I liked some elements of both City of Heroes and a Champions Online. Star Trek Online was very disappointing to me, though I only played it early. But the era of the MMO is past imo. No one ever tries much of anything innovative and user numbers are low. Free to play is also a bad sign. I’d honestly rather have a subscription to a good mmo than be microtransactioned.
I usually like Cryptic MMOs. I would think that the characters would of course be planeswalker. They make the most sense as player characters, and planeswalker can change planes, so I would say that this will be an important part of the game.

I mean Ravnica is good cause you gotta pick a faction. Granted it has to many factions maybe for proper MMO Balance. But those factions are consistent for 10,000 Years.
Dominaria and Innistrad are also options.
The problem is MTG has Classes sure but they are not well defined. So I wonder how much they from D & D.
Could be interesting. Wonder if it uses a hub system to represent different planes. If I had to guess what type of gameplay, the more action-oriented type that has been a growing trend the past seven years.
Given City of Heroes, I can see us players each has a combination of abilities derived from multiple “sets” or colors in MtG term, as our core abilities. Players who invest in extra white are likely better tanks, for example. Each color should have pet class abilities similar to that of a Mastermind in CoH.
I say this because I love CoH and this MtG mmo might bring back familiar elememts I so craved!
I wonder how many Colors you could master. Beyond 3 is Rare after all in Magic.
I wonder if its breadth versus depth ie only enough skill points or whatever to go deep into two but you can trade focus for versatility by dipping into other colors.
Could Tie Classes to Color Pairs I suppose...Racial Bonuses. I mean Humans, Elves, Leonin, Vampires, Kor, Merfolk?

Possible. There is a + and - to each side.
Depth of skills usually has it so you can have your character learn every skill but your skillbar is limited in what can actually be 'equipped', possibly not always passives you can 'equip'. The downside with with this functionality is that its very much not alt-friendly and tends to be a very time consuming process. This system also tends to lack classes which is neither a +/- feature.
The next method is similar to the previous, but the skill points are finite and that is how the player makes their 'class'. Upside is it tends to be a quicker affair for leveling and learning. The downside is this can lead to a 'cream of the crop' situation in which players figure out that despite the vast variety of skills they could make for a custom 'class', this leads to only a few builds being truly viable.
Next ones are basically the prior two, but the player has a set amount of amount of abilities they could learn and is presented to the player as a 'class'.
From there it starts getting more regimented with how classes how are designed and what powers they can actually have.
Could Tie Classes to Color Pairs I suppose...Racial Bonuses. I mean Humans, Elves, Leonin, Vampires, Kor, Merfolk?
Racials are a possibility for what they offer. But it also depends on how many races can be offered which is directly linked to development skill + development time + funding. If I had to estimate, about 8 races at most.

It’s also possible that if you go three colors you’ll also get a main color (being your core) while the other two are weaker be comparison.
While I was a huge fan of City of Heroes and played it basically from release to shut down, nothing else Cryptic has ever done has impressed me, and in fact the blatant money-grabbing nature of all of their other games (whether the studio's fault, or the distributors or who-evers) has seriously damaged the company's reputation for me. The the point where reading that it was being done by Cryptic essentially killed any budding excitement I might have had for the project.
I'm willing to give Cryptic another chance on this one. Wizards has a vested interest in not being too greedy since the MMO will fuel card sales.
There's so much potential for an amazing MMO experience in the MTG IP. I'm delighted at the thought of running around casting the spells from the cards in an actual MMO, at visiting the planes in person. They could do some really interesting things with an open-ended class design that ties into the color pie. I hope they can pull it off!
They are. Champions Online has been in maintenance mode for ages, basically, and City of Heroes was super sweet but got shut down, sadly.
I think their Star Trek game is pretty ok, but man, passing hard here. Not looking forward to lootboxes and keys on every street corner.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.
i'd much rather see something like a bioware style single player rpg, or a recreating of the old microprose game. no need for a bad company to make an mmo out of a game that's already multiplayer

Now, to be fair, Cryptic had long since sold off their stake in CoH before it got canned. That was entirely NCSoft's doing.

I'll still keep an eye out for the game, it could prove decent. But Cyptic certainly doesn't inspire my confidence. This really seems to be Cryptic's standard MO. Acquire rights to develop game for popular, established IP. Half-ass it and turn in a game designed entirely on farming the wallets of your consumer base, then let it crash and burn.
Here, take my money, my soul and my first born... I can already see my social life wither away... But in all seriousness, I have been waiting for something like this for a lllooonnnggg time. Imagine saying, "Avoid the forest at ALL costs... there's an Atogatog wandering..."
Honestly i'm skeptycal. It think it will feel very neutered.
To really give us choice it need:
multiple classes: a system of the usual 3 classes (warrior, mage, thief/ranger) can work, but they need give us the right specializations (for example in magic warriors, soldier and knights are all very different).
multiple races: human, elf, goblin, aven, vedalken, vampire, aetherborn... they are really a lot!
multiple planes: not only you have many races, but a human from Theros should be different than a human from Mirrodin for example.
Looks really ambitious, honestly i would feel really disappointed ending up with 5 classes and 5 bland races all from the same plane...

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
I would think that the classic race/class model will be applied here.
The Characteristic Races: Human (W) Merfolk (U) Vampire (B) Goblin (R) Elf (G)
There are enough planes where merfolk have legs and the Zendikar Vampires are not undead and should be able to hold a spark.
From a class perspective I would assume: Soldier (WR), Wizard (RUB), Cleric (WB), Druid (G), Shaman (GR), Rogue (RBU)
Or something along the line

What I would love to see is you pick your class which determines your basic combat style, then each class has five talent trees to put points into, each based on a color of mana with cross color combos being unlocked by having a certain amount of points in each of the required colors. This way they could do a relatively low amount of base classes and let the real customization come from what colors you focus on.
For instance, a Wizard who focuses in white mana would become a strong healer but if they put some points into black maybe they would gain access to some lifedrain abilities and heal partially through dps. A soldier that focuses on white mana might gain abilities that bolster and protect his allies but by moving into blue he might also gain some advantages in keeping the enemies off guard with battlefield control and evasive abilities.
There could be an artifact talent tree that all classes share that brings some utility to whatever class you want to play.

Humans Don't Count. I slot in Kor for Humans. Humans can be typical DnD Jack of All Trades. I do actually wonder how much influence DnD will exert especially on Racial Abilities and Feats.
I actually expect Soldier to be the base class then have Samurai, Warrior, Berserker and Knight spin off from that.
I agree. Humans are unfortunately the characteristic race for white. Just like Dragons are the iconic red race. Both could be done by Kor and Phoenixes which have a more focused color identity.

I like this as a concept. I definitely think Ravnica would be the likely starting plane (since in the article it says players will be Planeswalkers) as it is one of the more popular planes and would enable easy introduction into two color magic. If we start on Ravnica, I can see players starting out as Guildless, starting out in one color. At a certain level (say level 5 or so) they have the option to branch into a second color, and in doing so this causes the guild associated with that color pair to become interested in the player. Doing this would allow the game to utilize the ideas in "Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica"
That said, I do like RomanDark's idea for fleshing out your particular magic as well, which would allow for more customization (but could be more of a headache to balance/program).

I know I am just saying Humans are default so linking them to any one Color in RPG is just silly. World of Warcraft Started with 8 Races, so I think 6 is a good start.
I think Ravnica is a good starting plane as well. It has pre built Factions for Quest Giving and earning Reputation in. Whereas Innistrad is more locked by Race. And Dominaria doesn't have consistent factions over a long time.

I wonder, will us play as PWs or will us once again *cough* be stuck on Ravnica? Not that it’s a bad plane, but I prefer traveling multiverse.
