WU Unblockable Mirror Trickery
Ra's al Ghul (Sidar Kondo) and Face-Down Ninjas
Brudiclad, Token Engineer
Vaevictis (VV2) the Dire Lantern
Rona, Disciple of Gix
Tiana the Auror
Hallar
Ulrich the Politician
Zur the Rebel
Scorpion, Locust, Scarab, Egyptian Gods
O-Kagachi, Mathas, Mairsil
"Non-Tribal" Tribal Generals, Eggs
