How do they stop people from having multiple servers being in the Cue and buying all the tickets?
They don't. And honestly, they can't. When demand outstrips supply this badly, people will always find a way to circumvent any manufacturer intentions of "fair" distribution. I don't even know what they could possibly do. Ship to your local LGS and force you to open the box in front of staff before you leave to show it's not gonna go right up on Ebay? Even then you could just go and sell the cards...

As a result, we were not able to successfully complete your order. We’ll issue your refund very shortly in your original form of payment.

Yeah I just got refunded and got the same email. I’m guessing they send everyone the buy a box promo from horizons to try and say sorry and build hype for the new set. It’s what they did with toppers for UMA after their site messed up the first mythic edition
Just want to provide the other side of the coin, an email for those who got their order in.
"Hello!
Congratulations! Yesterday, Wizards of the Coast launched the exclusive Magic: The Gathering War of the Spark Mythic Edition card set on their eBay Hasbro store. Twelve thousand booster boxes sold out almost instantly, and we’re excited (though not as excited as you!) that your order is confirmed.
We’ll begin shipping these sets soon, so keep an eye on your inbox for a shipping confirmation. In the meantime, please reach out to 866-540-3229 if you have any questions about your order."

I clicked "Buy it Now" immediately after the listing appeared and paid with a credit card, but so did many people who were unsuccessful, I wager. If it matters, the "number sold" counter was merely 999 when I went in.
Just checked and I got the same confirmation email. I submitted my payment information at approximately 3:00:47 PM EST (was running a stopwatch out of boredom) The payment took a bit longer to process than normal (roughly 20 or so seconds for confirmation screen to pop up) so all in all my order was finished around 3:01:20 PM for me.

so it seems that they didn't honor the orders that got cancelled due to ebays/hasbros mess up.
True. I got the cancellation email as well even though my first order went through immediately after the listing went live (the counter was around 100 units when I bought it).
Now I assume we'll get a lame gift card and some promo, all together valued around 75$-100$ while the Mythic Edition boxes are shooting up to the 1,000$ mark a piece.
This is a disgrace and by far the worst experience I've had with any MTG product purchase... and this comes from someone who bought all Mythic Editions & SDCC sets to date.
Unbelievable.
They basically went with the lazy way, the first 12k successfull orders gets them. The right way would have been the first 12k ordered whether it went through or cancelled. It's a lot easier to accept that you didn't get a box because you were a little too late than you're not getting it because our system crashed.
Congrats to those who got it.
For those who didn't. My money is on 3 packs of modern horizons.
75-100 of value from the voluntary compensation seems a bit optimistic to me. not to say im against it turning out that way, rather that such an expectation will likely set you up for disappointment.
the sale/event was horrible, however as i believe it was mentioned earlier in this thread, its still within the realm of other collector/limited edition sales of big name brand products online. crashes, timeouts, and stuff like seemingly random orders being reversed should have been the baseline expectation. yes there are methods out there to better facilitate this type of sale, but we knew full well ebay doesnt have them and hasbro is (and has been) so much of a dinosaur it nearly killed itself by clinging on to the archaic toys-r-us as long as it did. wizards is the same way; arena has been a hit, but it sure as hell isnt because of how well the game was designed or its feature set.
anywho the real problems was putting way too much value in the box in conjunction with too few of them. masterpiece jtms AND ugin was necessary? really? oh yeah then use RNA as a basis for the supply...wtf?

So for those of you who are actually getting their boxes:
What time did you first attempt to purchase it, and what time did your payment finish processing? I'm trying to get a general idea of when the 12,000 limit was reached.
I first tried to order at around 12:00:45 Pacific time, but my payment was pending and eventually got canceled. I then managed to "successfully" buy two at 12:23.
I wonder if my initial order was within the first 12,000 attempted, after discounting all the bots.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
Two attempts during the first 3 minutes : one during the first minute, another right after at 3:02 (since since the first was stuck at the payment) that was in "Payment processing". The first 12k were sold and then after looking at my second attempt it was canceled now (As many it seems)
Finally get to buy one at the second launch that is by now still in my order and I didn't get any email as for now, canceling or confiming it, so looks like a Schroedinger's Mythic Edition right now...
It's really sad that they just go with the "first 12k that weren't bugged get them" because it's just looks like some lottery then, people were just lucky at the payment process and those who were first there are not even sure top get one :/

I opened their listing as soon as it was listed. I "camped" Hasbroshop 1 hr earlier estimated time. I was following twitter and other social media to not miss the boat. I was expecting it to be sold in the first minute or in my worse scenario in seconds. After I finished all the proceedings, I checked the listing again and it was half way done already. The only strange occurrence for me was the site had a timeout message after I pressed the pay button. However, upon refreshing it went through normally. I got email confirmation and it was listed on my purchase listing like normal followed by bot feedback. Apparently everything went normal except for the timeout. I paid with my saved bank account from eBay. Luckily I didn't undergo Paypal or some cheap CC.
I started checking the reddit/twitter/salvation to see how the selling is going and upon second checking of the listing, it was over 12K and I found it strange. After seeing all the topics about cancelled sells from early bird buyers and the weird counter behavior, I kept checking if this happened to me. No message of cancellation received or any further abnormality.
I checked my bank account and it was charged already. Everything seems normal. On social media, pandemonium was escalating. Also, I saw the second listing and kept following till the last listing with 4K or so (dunno if it was the third listing or whatever, it was so hectic) was listed and at the same time I was keeping an eye on my side if my order was still fine, if not I would attempt to buy again. Luckily it wasn't necessary to jump on these new listings.
Still it was very stressing to keep tab on what was going on online. Finally like everyone else, got the latest congratulatory email confirming the purchase. I guess I got lucky on the get and go and for not using the more "normal" ways to pay like Paypal and CC.
I've gotten the "We were not able to complete your order" email, but I've still got a valid order on eBay?
I've also got a previous, invalid order. So I'm not sure if the "We were not able to complete your order" email is about the first or second order.
To people who have received the "We were not able to complete your order" email, does the order still show up as not being cancelled in your eBay purchase history? Or has it been cancelled?
I'm not holding out much hope that I'm going to get this thing, which... Sucks. I don't really have the emotional energy to be angry about it, but it was kind of the one Big Nice Thing I was going to get for myself for... A while. I'd been saving up for something else, but saw those card arts and decided to go with this instead. I don't exactly have much money, and probably shouldn't have been spending $500 of it on Magic cards, but I can't help feeling more hurt by this than I logically should.
I guess if I can manage to snag one from a scalper in the $400 range I might go for that. Probably can't. I just want some pretty full-art cardboard, but I guess nice things aren't for sad cripples like me. : /
EDIT: Also hi, I used to post here under a different name that I don't remember before it switched over to using Twitch to log in, so I'm not a complete random sadposting out of the blue, just mostly one.

Well... Hold on a moment. This is partly about when you tried to buy and partly about actions taken during purchase. I've been looking over this thread and the various (innumerable) Reddit threads about what exactly people did during this rush. If you waited more than 5ish seconds for your payment to process you should have canceled the whole thing and went through the process again. I have yet to see someone say they waited more than 5 minutes for payment and got a positive confirmation for that purchase.
Why?
Because your API call was hung. It seems to me that clicking "buy it now" and moving to the next window does not reserve you a box, it just moves you to the next window to process payment. If your payment hung until past when 12000 boxes were sold then you missed it. This is why you needed to cancel and redo the purchase; it makes another attempt to get a good API call through the payment system. Once your call is hung though, there's nothing to pick it up from that state, it's just dead. There's no point in waiting for it.
Source: Am confirmed on 3 boxes via 2 congrats emails, did not use a bot, and refreshed my API calls every 5ish seconds during the initial minutes of the rush.
Imagine a drive through like McDonald's with an infinite number of lanes through which you order, pay, and pick up. You pull up to the window and order (click buy it now), move to the next window to pay and spend 20 minutes paying (or however long). While you were doing that thinking you were secure to pickup your product at the next window the other infinite lanes were processing payments faster than you and some 1000 people could sneak through the whole process before you could pay. Now once you go to the window with your receipt in hand because your payment processed, it simply says they are out of stock. Processing your payment was not putting you in anyone's way, so when someone found a faster lane than yours they could cut in line ahead of you. If your payment window was slow, it was beneficial to leave that window entirely to find a faster window even though this required driving around the whole process again.
This is not like an ordinary store where you go to pay with your product secured in your hands. Despite there being a "cart" it does not act like an actual cart.
Edit: as for the actual time 12000 was reached, I saw it stop at 11,995 sold at 5 minutes after open. It stayed that way for some 10 minutes then a bunch of chaos happened and I stopped tracking it.
So as I mentioned earlier, got in and completed purchase at 12:04 PDT but My Ebay Summary said payment pending, then it was cancelled. Got one at 12:22 PDT using credit card and another one 12:34 PDT using Paypal. Got emails last night, my 12:22 PDT is confirmed, and the 12:34 PDT order has been cancelled. Not sure if my cancelled 12:04 PDT order has anything to do with it or the fact I "contacted seller" as soon as it was cancelled and asked them if my order was good. But I consider my self extremely lucky to have gotten a confirmation email.
My order still shows active on Ebay and I got a confirmation email from Ebay right after I paid.
I've gotten nothing since them. Checked Spam as well and nothing.
Money hasn't been refunded so I'll just hope all is good.
