Embodiment of Agonies enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each different mana cost among nonland cards in your graveyard. (For example, 2B and 1BB are different mana costs.)
Lol this looks like soo commander focused but also soo "build around me in standard" btw sad that don't count lands a +1/+1 counter for sure would be good to even maybe make it modern playable.
This is so bizarre...but it seems pretty good. Especially with the split cards and hybrid mana cards in standard, it's not really unreasonable for this to be a 3 mana 5/5 flying deathtouch as early as turn 4 or 5.
This seems so powerful.
Faithless looting and tome scour will play well with this.
I know the card is a literal blank when there is graveyard hate, but this seems so versatile. Leyline of the Void will be huge in standard because of this card.

Would split cards give two counters?
And suddenly that funky overload discard spell from Horizons has a new purpose.
Split cards have a combined CMC of both halves in any place other than the stack, so you don't get 1 and 3 for Incubation // Incongruity, instead you get 4 CMC. Surveil I think is the keyword/deck archetype that this may have a place in.
I think the potential issue of the card is that it checks the graveyard when it ETB, but doesn't change with the graveyard like Tarmogoyf does. Goyf entering on curve as a 1/2 is common but shortly becomes a 4/5 or 5/6. Playing this on curve as a 2/2 or 3/3 is okay, but I'd assume isn't great -- whereas if it continuously checked I think it would be heavily played even if a gravewipe turned into a kill spell against him. I feel like a 2/2 flying deathtouch that could grow to 5/5/ or 6/6 would be nice. Past 6/6 is kind irrelavant without trample and the gravehate to kill would have been a good drawback. As is it's harder to kill, but limits the upside. I think it's a decent finisher if you are a counterspell deck and the low cmc allows you to drop your finisher on 6 mana and hold up a counter, but with three CMC Teferi counters aren't in a great place so I'm not sure how played this could be. I think Surveil control is the shell though, just likely poorly placed against Teferi metagame.
Split cards *shouldn't* give 2 counters, because the spell only has *one* mana cost in every zone besides the stack, but they're still a fantastic way to stock your graveyard with multiple distinct mana costs at the same point on your curve (i.e. playing Footlight Fiend and Duress giving you 2 one drops that can both be cast for a single black mana but count independently for this guy).
Split cards have 2 mana costs. Its that the total cmc is the total and they only have one mana cost on the stack because you're only casting half. It's pretty decent with split cards and silly with the 5 split card in silver border land. It's not broken or anything but it sure could be big if you can cast it in dredge.
Split cards have one *CMC* in every zone except the stack, but this card is very clearly NOT checking for CMC per the parentheses text, hence my question. This is a whole new thing they're doing.
If only this checked across all yards instead of only your own... would thar be too powerful
This will be good in Standard, especially with all the reanimation strategies putting stuff in your yard and proliferate to add more counters as the game progresses.
In Modern, with the current meta having so much graveyard hate and this being literally useless with Leyline of the Void out makes me question its viability, at least for now. It could be good at some point. It’s very reasonable to have a 6/6 flying, deathtouch for 3 with some of the stuff some decks play.
Wow, interesting design here, playing w/ different casting costs. Too bad Tiny Leaders has fallen by the wayside, this can be fun w/ costs like: B, 1, BB, 1B, 2, BBB, 2B, 1BB, and 3. That right there is nine +1/+1 counters.

You are right, I didn't quite catch that. As of now the comp rules don't quite handle this, I don't believe. I *assume* this means that we'll get an update upon release explicitly defining a spells mana cost in all zones other than the stack as the sum of all the mana symbols on the card (but phrased much better).
708.4b. The mana cost of a split card is the combined mana costs of its two halves. A split card's colors and converted mana cost are determined from its combined mana cost.
Example: Assault/Battery's mana cost is {3}{R}{G}. It's a red and green card with a converted mana cost of 5. If you cast Assault, the resulting spell is a red spell with a converted mana cost of 1.
Right from the rulebook - so Embodiment will see a split with a mana cost combined.
Instants and sorceries are of course the most convenient way to pump the effect. Here are some examples with cmc 1-10:

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Instants and sorceries are of course the most convenient way to pump the effect. Here are some examples with cmc 1-10:
Just to clarify this again, while those certainly are different CMCs and therefore different mana costs, you can ALSO have different mana costs within each CMC, like the example explicitly laid out on the card.
Fun card but I don't know how this is in a core set instead of like Modern Horizons - multiple people here have already confused how it works.

Fair enough. I wasn't sure if they'd covered this. Thanks!
Now it makes me wonder how long they've been sitting on a card like this. It's pretty unique.
So... Is no mana cost different from 0 mana cost for this card?
Supposing I have a lotus bloom (no mana cost) and an Ornithopter (0 mana cost) in my graveyard.
Does this come into play with 1 or 2 counters? (most probably 1, tho as no mana cost is not a mana cost).
Umm, junk rare. Two black makes it hard to construct around for trying to get multi colored cards, and even if you do manage to get cards into graveyard early, even in two colors, probably only going to be a 3/3. The other half of the time it'll be a 2/2 or worse.
The fact that it's ETB means that it doesn't benefit from graveyard at a later stage. At least something like Consuming Aberration scales as the games goes on. So does Tarmogoyf.
I'm sure some people will try to build around it in constructed, but figure out that it's just a little too much effort for a 4/4 flyer (investing resources, time and mana) at best and an over-costed creature the rest of the time.

Not counting changelings, of course.
I wouldn't mind having this "different mana cost matters" becoming a recurring mechanic in the future.
