Well, a Hydra tribal legend. To bad it is monogreen instead of Gruul, but it'll do for now.
As for the Knight, A brainstorm on a stick which recurs. Again proving that green got shafted hard in this cycle. Can't blame them though, the Titan and the Primoridal were both overpowered.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
OOOOH SO CLOOOOOSE! IF THE HYDRA WAS GRUUL IT WOULD HAVE BEN ARE HYDRA TRIBAL LEGEND WE ALL HAVE BEN WAITING FOR!
(but really green is in a way all you need for hydra tribal since most of them are mono green)
and the blue knight
Sweet it’s etb is brainstorm and a shuffle your library trigger
That hydra. Absolutely stunning. If we ever get a simic or blue kraken support like this card I would totally lose it. In the meantime, a brilliant card for hydra tribal!
1. Cost efficient body that attacks and defends
2. Nice defensive ability for your whole crew
3. Cost reduction works well with most hydras, even those without x in their cost.
While it isn't gruul, there are only 5 hydra-related red cards I am interested in (apocalypse/savageborn/molten hydra, ulasht, and meanderer) so I'm willing to make that trade off.
As for the blue cavalier, that card is absolutely blufftastic! Do I want to draw those 2 cards back (please let my guy live) or is the top of my library dead (I benefit if this guy dies)? As both abilities are decent and the body is good, this cavalier may see some actual play.
Honestly you don't need red. Like, you get to add Ulasht, the hate seed to your deck and...maybe Apocalypse Hydra and that's about all I would consider. Hydras should be Simic if anything because you might as well enjoy the full wonders of big mana.

If Brainstorm play patterns in Legacy are any indication, chances are that the top of your library is dead unless it's a card with Miracle or you shuffled it yourself.

Latest I've seen in Modern is that Cavalier of Thorns actually provides good value in Modern. Sometimes, you get a nuts tempo boost because the land ETB untapped.

Techniquely utility for getting damage though is in red
Gargos being monogreen is such a letdown and really makes little sense if they wanted to push him as the new face of hydra tribal decks, other than that though he is an impressive card. Big body with great abilities and undercosted to boot.
Blue cavalier is arguably the best of that cycle as well. Natch.
I mean, you could play the GR hydra and that commander and this new card in the 99 if you insist on having red. I think this is great since most hydra decks would favor being mono-green. Having to incorporate red in this card may have changed it from what it ended up being

I could see it, maybe in a graveyard based deck, but the triple green kind of shafts it outside of monogreen. While it does potentially gives you a tempo boost, it also shunts a lot of things into the yard and most monogreen decks don't actually use the yard as a resource. Cavalier of Thorns is not a good card compared to the other Cavaliers, at least they are useful in monocolored strategies, in green you have better options for a five drop.
Isn't it weird how much tribal we got in Modern Horizons and now M20? I would think it's because the upcoming set has a big tribal component, but Modern Masters doesn't even affect that, so... Is it just some new approach to make the game more beginner-friendly? I'm not even sure if I like it or not, and this coems from someone who loves tribal. It's just so strange.
Love the hydra, my commander for hydra tribal EDH is Xenagos and what red brings to be table in big mana is very useful, still a hydra will be getting kicked out for this guy for sure.

MH1 was tribal support for modern. There are a lot of tribal in the format (thanks to among other things Lorwyn/Shadowmoor), and there are a few tier 2 and tier 3 tribal decks in modern that needed a boost (such as Goblins for example).

To be fair green is the color best equipped to splash+ for a color and still be able to cast triple-C cards.
True, but you have to lean pretty heavily into black for a graveyard based strategy, and that is considerably more than "a splash" and not conductive to its triple green cost. Such a deck would be unlikely to be competitive in Standard or Modern.

If you read mark Rosewater's blog, most requests are for tribal cards. Its simply filling requests that aren't problematic. The hydra, for example, functions quite well as a hydra lord, heroic lord, or generic beat stick.
Love the Hydra. Like many others I would have liked to have seen it be more colors. This would have actually been a great pick for the Temur wedgend IMO.
