The whole sacrifice activated abilities is a design space i wish they explored more - it'd hold off a bit the inherent power creatures are coming out the gates with while still maintaining them front and center.
Is it just me or does this really hurt mono-red? Chump block all day (or start killing their creatures if you manage to get multiples out), and then safety net against any other spell to the head, excluding Banefire = 5 or greater...?

Oh, well, Mono-U got a better Surge Mare of sorts, or at the very least, a Chainwhirler-proof 1/1 flyer. I'm surprised they decided to bring protection back since it's a very uninteractive mechanic, at least it seems to be absent from commons, else Limited could devolve into a snoozefest.
