Huatli, Sun's Heart2(G/W)
Legendary Planeswalker - Huatli (U)
Each creature you control assigns combat damage equal to its toughness rather than its power
-3: You gain life equal to the greatest toughness among creatures you control.
{7}
Between Arcades, Huatli and High Alert, could there be a midrange toughness based deck in Standard? Probably not, right? Not enough advantage attached to the enablers.
Why is the activated ability so bad though ? It should've targeted one of our creatures, let it attack as though it didn't have defender, and gain us life equal to its toughness.
As is it's worse than Assault Formation and High Alert. You can't dig for it with Commune with the Gods either.

Making it target makes it able to fizzle because of removal. As it's worded here, it'll failover to the next tougher creature - if the opponent responds to this activation by killing your toughest you still get the second-toughest in lifegain.
You don't run this in a deck of creatures with defender that you need to override. Flavorfully that's not what Huatli's about anyway. This is to make the likes of Looming Altisaur wham harder. Huatli isn't making walls walk here.
I like the high loyalty / low cost setup on her. Its a cool addition even if the effect doesn't take off huge I like seeing this kind of thing rather than chaff nothing cards that nobody wants anywhere.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Unfortunately this won't make it into my Arcades wall tribal deck as it doesn't allow my walls to attack.
Arcades allows your Walls to attack anyway, so what's the problem?

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Then cast Assault Formation? High Alert? Even Warmonger's Chariot? You can also cheat your Commander back with Command Beacon. Honestly, if your commander dies several times in the course of one game, you should probably invest in better protection for your commander. Also consider storage lands that will, sooner or later, allow you to recast your commander no matter how many times they die.
Of course, you probably already have these cards in your deck. In which case, I guess I see why you wouldn't bother with Huatli since you already have some better options for the whole "combat damage equal to toughness" effect.
Anyway, yeah, she's built more for bottom-heavy beaters.

It could happen. Particularly in Arena Standard where aggro decks are 50% of the meta this could be good. That this doesn't let walls attack is sorta iffy, but the gain life can be huge.
On the other, I’m a huge fan of all these buildarounds in honest-to-god hybrid slots. Very cool design, especially if there are commons to bridge the different combinations.
I made Assault Formation work in standard, I can make this work! I kept lamenting that I really wanted green in my High Alert deck, and here it damn well is!

What? If you have arcades in play, huatli is just redundant.
I don't get the interest in running this in arcades. If you're playing arcades and he keeps dying, play more ways to protect him, recur him, etc. Don't play worse versions of his effect that do nothing while he's alive. That's just planning to fail.
Not only does this not let defenders attack, it also doesn't draw cards, AND it requires defending. It makes no sense in arcades. Maybe it could have a place in something like sidar kondo of jamuraa though.
I mean, I guess this makes your Wildgrowth Walkers hit for a truckload, but that deck doesn't really need that ability. Arcades dekcs in Standard might become more than fringe playable, I guess?

I like at least that it shares a theme with some dinosaurs like the aforementioned Brontodon as well as Verdant Sun's Avatar, Zetalpa, Primal Dawn and Looming Altisaur.

Its a pointless drawback, as its already a stretch to make this good.
