My Marchesa, The Black Rose deck has 27 cards that make me lose life, many of them repeatable effects like City of Brass.
I think this card would easily kill 3-4 creatures per game if I drew it in the first 3 turns.
This thread is full of idiots... Lightning Bolt is NOT being reprinted.
Many times has a writer in Wizards said so, because of the plain and simple fact that it's too powerful for what it costs. x/3 creatures shouldn't be able to die at instant speed for one mana without a signifigant drawback. (like PTE giving you a land)
I absolutely guarantee that LB will not be printed in M10, and you can quote me on that.

I am interested in that list, but city of brass, like the shock lands does damage to you, which is not you paying life, and would not trigger this effect. The fetch lands and mana confluence would work though.

wonder if this can be used by grixis death shadow decks or is it to slow?
I am going to test out some in the sideboard for creature matchups to see how it does. Some of GDS' worst matchups are tribal decks and this card could be a potential 2-for-1 or in rare cases a 3-for-1. At the same time, I'm not still sure that it would just be better than Bolt-Snap-Bolt for most situations. Anyway, I think it warrants testing so we will see!
I'm really not a huge fan of the card names in this set so far. I know the more obscure meanings behind the word, "font," but how many people are going to look at this and wonder what this card has to do with Windows FONTS?
If you want to get any value from this you need to destroy 2+ creatures with its engine. Otherwise you might as well slot in any 2-3 cmc black removal spell like murder or cast down for better effect. The only output on this card is destroying creatures. And if its 2B to destroy 1 creature only after you've paid 4 life somehow, that's terrible. But if you're destroying 2+ creatures, that means you're both paying 8+ life in a game and facing a creature matchup where you need to destroy enemy threats- where paying 8 life is suicidal.
I agree with your evaluation, but want to point out that this card could be played against control (e.g. wincons like Niv-mizzet), where Font of Agonies slips past counterspells and where the life loss is less important.
EXACTLY. For 1CMC, even if you get this countered, it's going to cost your opponent at least one counter spell and the possibility of tapping out. If they let it slip through, I'm sure there's a few cards that'll let me pay life to fuel this.
Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
This doesn't seem playable outside of EDH. 1/5 of your life per creature is rough, and on top of that it has to be cast before you lose the life or it is a do nothing enchantment. Cool card, but count me out.

Except that you're not paying the life to get the counters, you're paying life to shock, recur Blood Operative, surveil with Doom Whisperer, or, perhaps, in older formats, fetch or Thoughtseize. The counters are a bonus. I'm not sure if it will be good, but it's worth a look.

Thoughtseize is a no-go. This specifically triggers from life payment, and Seize's life loss is not the payment of a cost.
Also, I don't get the confusion over the use of the word "font" expressed by others in this thread. Wizards has already used the word on Font of Mythos and an entire cycle in Journey into Nyx.

It's the same kind of confusion I constantly see about the word "save" being used like it's the word "except". Despite being a completely legitimate definition, people still ask.
(Something amusing: to a certain extent, this word redefining also works in French. I once read a novel translated from French where one of its prophecies revolved around that definition.)

Pretty sure Thoughtseize doesn't work with this. Life loss doesn't mean life payment. Fetchlands definitely don't.
The effect of killing a creature is not one you'd happily trade life for very many times, unless your deck has a significant amount of lifegain. Also, these don't stack well, so putting multiples in a deck risks you losing the card advantage you sought to gain. It may see play in a black control deck as a 1-of alongside Arguel's Blood Fast but other than that there's little reason to think this is going anywhere competitive. In EDH, though, there are a handful of commanders that will turn this on as a matter of course, and the extra life will make this pretty decent at killing things. Probably better than most single-target removal at that point.

Why wouldn't fetch lands work with this? They say: T, Pay 1 life. You are literally paying life.

But, I don't think it is better than Fleshbag Marauder, Plaguecrafter and Ravenous Chupacabra.
Like... maybe I could cut Dictate of Erebos?
This is a tough call!
Fun card though.

Paying 4 life for a counter might be a bit much, mi amigo. I mean, if you're gaining life too, it's fine.
In EDH, however, it's great; you literally just need Baneslayer Angel and Necropotence or Erebos, God of the Dead or Phyrexian Reclamation to get a lot of use out of it.
On phasing:
That would be paying 4 life for 4 counters--the phrase is "that many".
