... Oooooor you could just cast Demon of Catastrophes and get a bigger creature for less mana and no discard. I mean, I get this thing is repeatable (in theory), but that still seems like an awful lot of hoops to jump through in order to get Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath's token.
It's cool that it's repeatable, but I'd rather have it cost a lot of one resource than a little of a lot of resources. Like, no sacrifice or life payment, but discard three cards. That way, you could build the deck around amassing a lot of the one resource, to convert it into demons; rather than constantly having to juggle your life total, creatures in play, and cards in hand, just to make sure that you can afford to take a hit to all three.

Or Desecration Demon so they have keep saccing a creature to not get hit for 6, or more, each turn.
And this is why i hate win more cards like the spoiled card. It does literally nothing when you need it to and literally nothing to help an already secure board state.

Ok, let’s get something straight here.
Everything is good in EDH. It’s a singleton, casual format. High, CMC cards are allowed to thrive because they are mostly redundant versions of similar, cheaper cards, and the casual draw is also there.
It wasn’t so bad in recent years, but lately this “Good in EDH” comment thing has become a freaking epidemic. At the very least, explain why it’s good in EDH.
Ok, rant over. As for the card, it’s pretty cool. You can create a semi-decent value engine with Persist/Undying creatures and Squee, Goblin Nabob.
Being able to create some ETB value, it’s not bad. A tad expensive. Though.
Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.

I feel that "good" is too strong a word, here. "Playable" maybe. But not "good".
While I don't like it, if it was Blue and made Krakens instead, I know I'd play it. So for demon fans, it's fine. I do agree it is an overcosted ability on an overcosted card, though. 2 life and either discard or sacrifice would have been fine on a 6 CMC colored artifact.
Honestly I'd say the cost on this that needs to go isn't the life, sac, or discard, but the tap.
Pay 2, Sac a creature, discard a card: Make a demon.
And then it just plays into an Aristocrat-y value engine set-up. Where you only care about the demon you make to sac it to make another demon and get more value off of all your other ETB/Dies triggers.

I'm sorry, I thought my 'discard and sacrifice outlet with repeatable creation of good sized tokens of a relevant tribe' was a pretty reasonable 'why'.
And not everything is good in EDH. Most of the Modern staples are not great. I don'the think it will be Paradox Engine good, and I don't play black, I run OG Omnath. But it seems on the surface to be the sort of engine card people get excited about.

i say this is a scale situation of being or not being edh only card
the big problem is thats a huge cost for just a 5/5 demon with flying and there are alot easier ways to get those 5/5 demons since this is definately not the first card to make 5/5 flying demons

...and Tarmogoyf. Yeah, not everything is good in EDH.
I agree with you, though. I'm also sick of people saying "good in EDH." And people should explain why something is good. I've seen way too many comments declaring something good in EDH that is actually pretty garbage. EDH is the format where more cards are allowed to shine than in any other format. But we still have standards.
This is a card designed for limited, something you can play to break up a board stall. Not everything is designed for constructed. Not everything is designed to be a good card. Some cards are designed to be the 23rd card in your limited deck and that's okay.

Well, I figured cards that don’t function mechanically due to the format restrictions was a given, but you’re right.
My main point is that you are likely to see Wood Elemental hit the board and do something relatively dumb in this format. And, not be surprised in the slightest. Whether it due to a limited collection, your general play-style, or just because it reminds you of your grandmothers kitty Mr. Tinkles, people will play whatever makes them happy. In that regard, the expectation should already be “this card is good in EDH”.
Not particularly good. But we can see this as a 5/5 demon with flying for 4BB with ETB ability of sac creature, lose 2 life and discard 1 card. That gains pseudo-vigilance if you pay 2 life and discard a card. That is relevant in sealed.
I'm sure it will be good in EDH. a technically discard and sacrifice outlet and some demons, it won't be good, but I'm sure some legendary creature is spiking in 3....2....1....
I'm sure it will be horrible in EDH. It is a very expensive and limited outlet. When looking for a discard or sacrifice outlet there are tonnes of so many better cards to do that job than a 6 cmc coloured artifact.
It will be playable in the same way wood elemental or goblin guide is playable, you can put it in the deck if you like it, but it is a bad card in EDH.
this looks bad as the only format I play is modern. However, it probably has uses in other places like EDH.
There is probably some budget Teysa deck or something where this card could be playable if you couldn't get some better card. But generally EDH is a lot about card advantage and getting value. Spending 6 mana and 3 cards/2cards+token for a 5/5 flier is disastrously bad.

This is exactly the kind of card I would've fallen in love with when I started playing kitchen table magic; a sac outlet with a HUGE repeatable payoff? would've built like 4 decks around this card. So yeah, it'll be okay in EDH and unplayable in other formats except (hopefully, since this seems sweet) limited. Feels very nostalgic, I can't wait to see new players eyes light up at the pre-release when they see this at uncommon.
Also, this thing costs a lot of mana, geez.
