this one seems like a bad idea, too much potential for being broken. a mill deck won't use this, or a deck looking to grind out some value, this is one of those cards that enables a toxic combo

Project Booster Fun makes it less fun to open a booster.
Maybe dredge might want this to blank exile removal on their creatures and fill their own yard.
I like using it in my Athreos, God of Passage/Shadowborn Apostle EDH deck as a political way to knock a player out of a game (If an opponent looks like they’re about to win I can have another opponent agree to always return the apostles to my hand and edgewalker lets me recast them for free to mill out the player in the lead)
As for combo potential in modern that beats out the current combos in the format, I can’t say I can think of any off the top of my head. There are already free sac outlets in the format such as Viscera Seer and no really degenerate combo are played with that card.
I don't know how I feel about this card being in modern. It's begging to be broken.
I do have a question on wording if anyone can help. Why is this card worded this way and not "Sacrifice a creature: Target player puts the top X cards of their library into their graveyard, where X is the sacrificed creature's power."?

So Affinity Scales can mill you out instead:D Now seriously, anything that can set up a sac or counter loop can use this to deck you in one single turn, sounds dangerous.
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras. Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power. Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza. Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall. Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana. Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die. Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.

My mill deck will absolute use this. Saccing a Jace's Phantasm or super-fatty Wight of Precinct Six in response of removal or to deal the final milling to win will be fantastic.
Unless you can mill their deck in short order, I think Lantern selecting your draws is still better than Altar right? And that deck isn't exactly at the top of the meta at the moment. Altar in Modern seems brave, but not game-breaking. It might inadvertently boost some strats but we can deal with that later, etc.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
I think its hard combo potential is in a fine place: a 3 card turn 4 combo requiring multiple types of cards. Altar + Any Persister + Melira/Vizier/New Unicorn.
I think it provides an interesting soft-combo potential with self mill and easily recursive stuff like zombies, bloodghasts and the like.
No, that doesn't do anything. Altar isn't going to do anything with Trawler that Grinding station doesn't so better. And altar of dementia isn't going to do anything with enduring renewal that altar of the brood doesn't do better with walking ballista.
