This caught me off-guard, but in retrospect makes so much sense - after all the supply of those reprints won't be any worse than the supply of new cards anyway - and once you go circumventing Standard why not go all the way? Makes also for a pretty neat restriction/justification to go hard for both nostalgia and turning Modern into "Legacy Remastered".
And they are mining a limited amount of cards there, so this is not something that is indefinitely repeatable, which is one of the issues with product series that have grossly diminishing returns.
I like being surprised in such a fashion.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
Someone above said True Name was confirmed, was that sarcasm? If not, where is that info?
They only confirmed Serra the rest of the stream they talked about at the end about what "could" be included given they said true name nemesis. I would posit they will include commander / conspiracy style reprints here
I don't get why they don't do reprints of allready modern legal cards. This is the perfect place for fetches and bobs etc.
As someone else already mentioned, the reasons are reprint equity and EV. Officially, WotC's stance is that they do not recognize the secondary market, but I'm sure that they think that if they reprint too many good cards at once at Standard print levels, they will have trouble selling future sets. They keep doing this with all non-standard sets. They have not released a set where every single rare is not considered a junk rare. Ultimate Masters came the closest so far, but they priced the boosters very high.
Somebody at WotC simply doesn't want to try to emulate the business models of Pokemon or YuGiOh, where reprints are plentiful.
'254 cards, Buy a box Promo that is new to Modern but is an existing card.'
If it's force of will I will lose my *****!
That being said there's so many cards I'd love to see in modern
Swords to plowshares, counterspell, force of will, daze, wasteland, baleful strix, containment priest, fact or fiction, pyroblast, hydroblast, wild growth, rishadan port, diabolic edict, council's judgement, accumulated knowledge, flusterstorm, back to basics, fiery confluence, toxic deluge, sylvan library, crop rotation, karakas, sneak attack.
That's just a quick think but I'm pretty much down to have all of legacy, commander and conspiracy cards in modern minus reserved list cards and obviously OP cards like ancient tomb, dark ritual, reanimate and so on.
"No old reprints" is a bit of a double-edged sword here.
On the one hand, the claim could be used to justify Masters 25 levels of "who-asked-for-this" chaff.
On the other hand, keeping "known actors" out of the equation forces wizards to take more risks, increasing the chances that one or two "safe" cards crack the format open like a piñata... which is a good thing?
What exactly are we hoping for with these reprints, again?
If Serra is in the set, then the character on the left on the wall from the stream could be Yawgmoth.
Overhyping in 3, 2...
He better not be a Planeswalker.
He'd be a black Artifact Creature - God with indestructible. Nothing else fits the Father of Machines, the Lord of the Wastes, the Ineffable.
As for what I would like to see, Thran Quarry. I know it isn't something big or flashy, but it is *not* on the reserved list, wouldn't break modern, and has *NEVER* been reprinted.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
So the mothersite says $6.99 a pack for Magic Online packs. Should we assume this to be the same price (approx.) for physical packs as well???
I'm also looking forward to the trickle down effect for Pauper. New Modern commons that may have an impact in Pauper. Sounds interesting.
Keeps fingers crossed for MOAR ELDRAZI!!!

Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.
Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
So, WPN just sent out their e-mail, announcing this set. Not a whole heck of a lot to add, other than the booster boxes will be 36 count, which makes it even more different than a Masters set. Might even keep the price around $3.99?
Therapy on a stick? Sure have fun with that and bloodghast absolutely shredding hands post t2 for eternity.
Dunno what I wanted but this is more powerful than I imagined. Serra seems slow, maybe a BW tokens build could use her. Punch through for damage as an anthem, drop a blocker in front of her, or set up a worship.
Serra seems bonkers in spirits at first blush. It does so much for the tribe out of the gate.
Therapy on a stick also seems legit scary with lingering souls/rally the ancestors.
I'm sure there will be enough powerful cards new to Modern in this set that it will be Christmas in May-June for me.
With that being said, let's be realistic: I expect at least a third of this set to be full of chaff (quite possibly functional reprints of Modern-legal cards or French vanillas with new P/T combinations).
So, let's bet on the chaff contents. Will a fifth of the chaff have Cycling for cheap, therefore boosting Living End decks? Or might we get another common with Phyrexian mana in its mana cost? Or might we get an otherwise useless card with opponents gaining life as an alternate cost?
If Serra is in the set, then the character on the left on the wall from the stream could be Yawgmoth.
Overhyping in 3, 2...
The guy on the left looks like a dude stuck in a walking tree holding some fire. I don't know a lot about Yawgmoth, but I'm pretty sure he didn't have much of an affinity for elemental stuff.
You can have a 3.99 price point, or you can have reprints of expensive modern staples. You're not getting both, forget that.
Why? We’ve had supplemental sets like both Conspiracies and Battlebond that have done just that. The Selesnya guild-kits had a wanted card worth the price of the box. WotC makes none of the extra money hoarders charge for holding old product, so why support them?
None of those products had the same level of reprints for Modern as any of the modern masters sets.
I guarantee if they put a Tarmagoft in the Selesnya guild kit it wouldn't sell for MSRP.
Maybe at walmart where you can still get 3 packs of UMA for 32 bucks...

Well you can only active the ability at the beginning of your 1st main phase which means it wouldn't be possible to play a creature in time on turn 2 for the Therapist. Also only activates once a turn but it does mean you're thoughtseizing every turn from t3 which is obviously busted
I'm 75% excited because this set drops on my birthday, so if there is some good things in here, then I'll be 100% excited and getting my birthday present. I like Serra as a flier support card, but other then that, is she really going to shape modern? Doubtful. I can't even gauge her power for modern. UW spirits? Eh. Also not sure on the powerlevel of the other card spoiled.
Overhyping in 3, 2...
Maybe not Yawgmoth, but it definatly feels Phyrexian.
Maybe Croag or Kerrick?

And hope they remake some characters.
