anyone know about the lore behind this dog. Is he a survivor from Rhonas bestiary?
Long story short, he's Jiang Yanggu's companion. Although he's a dog, he's sapient and has some will of his own and is able to follow Yanggu whenever he planeswalks.

And no we have no clue exactly how this works. The Plane of Mountains and Seas apparently has a race of supranormal dogs of some kind so he's just a natural animal with a special connection to Yanggu and his spark, we think.

Yeah, that's the annoying part. I'm tempted to bombard Doug with emails about this until we get an answer that's more than just "Yanggu can take his dog with him because cute doggo."

thanks for the explanations. So it is unknown whether it is the power of planeswalker that takes the dog along.. or the dog itself has the ability to planeswalk?
touche
I do get a little spiky at times when evaluating role players but i can honestly say i don't have any top tier competitive decks and all are fun to play
I guess Atraxa +1/+1 is powerful, but the fairest version of the deck by a mile.
Hehe yeah, I like playing commander when everybody's using fair decks. I just like relaxing and having fun with it and nobody gets completely annihilated if they play a "normal" deck if you know what I mean hehe.
thanks for the explanations. So it is unknown whether it is the power of planeswalker that takes the dog along.. or the dog itself has the ability to planeswalk?
Well the dog's not a planeswalker. Mowu might be intelligent but isn't a second planeswalker who backs up Yanggu, otherwise Yanggu would be a serious force to be reckoned with instead of a mage of considerable power in general but not very strong among his planeswalker peers.
Pretty sure Mowu can't "independently" planar travel, either, because if he can do that AND is not a planeswalker, that makes him somethingelseentirely, which just begs far, far, far more questions than it answers.

The only thing that would make this pupper better is if he literally fetched creatures and/or lands for you.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Pretty sure Mowu can't "independently" planar travel, either, because if he can do that AND is not a planeswalker, that makes him somethingelseentirely, which just begs far, far, far more questions than it answers.
I think this is just one of those times where we have to shrug and accept that planeswalkers are superheroes now, and can have their own unique superpowers that others don't have. The kid gets to take his dog with him when traveling through another dimension and Jace does not, but Jace gets to read people's minds and the kid does not, and Gideon gets to be Superman indestructible when no one else is, etc. I'd call it a wash.
Though if it really bugs you, IIRC when Venser was still around they implied he could maybe teleport non-planeswalker companions to other planes-- or at least, he was working on figuring out how, which was what made Koth see him as so dangerous he forced Venser to abandon his research on Dominaria to fight on Mirrodin. So, yeah, there is some precedent for it.
This will be my commander. Anyone who does not say "Hi doggie" like they just woke up whenever I cast this commander will be the one taking a lot of commander damage.

Venser was reconstructing a Phyrexian interplanar ship... which we actually aren't certain COULD still planeswalk, given that planar portals don't work anymore (at least, not for organic matter), nor can the rebuilt Weatherlight plane shift (yet?).
