This year's San Diego Comic-Con collection is a boxed set of alternate art versions of the God-Eternals, as well as Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God from War of the Spark.
They look absolutely amazing, but good God, they couldn't have picked like... good and playable cards? Teferi? Narset? Karn? Anything? What a disappointment.

To be fair, these collections aren't exactly meant for competitive players - they're meant for collectors.

Collectible bad cards don't hold value. Just go look at many of the past SDCC cards. The ones that see play are astronomical. The ones that don't are $20-30.

until you try to buy or sell something, that something is worth exactly 0$ and most collector would never sell their collectibles. So, what does it matter if these cards are worth money or not on the secondary market? (unless you see them as an "investment" instead of a collectible, of course).
These are going to be impossible to get now, based on the War of the Spark masterpiece fiasco.
It used to be that people didn’t know about these. But now every noob on arena knows about every promo.

I have spent the last several years buying and selling the sdcc Planeswalker sets. I routinely go with several of my friends at Comic-Con to buy these. I generally make enough money to sustain keeping one set, and making a reasonable profit selling the rest. (the only one I still actually have is a full color-matched signed set of the Terese Nielson ones from last year). This will probably be the least productive set they've ever done; considerably worse then the amonkhet ones 2 years ago.
It's a shame, because the art style and design is absolutely amazing. I wish that would have been done to Teferi, Narset, Karn, and cards that actually see considerable play.

and it is wotc's responsibility to give you an appreciating asset?
I think not. some collectors will think they look good and buy them and others will not be interested. that is why they are produced as a limited edition. if they were meant for mass appeal they would not be con exclusives

I'm a simple Magic player since 1 year ago from China. Now I live in New Jersey.
Well I don’t like this as much as I like the Egypt (Hieroglyphs) or the zombie ones (and some of the back in Black) but I guess those are something ? Again I don’t like the avengers reference in the face, and probably liliana should be in it too. Think is a really easy pass
If you are referring to the art, which is hard to appreciate due to the OP resizing them, I can't argue as art is subjective. I think Nicole Bolas looks freaking amazing, myself.
But just be aware the OP has made them bigger than the original art that was shown, so they look pretty blown out from what they would actually look like. To be fair, the original story on io9 didn't give the best look at them, even at the size they revealed them they are pretty compressed images.
Only way id buy these is if they were cheaper than than the normal version. I get the artist was trying for a certain style...but that style looks pretty awful.

What's your guesstimate on how much a set will sell for on the secondary market?
I would've loved these to have all had Bolas making them into God-Eternals with Bolas himself being embued with the sparks of the planeswalkers on his own card.
This set of cards is called Bolas's Engame. Why not give these more meaning than "let's put these cards with the landscape of the guild in which you should play them with in standard?"

For what it's worth, Wizards felt a similar need to do so in terms of implementing a certain list of cards. I don't want to belittle your argument, but this is what the game has ultimately become.
I could care less about these cards or any of the other releases. I play Magic to play it, and when I enjoy a card enough to beautify it I either spend the money to do so or I ignore if I cannot afford it. Magic should be a hobby, not a stock market.
