I do agree Animated is a better choice then Live Action.
Live Action would only work if it had something like Game of Thrones' budget. Since that is impossible, animation is perfect.
I wonder which animation studio they would hire?
a style similar to The Last Airbender would be acceptable imo.
The series will be animated by Bardel Studios. You may have seen some of Bardel's work on Rick & Morty, Teen Titans Go!, and Netflix's The Dragon Prince.
I like the animation in The Dragon Prince, but the other two are definitely not appropriate for MtG.
I would be happy with whoever made the WAR trailer.
That just shows that the studio has range, which means it is a good choice.
Well, hopefully they can make The Gatewatch character more likeble and interesting.
Why would you want an animated series focused on a supervillain that would give Mengele a run for his money fighting an evil god who wants to conquer the multiverse, and then joining said evil god before them both getting killed because the supervillains doomsday device gets activated?
If you think Urza is a supervillain you either don't know that well the character or having moral parameters far too strict for my tastes.
I clearly know the character better than you. He was a mass murdering sociopath that made genetic experiments on unwitting subjects, and when his time travel experiments blew up in his face, he left Tolaria rather than helping with fixing the problems he caused. He blew up a continent to kill his brother. Oh, and he outright murdered Taysir. Then, when he finally met the evil god he had opposed, he joined them. Urza was a villain, he always was.
Mishra wasn't a guy better than him, he was greedy exactly as Urza for his own means, and that's why they ended in a war in the first place. The fact that you didn't like his methods, doesn't mean that he was evil, since his plan was to stop the greater evil. The end justifies the means, said Machiavelli.
Then, when he finally met the evil god he had opposed, he joined them.
Because Urza, as a true blue aligned artificer, values knowledge over anything else, and he realized it would be an immense waste to destroy something that could give endless possibilities if exploited for greater ends of progress and evolution.
Is Urza bounded by superior moral binds? No, absolutely, and that's why I love him, because he was a rational thinker over dogmatic but often unpractical principles. If he was evil? That's nonsense as well, as he never meant to do evil for the sake to be evil.
Urza didn't do anything that myself wouldn't do if I were in his place.
I clearly know the character better than you.
No dude, you don't know the character better than me. At best, you confirmed my second option, that your moral values are just too strict for me.
Is this animated series what the "MTG Movie", announced years ago, has become?
I don't think so because fox is now disney and netflix isn't disney (yet) and...
I don't understand anymore

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.

Maybe we'll get some Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. concept of a bunch of planeswalkers that act in the periphery of the card set storyline, but have their own story arc just by chance often visiting the plane of the season for an episode or two. Dack's (R.I.P.) comics acted in such a fashion, just coincidentally visiting a planeat just the time we first see it. Should have sat out Ravnica this time around.

If he was evil? That's nonsense as well, as he never meant to do evil for the sake to be evil..
So... by your very loose idea of "evil", does MtG have any villains?
I honestly can't think of any characters in MtG who is doing evil for the sake of evil. Ambition, whether for physical wealth or power, is not intrinsically evil, after all. A couple of characters like Eldrazi may use purple-and-orange morality that renders them effectively amoral but that's about it.
The story that will be used will be tied to the current set of cards. Do you honestly believe Hasbro and WotC would not take an opportunity to help sell more product and get more young adults involved with the game? For those of you that have read the Book you might imagine a story that follows more in detail what happened up to and including the War that was written in the novel. These companies are not looking to please some old fans of story lines of the past that only helps Netflix's bottom line, they want to tie in the series to current product releases in order to drive more sales.
Well, hopefully they can make The Gatewatch character more likeble and interesting.

I never claimed Mishra was good. Honestly, both of them were evil, arrogant, pricks.
Let me explain Urza's level of evil during his life, in no particular order:
He manipulated the daughter of the leader of a city state into falling in love with him so he could get access to the city's resources.
He destroyed an entire continent to kill his brother, in the same act creating the Shard of Twelve worlds, effectively cutting off Dominaria and 11 other planes from the multiverse. The blast had reverberations throughout the multiverse, creating multiple issues across hundreds of worlds not stuck in the shard, including but not limited to Lorwyn and Ravnica. The blast also created one of the time rifts (becomes important later).
He got into a spat with his brother over an artifact his brother found during an archeological dig, setting of a war that killed millions of people. (And had Urza just let his brother have it, none of the crap afterwards would have happened).
Directly dragged black mana to Serra's Realm despite knowing this would destabilize the plane because he had went to Phyrexia despite being told not to. He later used said instability to collapse the plane, killing thousands of innocents to fuel a power stone.
He did time travel experiments on Tolaria, despite being told that time travel was neigh impossible, causing a blast that created dozens, if not hundreds, of time bubbles, allowing Phyrexia to get a foothold on Tolaria/Dominaria due to a fast time bubble, killing dozens of children, and creating another time rift (that's two for two so far). And instead of sticking around and trying to help fix the disaster he caused, he left.
Made unethical genetic experiments on hundreds of people without their knowledge and consent.
Decieved the Kor, Vec, Dal, and Solitari to help his cause on Rath. Eventually sending the Solitari from being stuck in the shadows, to the blind eternities instead of dumping them on just about any plane in the Shard of 12 worlds.
Leaving Ertai to get captured on Rath, when he could easily have saved the young mage.
Deliberately recruiting Tevesh Szat to the Titans so that the insane planeswalker could murder one of the others (poor Daria), so he had an excuse to kill him to power another Powerstone. When called out on this by Taysir afterwards, he straight up murdered the Rabiah'n native.
Then when he finally came face to face with Yawgmoth, instead of opposing the Father of Machines, he joined him.
So no, Urza is not a hero by a long shot, he is a sociopathic villain through and through.

I totally agree. I simply can't believe Hasbro/WotC would pass up on the marketing angle here. While Netflix might buy in hoping to up their viewership by tapping into the MtG playerbase, Hasbro/WotC will need to get theirs. And pandering to the existing playerbase doesn't really do that for them. I'm sure there will be enough lore sprinkled in to acknowledge existing players are part of the viewership, but I don't see how that will be the driving force behind the show. Could totally be wrong, but I know if it were me, the show would tie in with a current product.
I mean he did end up creating Gerrard and Karn who put Yawgmoth down for the count.
But yeah Urza is only Heroic insofar as he was opposing Yawgmoth who was worse and his main motivation for beating Yawgmoth was it being personal.
Still he is certainly a more interesting main character then the Gatewatch.
Some of the Gatewatch are fairly interesting. Not Jace (although he got through some much needed character development in Ixalan), or Beefslab. But Nissa, Chandra, and Ajani are all fairly interesting characters, and their character development since Oath have just improved it. Teferi is fairly interesting as well, but he was alredy interesting when he got introduced way back in Mirage. Lily is most entertaining when she gets to play to her strengths, that of being a villain protagonist. Kaya needs a lot of work, but her motivation has started to shine through, she still needs character development to become interesting, and a backstory explaining her motivations would go a long way as well. But half the Gatewatch are interesting characters, the other half needs work.

I hate to be "that guy" but the preview image made by Netflix has Chandra on it. We are not getting an Urza TV show.
To be more specific, the preview art is Exquisite Firecraft. That the show would be about the current story (and the game's current identity) instead of one that ended almost two decades ago should be a no-brainer. The Urza stuff on this thread is wistful thinking, which shouldn't confused with serious predictions.

Nissa is inconsistent, I liked her more when she was a Xenophobe that was at least interesting contrast.
Chandra...nope...doesn't do anything for me I like her even less knowing she is suppose to be Fantasy Indian. Diversity cheat if you ask me. Not to mention she is budget Jaya knockoff and prevents Jaya from getting a good card....
Ajani is fine, I liked him with Elspeth. Doesn't get much to do.
Lili is good when she is allowed to be self centered so I agree on Villain Protag.
Kaya....is she suppose to be dumb. Cause I really have trouble with how someone can end up working for the worst of the worst twice and still supposedly be a "Hero"...I liked her better when I thought she was mercenary who was in it for the Gold and Magical Artifacts. That explain how one helps two Tyrants on two different planes cause again the only other explanation is she is dumber then Lili.
Teferi doesn't count agreed. And again doesn't get much to do. He at least gets good cards.

I think Nissa got some much needed character development in Origins and Amonkhet block. Origins explain why she started to shift away from the xenophobic ways of her people that got cemented in Worldwake when she broke the lock. Then in Amonkhet she learned to think things through instead of leaning heavily on instinct, adding a little blue to her character. She still has potential for future character development, which is good as that means they aren't getting rid of her anytime soon.
Chandra has gotten a lot of characterization and character development since her introduction. I agree that she started out as a less snarky version of Jaya, but the both of them being Pyromancer's that is not really surprising. However, since then she has started to move away from that characterization to such an extent that the only thing the two pyromancers have in common is that they are both Pyromancers and have a connection to Regatha. Jaya is more mature and wise compared to when we last saw her in Ice Age block, but still as snarky as ever. Chandra is impulsive to the extent that she pretty much have either ADHD or ADD, and is an awkward person who has shown attraction to people of both genders (she has a major crush on Nissa). Chandra has also started to dabble in green magic, as shown in Dominaria, thus broadening her characterization. I would not be surprised if she picked up a little white magic as well, particularly if it is light based.
Ajani still has story to go, but he grew from his angry young self that raged at the world when his twin died, to a gentle giant that is a mentor of younger people and inspires them to be better people. He will likely be central to the plot of the next visit to Theros.
Kaya needs backstory. The only logical reason I can see her hunting down and killing undead spirits in positions of power is because her homeworld is in the grip of such, and she sparked due to the actions of them. It gives a convenient excuse for her less than intelligent behavior. But we have seen to little of her so far to really make a decision about her either way. She still needs a lot of work to be an engaging character.
Teferi, like Kaya, is still new to the gatewatch, and I do agree he needs to get more action in story. But I think he could fit in well in the "advisor" role. After all, he is a couple of Millenium old by now, being one of the original students of the Tolarian Academy and all, so he should have accumulated a lot of wisdom.

I hope the series takes the time to develop the characters in a way that isn't rushed. I hope they have good dialog, and not the kind of awkward expository crap that passes for flavor text lately. I hope they have callbacks to cards that are done cleverly, and not shoehorned in for cheap fan service. I hope it's not anime, which frankly is tired and trite at this point.

i highly doubt the show is targeting the long enfranchised players (ie the people posting here). id temper any expectations based on that. it pretty much has to be a shallow representation of the mtg universe by necessity because people who have never heard of the game will need to be able to watch it and know what the hell is going on.

I assume they do original material or heavy adaptations cause honestly most of the Gatewatch content aint what I copy if I wanted to make a popular series. This isn't a Game of Thrones situation where D&D can coast on GRRM material.
Well, the Russo brothers are apparently long time fans and players of the game, and they are very skilled with ensemble casts, which is a necessity, so it will likely be a well made show.
I am just curious to which voice actors they're going to cast.

Forget about the Weatherlight saga, it's an old story that concluded 15+ years ago and doesn't ring a bell to most of the new players. It's also quite complicated. It needs to resonate with Magic as it is now.
Since it will be tied to the current Magic image, it will be very PC. So nobody will die (Like in GI-Joe), villains will be mustache-twirling overlords with stupid minions, there will be mandatory diversity, strong empowered females with witty lines and so on.
I liked Castlevania on Netflix, but here, I expect a kind of Power Rangers experience.
