the mono black is a bit surprising. also i agree that card does very little to capture the flavor of the character, which is unfortunate given im a big fan of brandon sanderson
i was low key hoping he would be (or become) a prominent figure in liliana's story line in addition to more insight into the 'entities' (souls of planes?) that inhabits him and the woman that came up in his short story. quite the inauspicious start if that is going to be the case.
Shadowmage? He wasn't a shadowmage in the book at all. The closest thing to these black shadows was some ink spell he stole from the mind of a church scribe and used to create a menacing looking runes (actually a recipe of a bread written on Ulgrothian) and it was hilarious.
Well, we still don't know how he uses the power of Entity and at least discarding ability partially fits his talents.
Still disappointed by his first appearance in the game though and though.
Also why not just Davriel Cane and Teyo Verada as well?
I would much rather have the new people (Teyo, Davriel, Wanderer, and new person) be the Rares or Mythics. I mean The gatewatch is pretty "common" since they seem to show up everywhere

Also why not just Davriel Cane and Teyo Verada as well?
Two reasons I can think of: One, this will be the introduction to these characters for many players, so letting them know what their power suite is is very helpful for establishing those characters for future appearances. Secondly, if they do want to do "First name Last Name" versions of these characters, they'd likely want to save those iconic names for good cards.
I don't know anything about the lore but the card itself is pretty good. I was just hoping for something more bada** from what looks to be the love child of Darth Vader and Skeletor.
Back? All right, the question that arises here is pretty obvious: How in the multiverse did Davriel let himself get caught up in the mess happening on Ravnica. Well, the events of the story I wrote kind of blew his cover—and, just as feared—soon after, he got several visits from extra-planar entities looking for planeswalkers to recruit for their cause. He also got a very cryptic message that I’ll, perhaps, get into some time in the future.
Suffice it to say that in the end, he decided to show up and do his best to encourage everyone that he was useless. He figured that way, next time everyone decided to go murder one another, they’d neglect to invite him. Unfortunately, he arrived, and everything has basically gone to hell. (And, having been there before, he’s not a fan.)
We can therefore summarize Davriel’s opinion on events with the following list:
1) OH BOTHER.
2) Zombies. Why is it always zombies? Aren’t there any evil, power-hungry overlords out there with good taste in minions?
3) He wonders what the Ravnican insurance policies look like. It would be curious to have a look at the fine print, and see how likely the local actuaries rated “Extra-planar invasion by megalomaniacal dragons.”
4) Said megalomaniacal dragon really needs to be more careful with his rampaging, as he quite nearly destroyed Davriel’s favorite local noodle shop with his latest destructive tirade.
5) Did anyone get the name of that Demon in the loin cloth? You know, the fellow with the glowing face and a mouth that looks like it can toast its own bread while consuming it? Because Davriel currently has a hole in his staff and is offering very competitive rates on his soul.
Now, if you’ll excuse him, he’s going to go see if Cruel Celebrant’s party has any snacks not infused with the blood of the innocent. (It really tastes far worse than everyone claims, and he’s convinced they just like to look trendy by consuming it.)

So he's trying to convince everyone that he's useless. Hm...
a lot of people going on about lore, but eh, that's a whole lot of lore could easily be disregarded as non-canon, I mean, 'Voluptara wears a fitted grey jacket over a simple knee-length skirt, and her black hair in a bun. She has an ashen grey skin and dark red eyes, with small horns peeking up through her hair.' Naw
But as an uncommon, oh my that's a sick amount of card advantage possible from a 3-drop. You're going to be able to rack people in a draft with a single card. He doesn't have to jump through many hoops to be as good as a blightning, and being able to punish someone whether they are emptyhanded or just nuke a card they decide to keep, seems nice even if he's often going to get overrun. But with all the token generators at low rarities, I'm suspecting there will be a lot of stalled boards.

if u wanna complain, do it about his rarety level, not the card itself, cause again, for an uncommon it is a solid card

Soo they can use the full name on a good walker card?
