So I was right, M2020 will revolve around Chandra growing up on Regatha. Kinda like this new approach. Gives the coresets much needed identity while also revealing stuff about Magic's past without having to halt story progress for one set.
Not entirely sure I'm into multiple cards for a single walker per set thing, but whatever.
Also:
"Chandra, Awakened Inferno deals X damage to target creature or planeswalker. If a permanent dealt damage this way would die this turn, exile it instead."
Does this mean the second sentence only applies to creatures, or can planeswalkers die as well? I don't think they've ever used die for planeswalkers.

Seriously need an altered set as charmander and his evolutions.

I like this but the WAR chandra is also quite good...I'm not sure I'm ready for a transformational sideboard plan in standard in red decks where they just jam walkers up the curve...
6 mana chandra is scary but I don't think it's modern playable? You could probably hit this t4 fairly reliably but that's like a t10 kill.
The little chandra that spits out the two 1/1s seems very good. Especially with stuff that increases damage from red sources.
Chandra, Novice Pyromancer feels far above the typical uncommon walker to me. Costs 1 less then Jaya, Venerated Firemage, same starting loyalty and -2 ability, other two abilities are far better then Jaya's and the first one upticks loyalty.
I wonder if "loyality manipulation" will become a recurring part of the red color pie. Even if secondary to GW.
I really hope so. It fits Reds natural charisma and the fact that they do care very deeply for their close friends, which walkers are the best approximation in game, it's such a great flavour win and adds some more depth to there design space (as an unapologetic red mage, I'm stoked to see that)
Thinking about it... This set will most likely have FOUR Chandras.
Don't forget the planeswalkers decks!
Anyway, I wonder how much of Chandra's backstory are they going to retcon to make her look like the current Chandra instead of the Chandra who burglarized a sanctuary to get the Ghostfire scroll and burned it down just to escape.
Why do you look surprised? Don't you know the real name of the game is actually Retcon: the Gathering? WotC loves so much their own lore that they can't resist to completely rewrite the oldest stories each decade or even less.
I guess Planeswalkers aren’t as “special” as they were back in the day when they were only Mythic when there were only 2-4 per set. This is definitely a new era for MTG.
I think this is the first plus ability emblem? Looks good. Will definitely look to getting some for either Grixis or Jeskai control
I believe this is the first. Gideon of the Trials has a 0 ability that grants an emblem, but there haven't been any other planeswalkers printed that grant an emblem for a cost that adds loyalty.

Lapsed DCI Rules Advisor - Retired from playing but still hanging around
O well some points:
-origins all over again
-uncommon and rare walkers that looks really playable (I know they are the first spoilers, the ones to hype the set)
-mythic walker with static ability and 3 other loyalty ability
-rare Chandra has one effect that is desirable in modern much like litle Jace from origins(but not mythic rare), and the elemental tokens can be relevant too
-big Chandra wins the game in 6 turns with her + ability, her and liliana dreadhorde commander both are gamewinning if let alone liliana is better vs midrange strategies, Chandra is better vs control strategies
-please can we move on off the gatewatch, there is soo much variants of those characters alread, can wizards please stop making the usual members in main sets after core 20? Like make them in the intro decks of the collection if they are in the story of the block/set, make new and interesting characters as main sales of the sets, Comeon we they will stop printing new jaces and Chandras after we get the 100th new card of each of them?
-I like those 3 Chandra cards, really, just tired of soo many cards with just those characters, think they could save cards for them in the main set when something really special happens to them, the last 4 jaces and Chandras has nothing of special, liliana at least was commanding a horde of zombies last time we saw her (her other cards tho are kind of the same), Gideon at least had a sword that could exile things(but aside ally of zendikar his other cards are kind the same, tho he has less cards), Nissa (?) (well that is other level of same kind of card being printed over and over again, with her amonkhet card being very distinct from the others at least). If we look at ajani he has at least 3 styles of cards, not the ideal but at least it gives depht to the character, garruk has 3-4 styles, Vraska 3, Sarkhan 4, Sorin 3 (or almost). Those characters have diferent style or archetypes of cards but they have less printing than gatewatchers, those have like 4 each but 5x more cards in sets
for those wanting to move away from these walkers... don't think. it's gonna happen. wotc prez has made it a point that they wanted the game to revolve around a series of specific walkers (like chandra). this creates a sort of attachment to the game that makes it easier to sell. it's been like this for years now. it's not about to change.
I kinda wish that mythic chandra's last ability could target players and exiled them upon lethal because I'd love to have a card that allows me to send a defeated opponent to the shadow realm.
Inferno Chandra is busted, the emblems stack and they remain even after she dies. Unstoppable recurring damage that can't be interacted with every turn... Sign me up.

I don't like uncommon planeswalkers so soon after WAR. I was all about them, but I don't want it to be an all the time thing. And I really don't need to see the same character three times a set. Even if it's my favorite character (which she isn't), I'm quite satisfied with one card.
Okay, I just realized the rarity does not match the chronological order of her backstory. God, this is going to be so confusing to people.
Yeah, that bugs me too. When I design three stages for the other four core Gatewatch, I'm probably going to try sticking to the more intuitive uncommon-rare-mythic order.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Chandra was already the star of a core set, and the Kaladesh storyline was Chandra centric. Is there no one else that they could have featured? She is already the Gatewatch member with the most explored backstory.
I am waiting for them to retcon Lili's History personally.
Acolyte of Flame's 0 ability is quite good. ALL red planeswalkers? Roight-o!
'buster
Sarkhan the Masterless can conveniently turn all non red Planeswalkers red with his +1....
He also rather INconveniently makes them all not planeswalkers anymore. So Chandra Acolyte's first 0 will not add loyalty to anyone, not even herself, after Sarkhan uses his ability to turn all walkers into creatures.
Chandra is the new face of the game. It only makes sense to push her in the Core Set. Dropping her to Uncommon and Rare, as well as presumably a Planeswalker deck , ensures every new player will get at least one Chandra card.
Hopefully this combined with the Chandra comic and her being on the title card for the new Magic netflix series really means that she's basically the new main character of MTG rather than Jace.
Inferno Chandra is great. Your opponents WILL be taking damage for the rest of the game once she's cast.
To air out a concern I have on a touchy subject: As someone who is of mixed ethnicity, I wish Chandra looked more mixed. Obviously she was first designed all those years ago as she still appears: A pale, red headed woman with very european features. But then they went back and explained in her origin that she is from a plane based on India with at least one parent who is obviously meant to be analogous to an indian person from our world. So if we compare Chandra to her parents... She doesn't look like she is related to either of them. In fact, we've been to her home plane and no one on Kaladesh bears any resemblance to Chandra whatsoever. I'm not saying that they need to completely redesign Chandra, that would be jarring. But tweaking her design a little bit to make her look more related to her parents would be great. They did it for Gideon already.

"Pop in, find a dragon, roast a dragon."

I don’t want to hear any more *****ing about Jace being over exposed.
You misunderstand. This is just fuel for the fire that the Gatewatch as a whole is overexposed and will create additional separate complaints for every single Chandra that she is overexposed. This will happen without reducing the amount of complaints about Jace being overexposed. But every time they'll print Chandra without also printing Jace there will now also be complaints about the game becoming to PC since she's female.
That seems to fit the pattern you can review from previous sets much better than any complaints ceasing.
Though I also fully expect those complaints to surface and really this set's presentation here actually doesn't seem far off from the behavior that originally caused the complaints about Jace due to (at least) two lines of thinking:
Chandra actually follows right after Jace in "marketable" planeswalkers following an archetype that will cause part of the audience consider tired and has actually been pushed as a character just barely less than Jace (if at all) as both have been around since Lorwyn and kicked of planeswalker Duel Decks together - they aren't far off in what they are...
Chandra is also just like Jace one thing not: another planeswalker that hasn't been in multiple sets during the last few years. Any time we get a Core Set themed around a single planeswalker that hasn't been seen in a while, that's not overexposure (Garruk or the first time we got a Bolas theme), and if the theme is presented as well/balanced across a group it hits far less (e. g. Magic Origins). (So in theory this set could feature five planeswalkers with five cards each to deflate this point, but with the Gatewatch storywise where it is, that seems just not likely the way the next set is going to be themed. Confirmed in a separate source AFAIK.)}
So as much as the complaints are annoying, overexposing another planeswalker was never going to solve it. The complaints always were about the feeling that one single planeswalker (or a small group) was pushed too much as designated protagonist(s). The only way to combat this is with a pattern of diversity (in planeswalker types).
The complaints about overexposure are often coupled with complaints about other populer characters receiving no exposure. If the chance is good that there are already more variants of your planeswalker than there are planeswalkers who never got a second card before WAR, then I personally am willing that the complaints at least have a point in calling out an imbalance.
That said I expect Chandra receiving her story arc and us moving on to a slightly different focus rather soon.
p. s.> I just realiyed that Chandra would be getting a second Core Set themed around her, too, right? Jace doesn't even have one yet.

Ajani's Last Stand, Rising Populace and Kaya's Ghostform definitely are templated as though dying is a thing planeswalkers do.
