We already have claim // fame so I'm not sure the 1 extra cmc matters but cycling seems great. Although getting back a renegade rallier with revolt active just sounds kind of silly.
Hmm esper with the new 3 mana teferi could pull off some neat stuff at instant speed potentially. Probably an esper fae or spirits list. Actually t4 teferi, plus, bring back a spell queller also sounds just kinda annoying :(.
Is this all that stratospherically better than Claim and Revival? I mean cycling is a nice feature, and 1 mana up-to-3-cmc is 'better' than 1-mana-up-to-2 and 2-mana-up-to-3. But those cards also each have another mode (Claim // Fame and Revival // Revenge) for versatility. If your plan was to use Snapcasters to recur these spells to recur Snapcasters, those worked.
I kinda feel like if this sort of sorcery were viable in modern, one of those cards would be seeing use. And they really aren't.
The fact that the art is of a reanimated Phyrexian Negator is so cool it actually makes me kind of irrationally angry. Like, how dare they commission something that rad!
at common no less? One mana reanimation should definitely fit in to some modern decks.
It's always been common. It's never been anything but common.
We already had one mana reanimation in modern with a versatility bonus in Claim // Fame. Sure it capped at 2 CMC rather than 3, but it could alsso make your creature (or some later creature) more powerful and hasty. And as much as I love Claim // Fame... as I understand it, it never really found an audience.

Yes I know it's always been common. They could have easily bumped it to uncommon if they wanted to but I am glad they did not.

i wonder if this will really see play, we already got reanimator decks and they tend to end the game (Griselbrand)
not sure if a cmc3 reanimator will really do it. the mentioned mentor and renegade rallier sure are nice cards to play with. or even spell queller with teferi. but is it really enough to make us want to play unearth in the decks that play these cards?

With respect, I think in a competitive environment this card is orders of magnitude better. Just the fact that it can actively cycle away to dig toward a potential target is a massive improvement to say nothing of being able to 'produce' mana by animating a hasty 3 drop for a single black.
as mentioned above, claim//fame already exists and doesnt see play. therefore for unearth to be different it would have to be on the back of 3 cmc creatures being reanimated or the cycling.

Hitting 3cmc vs. 2cmc is huge, imo. Forget the cycling bit, this hits many more significant targets than Claim does. Now, besides that, you can cycle this away, which just makes it that much better.
Also, there is now redundancy with this effect in the format. That opens avenues that at one time may have been closed off because of how narrow Claim/Fame was.
I’d bet some good money on this seeing significant play.
On the face of it 2 vs 3 cmc doesn't matter much in modern since most the Bx decks that would want to use this either can't (gurmag, bloodbraid) or already could (DS, snappy, thing in the ice, goyf etc). Does allow for clique as well I suppose. The big upgrade is that unless you were in red too claim/fame was only claim so the red aftermath was pretty irrelevant.
Where unearth is leagues better is of course cycling. This is so much better against all the graveyard hate since it can at least replace itself or if you're in need of lands or something early you can just cycle it.

This one is a lot less extreme, but it still has tons of potential.
