Well so far this set looks like garbage for about 200 dollars a box.
Joke aside, I'm hoping they got something good to actually show in the next few days. This is not giving me a good impression considering they are charging a lot more for this.
Well its still early but yes for its supposed cost... plus the fact that it is not standard legal... its gotta have more for its supposed "modern" power level
But given that these days wotc does not show you the best card first (i think) i guess there are better stuff coming?
I'm amused that Martyr's Soul has the same caveat for getting full value out of it as Nantuko Shaman, but uses a completely different mechanic to get there.
I’m not saying Force of Negation is bad by any stretch and thank ******* god it isn’t a mythic. However, we’ve yet to see anything really powerful, stuff that would actually impact the format. I do appreciate the nostalgia stuff, but if you’re going to charge twice as much for a box, have the power level fit the bill. Unfortunately, the Serra PW is hot garbage and Cabal Therapist is really just a feelsbad Cabal Therapy when I really don’t think Cabal Therapy will break Modern.
I get it, it’s early, but I feel like there hasn’t been a single card that really wows me, and I feel like we should be getting that early on. If FoN hit creature spells, I’d be so much happier. It’s just a bit disappointing to me.
I’m more interested in the constructed viable stuff. Hopefully we get some greatness tomorrow.
So I think that some of what this set is also trying to do is preemptively put some answers to potential degenerate future shenanigans. Like Force of Negation might not have a home right now, but that's fine. The fact that it now exists and is a card that can be played will (hopefully) act as a check on other things.
Had to pick the dust bunnies off of my tongue when my jaw dropped and my tongue flopped out when I saw the full art snow lands. But this also confirms snow creatures!!!
snow lands look like ass and i'm not even sure why you're all so excited over them.
that new counterspell is nifty, pretty much confirms no force of will in this set
some of these are going to be artificially expensive due to the premium nature of this set, and thats very frustrating.
I'm going to copy and paste my remarks on the Snow Lands from the EDH section of the forums.
It's really people forget that the Snow-Covered lands have a real financial cost, and while they're cheap in comparison to things like Scalding Tarn, they're a card you're potentially running up to 15 to 30-ish, depending on the format, if you're running them. In addition, unlike things like Shadowborn Apostle they're cards that have serious competitive applications, which people also forget. I showed them to a local Magic Facebook group that they're getting reprinted, and no-one understood why I'm so excited by them being reprinted.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
so far the names are really tacky and Time Spiral-ish but about half of these cards are exciting to me as a weird deckbuilder.
this is the kind of set that I'll buy individual cards from and will never touch the foil of a booster pack

I really like Headless Specter for Pauper. It makes me want to play a Pox/Discard style Pauper deck. Anyone have any card suggestions for that kind of deck in Pauper? Wrench Mind, Duress, Ravenous Rats, etc.

Just perusing black discard at common, Tendrils of Despair is pretty cool, especially with death triggers like Black Cat's. You have a lot of good ways to enable hellbent, including Putrid Imp, Raven's Crime, Delirium Skeins, and Restless Dreams into re-using all of your ETB triggers. Liliana's Specter already sees some play, I think, and you can bring back either specter with Unearth. There isn't a good discard-based win condition in the format, so you'll have to settle for specter beatdown and Gary.
So we have a way *****tier Force of Will and a mostly better Deranged Hermit. I really hope we don’t get too many of these *****tier callbacks that are just mostly worse than the original. More Astral Drifts and Deep Forest Hermits and fewer Cabal Therapists and Force of Negations please.
This card literally does whatever you want Force of Will to do, what modern needs, and why people play FoW in legacy.
It prevents your opponents from doing completely broken stuff at turns where they normally shouldnt be doing it.
A card like this was neccessary to keep the format in check, and keep it healthy for a long period of time.
This is by far the best way they could have gone at it. And god did they still push this card, it being a negate that costs only 1 more blue, but exiles AND has a alternative free casting cost?
People like you really do not know what a format needs, nor how to properly evaluate cards.

I could say the same about you. I don't find this comes close to Force of Will. It serves one function of Force, combos that go off on your turn. That's only a portion of what real Force does.
The best thing would have been to put in FoW. It's not too powerful of a card for modern. It is just a better card. There is a reason people run 4 and then sideboard them out game 2 in a great number of instances. This will be the exact opposite because it's not as good. FoN will be a sideboard card for if the meta goes too combo. People will think it's something more, but it's not.

force of negation is super cool. I'm also debating switching my desire to collect gp promo basics from last to year collecting foil full art snow lands

It is the most relevant portion of FoW that merits it seeing 'reprint' or why people were advocating for it.
This + FoW function as a last defense. If WotC really ****s up and lets some degenerate combo get through that can reliably win too fast for modern, at least this holds it back temporarily.
It gives WotC also more design space, and maybe we can even see some cards being unbanned.
Yes, ofcourse being able to counter ANYTHING, during ANY turn is more powerfull. I never disputed that

No it would have been worse for the format. Forcing people to play 4 copies of a card maindeck in ALL decks that play that colour is not healthy for a format. I dont understand how you could possibly think it is.
If you play blue in legacy 10-12 copies of your cards would be instalocked.
4 Brainstorm, 4 FoW, 2-4 Flusterstorm. Thats not a healthy designspace to live in.
I have the feeling that you watched CFB's podcast about which card they wanted to see, and now youre just blindly echoing what they stated.
If you gave LSV the question now in retrospect, I am certain that he would choose to have this card OVER raw FoW in modern.

We got Growing Rites of Itlimoc//Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun and Storm the Vault//Vault of Catlacan, which inspired the idea to begin with. I'm not sure why Vault's second ability only taps for U if the first ability can tap for mana of any color, though.
