I actually hope this set would be moderately-powered at best, mainly because it's the first of its line (assuming this becomes a yearly product) and without MSRP (MTGO pricing not withstanding at the moment), how much the paper secondary market drives this will determine the series' fate in the mid-run. If by some miracle we manage to keeps our heads in the cool and let this actually successfully run at Standard MSRP prices, we might have truly "saved" Modern in the long run.
Yes, we can say that it's just re-branded Modern Masters (despite having a completely different print pool for this run), but the fact it got "rebranded" is a very powerful opportunity in by itself. The "all-new-to-Modern-cards" might be a gimmick for the first set (or two, maybe), I don't think they're establishing it as the constant feature for the product line, so there's potential for actual reprints already legal in the format in future Horizon sets. If we successfully maintain an image of Standard booster prices for Horizon sets, the same way we do for Conspiracy/Battlebond, the day we get fetches/other desirable cards reprinted in regular-priced boosters without having to pass by Standard (which in turn means WotC is more willing to re-consider and reprint them year after year) might even become a reality.
The fact that even the market was tired of all the tricks Masters was pulling by UMA (to the point we're basically going below MSRP) does give a little bit of confidence we might behave ourselves to set the precedent for this product line to be the "reasonably priced Modern boosters" product we've always wanted. Now all that's really left on WotC's hand is the print run guarantee... I really hope it's eating the Conspiracy/Battlebond slots because those print runs are pretty much the generous ones of the supplementary product list.
So the mothersite says $6.99 a pack for Magic Online packs. Should we assume this to be the same price (approx.) for physical packs as well???
I'm also looking forward to the trickle down effect for Pauper. New Modern commons that may have an impact in Pauper. Sounds interesting.
If it's not $3.99 a pack, it's just Modern Masters with a different name. Yay.
Pretty much. I like that it's 36/box even if it's 6.99/pack that's 252 which is right in line of what all the other Master sets (except Ultimate) were roughly priced at. Also, no auto include for foils but I assume foils are randomly inserted still.
There are 5426 cards legal in legacy but not modern that meet their basic reprint criteria. Could this be the set Oubliette gets its teased reprint? Maybe by avoiding standard they can provide better answers to some powerful decks. I do feel the Mirage fetches are likely to be printed as an uncommon cycle or maybe some other obscure land cycle to help color fixing. 3 months to build wish lists.
They'll almost certainly continue the new cards indefinitely. That's how you can sustainably print those high value reprints a few at a time. There's only so many reprints, but now that they have the ability to make new modern powered cards, they can continuously churn out the sets at a lower msrp and not give a damn as much about reprint equity. After all, even if there were zero modern cards over $30, they can print NEW staples you can only get in this new pack. Its really genius. Rosewater deserves a medal for figuring out how to make modern and maybe even legacy sustainable without having a huge sales spike and crash like just reprinting all the old cards for cheap would do. Sure, he might have made a few mistakes in the past, but it looks like he came through in the pinch. It is even an avenue to print cards for old characters that are dead or we might not be visiting their plane anytime soon. Hell, O-Kagachi could even get a card worthy of vorthos. You could even do all the 9 titans, urza, yawgmoth, razia, or anyone.
I think Sorin is still better because of lifelink. Serra is still fine, in both modes: 4 mana 4/4 flyer turn 4 as a blocker which becomes a 5/5 Vigilant Flyer when attacking, or 4 mana for a Worship Emblem that essentially has suspend 1. Backed up with Path and [card=Fatal Push]Push[card], I still think it could see some play in modern.
Maro just dropped the most significant(price wise) information.
affinityformisplays asked: Will Modern Horizons be a limited print run or printed for as long as demand holds?
It is not a limited print run.
If this means what it should mean, that they will continue printing this for up to a year as long as it keeps being ordered. Then this will completely crash the prices of anything significant, which also means there might not be many high profile reprints.
Aw yes, the Serra Angel token! Is it safe to say creating 4/4 Angel tokens with flying and vigilance will be Serra's thing much as turning into a creature is Gideon's thing or turning artifacts into 5/5 creatures is Tezzeret's thing? I'm already picturing a second Serra card with an ultimate that creates an army of Angel tokens, perhaps tied to the number of Plains you control.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I'm surprised that no one has really mentioned that this has the potential to bring about a permanent sea change in the Modern metagame. The format could become unrecognizable overnight. That's not to say that it will be bad necessarily, but there is a chance it could break Modern in half. In one year, I wonder how many cards from this set will be on the ban list...

Can you name all of the creature types with at least 20 cards? Try my Sporcle Quiz! Last Updated: 6/29/20 (Core Set 2021).
FINALLY! Been hoping that WotC make that move of creating a product that skips standard to fuel modern reprints. Although they only satisfy half my hope since the reprints won't be current modern-legal cards, but cards that will be introduced to the format (which in itself is a good news IMHO).
Now, let's hope that they'll make Modern Horizon 2 in 2 years (or next years !!!) with only new cards and reprints from actual modern-legal cards and we got a staple summer product that will get my money.

"De potentia juvenis somniabat, nunc de Mundo somniat..."
Don't think so, the lifelink from Sorin is very important to turn the game, but Serra might be the second best above Gideon, AoZ. The token is more relevant and the +2 has good synergy with the deck.
If Serra is in the set, then the character on the left on the wall from the stream could be Yawgmoth.
Overhyping in 3, 2...
He better not be a Planeswalker.
He'd be a black Artifact Creature - God with indestructible. Nothing else fits the Father of Machines, the Lord of the Wastes, the Ineffable.
As for what I would like to see, Thran Quarry. I know it isn't something big or flashy, but it is *not* on the reserved list, wouldn't break modern, and has *NEVER* been reprinted.
I think Yawgmoth would end up on Esper. He started as a heavily Science Based Doctor who allegedly infected people just to create a cure and used that to gain personal and political power, Alternatively a White/Blue Creature card that flips into a Mono-Black God.
I take both Shardless Agent and (even more) Baleful Strix as a given for this set. These are the first two reprints that come to my mind, along with monocolor cycling lands.
As for the two spoiled cards, both are good but decently powered for Modern I guess. Can't wait for June!

I mean Serra is known for Angels and Enchantments. And Enchantment focus doesn't really work in Modern or the Formats beyond cause Enchantments tend to be underpowered.
I think Yawgmoth is Pure Black. Now could he be other colors sure, but I figure his first card will certainly be monoblack. An Esper card could happen latter. I wonder if all the Nine Titans get a card eventually.
Yay! Finally a Serra and she isn't bad!
Art made by one of my favourite recent artists and has iconic abilities (makes a Serra Angel token and gives a Worship emblem).
She already has a spot in my collection. Too bad she is missing the "can be your commander" line, tho.
Now I'wondering which art they will use for the angel token.
If i had to take a guess, the image on the left side of the stream could be the phyrexianised mishra after he fused with some of the machines around him

I'm predicting that Strix will get in, too. Given that Modern seems to be going in a less battlecruiser direction and has loads of answers to it (e.g. Walking Ballista for colourless and green decks), it seems reasonable.
But I don't think Shardless Agent will get in. There was too much controversy surrounding Bloodbraid Elf's power level, and there was even a stage soon after its unbanning where BBE looked like it would funnel half or more of the fair decks to include it (at least from my mass-analyzing tournament results of the time). Adding an even cheaper Cascade dude would be too much for Wizards to dare/bear, IMO.

I think everyone took it as a given that clearly adding cards that are currently only in legacy or are new specially for modern would lead to huge changes in the look of modern but after so many years it will be amazing to see the news decks. Standard sets rarely have more than a handful of cards that make it in modern and most end up as 1 ofs or sideboard cards or tier 2/3 cards. A set with 254 cards and none are reprints of current modern sets means a potential 254 cards that can see play. Realistically there will be plenty of filler but you've got to imagine we're talking 50+ potential new to modern cards that directly affect decks or make new top tier decks.
meh... i dont like the idea of a modern set that skips standard. i got the feeling that standard increased in popularity in the last months (at least here at my LGS) and i am worried that people dodge standard again when these modern sets come out.
i dont like modern anymore, to many decks where u have no interaction with your opponent, so for me the format became super boring.
and when i look at the power level of the spoiled cards i doubt this set will make the format more fun. ok serra kind of sucks for modern, not sure what they were thinking. uncreative, powerless. just looks like "oh they wanted serra for commander sets"..."lets print any random white planeswalker with angel theme and put in a set where it doesnt belong"
but the therapist seems good, having a continious discard looks playable
